POE IS THE AWESOME… SHOVE IT HATERS!! SO HE WAS MESSED UP BUT HIS WORK RULES THIS WORLD!!!!

    • Juliet says:

Ok I know everone has a right to speak there mind but I have to disagree with you!
Yes Poe was screwd up but, that is what made him one of the best writers this world has ever seen!
And you most likely don’t even know what goth is!XDD

      • bob says:

        who is it?

        • BobTheEmoGirl ~TeamVladimirDracula~ says:

Goth is not a person. I remember when goth was the old victorian style, y’know castles, fancy clothes, ‘n stuff? Goth is a stereotype and is normally an idiotic one. Most people assume that if you wear black and keep to yourself that you are “goth” or “emo” but really though it’s just stereotyping . . . :D

          • Metalcraze says:

            no one cares

          • username says:

Gothic style predates Victorian, actually. Think massive old cathedrals, and brooding heroes and heroines like Jane Eyre and Heathcliffe! ooh! …there is nothing or no one MORE goth than Heathcliffe out on the moors of England. now THAT is goth! And to be honest, Wuthering Heights does influence today’s goth styles.

            • Janet says:

You do know that Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights were books from the Victorian era, right? And that Heathcliffe was not a heroine, but the heroine’s (Catherine) lover? Get your facts strait.

  1. Captain Blowme says:

I’ll beat the crap out of him like all the other goth emo kids I slay.

    • coco says:

oh no u didn’t, don’t group gothics with those emo shytes.

    • someone says:

goths are eating emos for breakfast … or at least sacrifice them to a dark lord or entity.

      • Kerfuffle Monger says:

This is blasphemy. He was not goth. He was Gothic. Big difference. He wrote Gothic Horror, not goth horror.

        Sheesh.

        • lolziez says:

          uneducated much?

          • Aurora says:

Not uneducated…KM is right..Goth is the punk-outcast crap from the 80′s…gothic is a refined darkness, a love for all things elegantly macabre. Think of the gothic cathedrals of the victorian era..or Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber Of Fleet Street(The one with Depp, of course.) Or just read Poe’s most famous poem(anyone else notice it’s POE-m?) The Raven. You’ll find it to be elegantly dark, beautifully written.

            • Sleepy Burger says:

And as for all the “Emo” comments…

Wouldn’t YOU be depressed if most of your family died horribly?

            • Farrow says:

Oh man you’ve heard of Sweeney Todd.
              From a MOVIE.
That actually happened and you think it’s cool because the movie is interesting wow
              get a life

    • Doc235 says:

tell ya what tough guy, i am 57, bad heart, and just as bad an attitude and lamers like you are the reason a lot of kids actually DO kill themselves, would LOVE to meet you sometime on the street and tell you i am goth AND emo, see if you could beat the crap out of ME! much less a teenager
oh, did i mention i LOVE mixed martial arts? and oh, idon’t use or believe in weapons, well, except my body as one. so let me know if you reallly REALY are a tough guy, I AM. moron. go get a clue, then come back and tell us about it

    • Kurai says:

How Dare you!! Edgar Allen Poe is an amazing poet and inspirational man! Secondly, emos and Goths have nothing in common. Emos are pussies who whine about life, cut themselves to get attention, like to dress like bad Goth rip-offs and pretend they understand such things.

plus you can’t beat him up, he’s dead.

      • Korfakiz says:

        And skinnyJeans.
        Ugh.

      • BobTheEmoGirl ~TeamVladimirDracula~ says:

Look I agree with you on the Poe is awesome part but really!? True “emo” kids are only “emo” because they feel and express emotions differently than other people, you don’t have to dress “emo” to be “emo”. Cutting is something only some do. These kids do it because they feel that the physical pain will stop or atleast overlap the emotional pain that they feel for whatever reason. And as I said before you don’t have to DRESS “emo” to BE “emo”. But really though its all stereotypes. Which are stupid.

    • Andrea says:

Wow! You must be real fun at parties! Captain Douchebag!

    • vampyre_smiles says:

Seriously. You’re the type who tries too hard to be tough. lrn2badass

    • that_creepy_chik says:

hm, you’re giving me impaling thoughts… and you’re on them. run for your life… (if you know what impaling means, dumbass)

    • BobTheEmoGirl ~TeamVladimirDracula~ says:

Go to hell. you probably think all goth/emo kids are stupid little pussies but trust me those “goth” kids have friends and they CAN fight and probably gang up on you, not to mention all of that metal on their clothing can be used as a weapon : ). Also shut the hell up stereotypes are stupid and make you look/sound/seem ignorant for the fact that you use those terms. Also unless you’ve had a traumatic experience as a child involving a “goth” person you have no reall reason to hate “goth” people as much as you seem to, therefore making your argument invalid and quite frankly “fail”. Thank you have a nice day : ).

  2. ALLEGRAAA says:

Who is that, Poe? It had better be Poe!

(sorry if this posts more than once!)

    • Katty says:

Yep it’s the wonderful Poe :)

      • The L says:

        Indeed!

Shout-out to anyone else out there with a copy of his complete works! :D

        • Schmoe says:

I have a copy of his complete tales and poems, but that’s not all he wrote.

          • Vila Restal says:

I have the complete works on my E-Book (and also a copy of the “Fall of the House of Usher”) The man was really a grossly undervalued genius. Most of the categories of literature (fantasy, SciFi, Mystery etc) that people read just wouldn’t have got off the ground without him. It just goes to prove you can’t have genius without madness.

  3. fasfan says:

Why should I be hailing ANY goth? Isn’t the whole point of being goth to be lowkey?
EMO: It’s like Goth.. but for pussies.
Truth is.. I think they’re all freaks. Goths and Emos… I can’t tell the difference or even begin to understand the point. Why worship death? Just go ahead and do it so we normal people don’t have to look at you anymore.

    • Fatzilla says:

It IS rather obvious that you don’t understand anything about Goths or Emos, now that you mention it…

    • No requests PLOX says:

Worship death? You might be thinking about some predominantly gothic CULTS. But not actual gothic people. Please take some time out of your day to go and get a clue.

The real truth is, goths are just normal people who LOOK freakish.

It’s just another fashion trend nowadays, anyway.

    • YumYum says:

Yeah, the only real problem is that too many emos think they’re goth. It dilutes the purity.

Now me, I don’t worship death, I just acknowledge and respect her. We’ve met frequently enough that we’re familiar with each other.

    • lol says:

      LOL
      You’re stupid.

      • fasfan says:

Wow.. now THAT is a witty comment. Smart. Inciteful. Poignant even. I think we can all learn a thing or two from your post. Thank you for taking the time to share it with us all.

    • Korfakiz says:

There is no worship of death.
There is a “Worship” of sorts of the dark and macabre sides of life, Death being one of them.
Emos just whine about death, begging for it.

And the only real freaks are the ones who can’t think for themselves, the Abercrombie and Fitch tools, the folks with the closd minds.

  4. BarbRyan says:

What about A. Blackwood or H.P. Lovecraft?

  5. Failev says:

H.P. Lovecraft isn’t particularly goth in my opinion. However I’m biased and rather think Mary Shelly is the one true goth. Not only did she burst into the gothic style, but she had her husbands heart for a bookmark. puts Poe to shame.

    • Jessi says:

Lol, for once I’m glad that I’m a big enough dork that I actually read the comments as I was going to post something about Shelley myself! I mean, I think Poe’s Goth, but c’mon!

    • DaYaoiFan says:

“Burst into”? Walpole’s “Castle of Otranto” came way before her.

  6. henry says:

hahaha awesome, he’s my adolescence idol.

  7. xq28guy says:

Poe’s works’re some of the earliest and THE greatest Gothic literature. Thanks for recognizing him.

  8. Candystripe Legs says:

Wouldn’t the Goths and Visigoths be the true goths, really?

It saddens me though that nowadays people think that goths are kids who wear all black and listen to nu metal. Why has everyone forgotten Siouxsie? Joy Division? Alien Sex Fiend?

  9. Schmoe says:

Edgar! The Gothic tradition in literature goes back further, but dear Edgar perfected it.
Do some research in a real (i.e. three-dimensional ) library folks and find out what a tortured genius he was.

“True!–nervous–very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why WILL you you say that I am mad?”-Poe (“The Tell-Tale Heart”)

    Edgar!

    • Jessi says:

Annabel Lee was always my favorite by him (I even named my dog after that poem…). True, not as dark as The Tell Tale Heart or even The Raven, but still, one doesn’t really have to do that much research to find out anything about the man – just pay attention in any high school English class. Though, that is asking a bit much from the youth of today…

  10. Chai says:

Poe is famous for his poetry but did anyone ever bother to look at his other works? He wrote a good amount of essays, and pioneered the mystery story genre. There’s more to him than The Raven and Annabell Lee.

And if I were a goth, all great poems aside, I wouldn’t want to be associated with someone who obsessed over and married his twelve year old cousin. I’m just sayin’.

    • AC says:

      I thought she was 14……..

      • lora_vine says:

Aren’t you thinking of that guy who Sang “great Balls of Fire”?

        • Vila Restal says:

I always thought that song was about Jerry Lee Lewis’ sexually transmitted disease :-)

          • Vila Restal says:

Actually all this stuff said about Poe and his 13 year old cousin. This sort of thing wasn’t all that uncommon in Poe’s day. Remember he is living in a world without trains and the furthest you can go is by Horseback. This means that communities are likely to be largely inbred, due to the fact that your immediate family are likely to be living in the immediate area and the fact that your distant family aren’t likely to be much further off either. So it leaves very little choice when it comes to girlfriends you might be able to get someone who isn’t realted to you, but very often you’ll find that they are. Therefore in those times “kissin’ cousins” were pretty much left to get on with it. Also 13 years old wasn’t that uncommon to get married at either as people died at a much younger age, so it was pretty much common practice to, to put it crudely – “get them shacked up and dropping sprogs as often as possible in order to further the line and also to ensure the population of the area”. Besides which Poe’s marriage to his cousin was apparently very happy and Poe adored her, and Poe’s mental problems didn’t start properly until she died of TB, then the darker works began.

            • Acid Otaku says:

yes Poes cousin was thirteen. but trains were far more common than you make them out to be. his aunt was strongly opposed to this marriage at the cousins age of eleven and told him to wait till she was sixteen. when the cousin was thirteen the aunt saw he was enthralled with her and allowed her to be wed.

as for his works they were all very dark and obsessed with life after death. something to do with watching your mom three to five nights a week and coming home to make you dinner. as you can see, at the age of three he was already exposed to many more less than tasteful experiences as most people would in there entire life.

deaths from “Consumption” [later to be 'possibly' TB] his mother went into a coughing fit that corroded her lungs and she officially ‘drowned’, his first wife and also his cousin afdter they were wed. the death of his cousin was by far the worst. at this point he locked himself in his room for several weeks only to open the door for food. is this period he had many darker works but i do not believe them to be much darker than his overall tone of death and life after.

              • Vila Restal says:

Read his COMPLETE works. I have them on my E-Book. His early works did contain some “horror” elements but he actually wrote about anything and everything – “The Unparalleled Adventures of Hans Pfall” – A Story of one man’s journey to the moon by balloon (or was it!!). An account of the famous hoax of the automated Chess Player, The Landscape Garden, and many other fiction and non fiction works that had a decidedly non horror touch. BTW Trains in America were just coming into common usage in the late 1830s-1840. They were only invented in Britain in 1830.

    • ryszard says:

He is also considered to be the father of modern detective science.

      • NameAlreadyInUse says:

        Who? Jerry Lee Lewis!?

      • bugwitch says:

Hmm….I always thought that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is the father of modern detective science….and “science”.

I do love Poe and have a copy of his ‘Complete Works’.

As for other goths…what about Goya?

        • Vila Restal says:

And even further back what about Caravaggio??

        • Pooch says:

“Detective Science” maybe. “Detective Fiction” definitely not. Poe died a decade before Doyle was born. The Mystery Writers Of America awards are called Edgars for a reason.

(a real reason. Not like the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards being called Oscars because “that statue looks like my uncle Oscar”.)

      • DaYaoiFan says:

I never liked “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”, and don’t get me started on “The Mystery of Marie Roger”…

    • DaYaoiFan says:

My favorites: “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “The Oval Portrait” = )

  11. Korin says:

Goth: not about worshiping death or dressing in all black. Its a state of mind, that yes, often involves black clothing and freakish hair. But mostly its about being out there and real. All the real goths I’ve met are unique, open-minded people who just like to push the “normal” societal tolerance for things that are different.
Emo kids: don’t even get me started with the horrible music and tight clothes and scratching themselves…. ugh

Edgar Allen Poe definitely was a goth :)

    • Kurai says:

Bless it be, my friend! You’ve got it right!

      • Evolution says:

I’d agree with you on this except calling goth “freakish” is ignorant. Unique yes, freakish no. Besides, in this day and age, their uniqueness is almost normal.

        • Jessi says:

Aw, always remember that you are unique – just like everyone else!

          • Vila Restal says:

From Monty Python’s Life of Brian:

            BRIAN: You’re all Individuals.
            CROWD: Yes. We’re all Individuals
            BRIAN: You’re all different
            CROWD: Yes we’re all different
ONE PERSON IN THE CROWD: I’m Not!!

    • Candystripe Legs says:

I have to disagree with you on the part that goth is a “state of mind”. Goth refers to many things, to the barbarians of the past, to the genre of literature to which Mr.Poe belongs, but nowadays goth is a type of music, dating back to Joy Division, Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy. Goths are the fans of this type of music and dress in black because thats what the musicians did. Its purely aesthetic.

  12. Nobodyimportant says:

    O: Poe is amazing…
He pretty much defined an entire genre.
    Love that guy.

  13. Tempestates says:

Ditto. I love his some of his work.

  14. Doombird says:

Is it just me, or does ol’ Edgar have a pretty sweet rack goin’ on in that picture?

He’s famous for his poetry, but it was recently discovered he moonlighted as a calendar model. WTF?

    • Schmoe says:

It’s probably a retouched photo, Poe died in the early 1840′s when photography was in its infancy. This picture is more clear and distinct than any I have ever seen. The shadow below the “stuffed shirt” gives you that illusion. (Trust me on this. I’m both a Poe and “rack” fan.)

      • Pooch says:

October of 1849 is “early 1840′s” to you?

But I’m all with you on the being both a Poe and rack fan part.

  15. lol says:

I ‘lol’ at the fact that people who comment on this site actually think their opinions matter.

  16. Afonso says:

Why would she say “how dare they boo Piper” – she blamed a child for the boos when she knew full well it was for her. That is emotional abuse no matter how you call it.

  17. Tomato says:

Poe is my great (x great) uncle. We share genes through his parents (my great x great grands) Gotta watch out for the celiac disease and diabetes… they’ll drive you mad Mad MAD! (oh, and the alcoholism doesn’t help)
I’m not emo or goth. The real thing doesn’t have to pose. (lol)

  18. Rebecca says:

Forget Bill Tokio-Hotel-Whatever, I’d so DO POE!

  19. rubydisaster says:

    *lit nerd impression*
technically he was a romantic not a goth

  20. tamera says:

hey um i love this guy and i wanted to marry him but now hes dead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. Noen says:

    What about Alaric?

  22. Alex says:

I can’t believe we live in a day and age where no one can express themselves or be interested in the macabre or supernatural without being labeled “emo”. People who even use the term emo are ignorant fools. Emo was an emotional brand of post-hardcore back in the 80′s, it has nothing to do with being a whiny teenager.

  23. Jil says:

    *bows*
    I love it!

  24. momma says:

To those who can discern the difference between the “goth” fad and the nature of the “gothic” mindset/aesthetic set up, congrats, you are appreciated.

I don’t think Poe was one of the best ever, but for his genre he was quite talented.

    • Vila Restal says:

Errr. He dammned near created the Genre. After Mary Shelley who wrote Frankenstein, he was the one who grabber the baton and carried it, and honed and perfected the Genre. Remember this was decades before Dracula climbed out of his coffin and said “I VANT TO SUCK YOUR BLOOOOD!!!” :-)

  25. YourDrugAddictDaughter says:

    The Only True Goth :)

  26. Theguy says:

    Does he have boobs?

  27. Kaylin says:

Or at least the first genuine goth.
This man was 100% depressed, and demented.
That’s why his work is awesome. =]

  28. Weiss says:

Edgar Allen Poe = awesome. Especially “the Raven” and “The Red Death” IMHO.
Stop trying to define goth, ppl. It just doesn’t work, because it’s more or less what everyone thinks it is (not just the majority, but everyone). If you think wearing black and listening to industrial makes you goth, then sure, if it works for you. Same if you think it’s a mindset. Or that it involves worshipping death and holding bloody sacrifice-rituals (although that’s more a misconception/cult thing, closer to the vampire trend). Personally, I see it as a mindset thing (not meaning “I think I’m goth, so I am goth”. More or less, my views on the world and life itself). The aesthetics are more just an expression of what I like. If you were to see me in the mall, you could just as easily call me emo, metal, or punk as you could goth, just because I like clothes/accessories that “fit in” with all the different groups.

  29. dcoy says:

I was going to just post “Nevermore” but then I decided against it.

  30. j sesame says:

All good… or bad… or whatever. Just report what you see in life, & you’ll do as well as Poe or any other artistic genius. esp if you’re high on CO or some other overstimulating & destructive substance, which is the case these days as much as in Poe’s & Van Gough’s days. they had their gas lights & toxic art paints, we have stress (makes lots of CO in our nervous systems, it is a NT, a neurotransmitter. Luckily we have tons of toxic drugs, legal & illegal, but mostly it’s in the food & water & air. We also get it from stress & smoking & from poorly operating gas heaters or furnaces. Anyway. See the movie ALICE coming up March (madnes, hare) 5, with the insane Johnny Dep. Modern world, I mean since about Billy Shakespear’s times or even earlier, say ‘Christ’, is all about rampant disease, madness, insanity, horror of every kind, ‘lies, damn lies & marketing’ (Mark Twain). Just report what you see & feel & hear in your ‘art’ work & you will be on it like a fly on (Chesser) cat food. :)

    • j sesame says:

Yes, he, lke more & more modern men, has man-boobs. It’s a very touched up done over picture. He always put a hand in his coat over his gall bladder since his liver was so bad it hurt & made his eyes droop horribly & his bags under his eyes, & his whole one side of his face smaller than the other & his mouth slanted. Look at the forehead, swollen. Headaches, pains all over. this is typical of ‘environmental syndrome’ or CO poisoning.

  31. Tasha says:

Poe? isnt that the red teletubbie of fthat show teletubbies from channel 4 PBS?….. enlighten me please i love learning :D

  32. MJLove says:

Oh my goth I love Edgar Allen Poe he is one of my main inspirations.

  33. j. sesame says:

That’s no rack, its one of those board-like things men used to put under their shirts to make it look like they had a chest. I have an 8×10 of him on my refrigerator (the one sign of a true Goth) from a website on Carbon Monoxide (you know, the old time gas lights), & it is an untouched version of the one above. You need to get that one people. Real Goth. Talk real & put up a faked up photo? Whatever. Picking too many nits perhaps, but there’s a big difference in the effect. The above all smooth & cute sort of, & the untouched-up one on my ‘fridge very very SPOOKY, from out of the living dead, aren’t we all, or don’t we see it yet. Modern living takes an even worse toll on us today than it did in Poe’s day. Anyway I wrote Edgar Allen (no Poe) on the 8×10 on my ‘fridge just to see. No one didn’t know it was Poe. We do see deep down we see, we just don’t know we do here on the retouched airbrushed surface of things. Wake up. Be Still & Know. Do-Be-Do-Be-Do.

  34. Failatusernames says:

    Nevermore…

  35. Hanna_Marie says:

I lovelovelove Edgar Allan Poe, my favorite poem of his is AnnaBelle Lee :D

  36. Amanda says:

Poe rocks, he was a genius, let’s leave it at that.

  37. Claregurl says:

From childhood’s hour I have not been
As others were — I have not seen
As others saw — I could not bring
My passions from a common spring —
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow — I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone —
    And all I lov’d — I lov’d alone —
Then — in my childhood — in the dawn
Of a most stormy life — was drawn
From ev’ry depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still —
From the torrent, or the fountain —
From the red cliff of the mountain —
From the sun that ’round me roll’d
In its autumn tint of gold —
From the lightning in the sky
As it pass’d me flying by —
From the thunder, and the storm —
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view —

  38. Winterfrost says:

Tsk tsk. He wasnt goth he wasnt gothic either he was a normal man with a dark way of words I guess william blake was a goth too then for his dark paintings and poetry so was wilfred owen for his broodin depressive poetry on war and death. Goth was originally a region it was not a genre. The genre goth these days aint goth and neither are emos there dumb ass kids missin the point of been alternative thats it.

    • U All Must Die says:

“Kids these days….” blah blah blah. Okay, get over it. Poe… was not normal. He was insane. He took something similar to heroin to get creative, as did a lot of writers/artists. Poe also married a thirteen year old girl. Poe. Was. Not. Normal. Use Apstrophes. Poe’s poetry is amazing, but really, you people are all just nit-pickers. Some “goths” just like the style. Emo kids might have an awful home life. Life can sometimes suck epically. No matter what goth or gothic used to be, you all missed the point of this LoL. The point is about our modern standards.

  39. U All Must Die says:

I hought it was funny. You’re alljust wanting something to pick at… losers. Get a life. Really.

  40. mini says:

the father of emo poetry, know the difference!
