Stephenie Meyer has proved with both Twilight and The Host that she cannot write a decent main character. In Twilight, Bella has no personality, and you as the reader are encouraged to project your own personality onto her. This is my main problem with the movies, as Kirsten Stewart does not allow this to happen. My problem with The Host is that Meyer’s idea of a ‘perfect’ girl is stereotypically small, submissive and undeniably aryan. This irritated me to no end, as I grew up reading Tamora Pierce, whose main characters are diverse and varied throughout the many books she has written. Her main characters have included a redheaded tomboy, a girl who fell in love with a much older man, an asexual girl intent on following her dreams, a lesbian, a gay crossdresser and so many other ‘minorities’. The fact that she makes all of this seem normal and makes the reader subconsciously take it all in their stride and accept the character’s decisions, shows her strength as an author. Something that Ms Meyer does not possess.
