Ugly doesn’t apply only to outside looks, same goes for pretty, they apply on the inside. For instance, though we may not know if you are ugly on the outside, it seems fairly obvious to state that you are ugly on the inside. To be beautiful on the inside means that you care, and you have a nice soul, which you don’t. Oh, and just to critique your grammar and spelling further-more:

This is a commenting area on the internet.. I did not acctually come to think that people stooped as low as to comment on eachothers spelling and/or use of language.
As far as my username is concerned the word Falck is the norwegian word for falcon, which is also my last name; but in all fairness, the next time I have the chance to, I shall make sure to ‘falcon’ off.

Um. Let me break this down for you. I was commenting on how all Hollywood did to make this beautiful woman “ugly” was by slapping on some glasses, braces, and frizzing out her hair. It’s incredibly shallow. I thought, perchance, I could cleverly remark that in a sarcastic manner by making a Not Another Teen Movie reference.
I’ve seen the movie, I got the refference, my comment still stands. It’s not shallow, we are basing ourselves on a picture of a person. None of us can know anything about this person other than the direct fysical appearence we see in the picture.
If you want to go on ahead and speculate about this persons “inner beauty” based on one picture then go on ahead. It does not make the rest of the world shallow for making a statement based on a single picture. Quick, someone supply us with an objective definition of “ugly!” Then, break it down into “ugly inside” and “ugly outside.” It seems to me that most people in America, as our media has trained us to think, assume that “ugly” is “that which does not instantly give men a hard-on.” That definition speaks volumes. Some would say she isn’t ugly because you can’t see her ribs or collar bone. It seems that “beauty” is some ridiculous, dynamic and ephemeral social construct. I know what I prefer in a woman, but far be it from me to judge another ugly. I haven’t watched the show either, but from what I can gather, “ugly” in this sense means “awkward” or “unorthodox.” I think she works at some model agency? Since she’s not on the same level as the clients she works with, she’s considered inferior. I don’t know. Maybe it was something that got lost in translation.

I watched some other version of Ugly Betty in another language and when Betty finally got rid of the braces and glasses, she was really good looking.
She was better looking than any of the other women in the cast. I never saw an episode where, like the Hollywood version, Betty wears black latex/spandex; It would have made it obvious that Betty had the best figure.
I guess the couldn’t find someone who was really good looking and willing to look ugly on TV.

Thanks for your reply, really I wasn’t intending to be offensive or anything. I just wanted to point out that there is so much more to life than physical beauty and stereotypes. In addition, whether there is a lesson there or not is up to you. I just hated seeing the same two arguments thrown back and forth. I do believe firmly that no one has a right to complain about anything until they have worked to make the world a better place. Therefore, I don’t often complain, but want to be darn sure I’ve earned the right to do so. Too many years of listening to college students who have Mommy and Daddy footing the bill complain about an increase in this tax or that tax, which they do not have to pay. It irritates me to see someone with privilege complain without having the energy to use their resources for good. Physical beauty is truly an individual thing. Even when I was grossly pregnant, my husband still told me I was beautiful, and let me tell ya, 8.5 months of pregnancy ain’t a pretty sight. At 18 I thought I knew so very much. Then I found myself at 22 sitting in a dark, hot apartment with only two moldy crackers sitting in my cabinet and a stack of overdue bills because working 3 part time jobs while going to school full time still doesn’t seem to pay all the bills. I think more than anything, I wanted you to know that not all Americans fall into that stereotype you have for us. My years of training has taught me one important thing… There is no group of people that can be classified by a stereotype. Each culture is a group of individuals that ascribe, loosely or tightly to a system of values. Not everyone completely accepts what they have been taught to believe.
And since I’ve made this thread way heavier than normally appears here, I’ll let this go. Seriously, no offense intended, though I can be pretty blunt online. Nice sparring with you Falck. Take care.

I think this is great and so true. Hollywood’s definition of “ugly”- over 120 lbs. with one exception- you’re at least 6 ft. tall. Braces? Come on! Braces make people look better- eventually. There’s no problem with them. And glasses are coming back into style. America Fererra is really pretty. Even how she’s dressed, etc. on that show doesn’t make her ugly. Forget the media!

Over all, though, its funny that I ran into this just because I was looking at the cover of a dvd box set for this series that my friend owns and I was thinking… “She’s not ugly at all…”
Even if the show is supposed to be siding with her or whatever, I think it’s really shallow to call her ugly. Glasses and braces does not mean ugly… I’ve never seen the show so I don’t know if its just because everyone in the show is shallow and calls her that or what… but yeah.
