          • JD Wohlever says:

@HP Whatever point you are attempting to make is drowning in the soup of awful grammar you call text. Learn to speak and WRITE English before attempting to partake in commenting in an English speaking comment section.

            • Ryo says:

              See, that wasn’t so difficult.

            • Elestren says:

              You. Are so awesome.

            • John says:

Intelligence IS equal to spelling. When you apply for work, you will realize this. Employers see it this way. When you butcher the English language, whether it be online or on paper, it really does reflect on your intelligence. People will think that you are less intelligent if you cannot spell or use proper grammar and punctuation.

              • Jesus says:

Actually, no HP has it right. Spelling and grammar is not the only thing about intelligence. I am actually learning about this in school right now. There are actually 8 or so different kinds of intelligence, and yes, this does include reading and writing (verbal, as my professor calls it), but there are other forms of intelligence as well. These include areas like math, art, music, interpersonal, and intrapersonal. Bringing up Einstein was a good example. Einstein wasn’t so hot at verbal intelligence, but look at him, he was the best mathematician of our time. Unfortunately enough though, John is right. Employers haven’t really caught on to this, so it does help to read and write properly. Don’t get me wrong HP, I’m not saying that it’s your fault that you can’t. I understand perfectly the conditions of dyslexia. However, that doesn’t stop the previous statement from being any less true.

                • Bonkers455 says:

                  WE ARE TALKING ABOUT QUEEN!

                • Red Rule says:

                  Agreed, well mostly then.
I agree with you that employers unfortunaly still judge people by spelling, and they’re wrong to do so.
And I also agree that intelligence isn’t 1 single definable thing, but I believe that it could be divided up into even more then 8 parts, “maths” could even be split up in geometry, algebra, logaritmics and umh.. other stuff.

Take for example Einstein, his math skills weren’t all that great, he was a great physicist though, but he actually had someone else do/check the math part for him most of the time.

Now you might be wondering why i’m posting all this useless extra information to a ~2 month old post…. The answer is simple; I’m bored. ^^

              • Chad says:

So, if you’re really smart and you travel to a country in which you don’t speak and can’t write the language… you’re stupid?

              • Kevin says:

                eats, shoots, and leaves.

            • natos007 says:

you tell em HP word up to u

            • effUintheBUTT says:

              so basically you’re retarded?

              • HP says:

if you have to resort to out dated words like that at least know what they mean if i was retarded ( an IQ of below 70) i doubt i would be able to work a computer let a alone read or write. again i point out dyslexia is not related to intelligence and opposite to commonly held misconceptions most dyslexics are in fact quite clever just frustrated they cant always right down what they can say.

                • jdwohlever says:

Sorry my bad, had no idea you had disabilities. I have seen too many people who have no problems write like crap because they are lazy or think it’s cool to act dumb. Again, I apologize that I was talking about your text without knowing you had problems. This is a cause of me assuming. And Assuming makes an ass out of me.

          • paws4thot says:

This might be pedantic of me, but Freddie was actually bi-sexual, not gay.

If you think that, just don’t comment xD

        • fgxs says:

shut the hell up!! Freddie had more talent in his moustache than you probably have in your entire body!!

        • Saundra says:

You say that like it’s an insult to be gay. What a moron.

        • someone says:

Actually, Freddie was bi….and as far as I know the other guys were straight. So, no.

        • Born2Rock says:

I see you know where the CAPS or SHIFT key is. However, I must inform you that you failed to continue using it after the 4th S.
And when did one “!” not be enough to show excitement?

      • The Lilac Pilgrim says:

If they failed to use the shift key after aforementioned ‘s’, how did they type those exclamation marks?

“And when did one ‘!’ not be enough to show excitement?”

OW. You have successfully abused grammar. How does it feel to be a hypocrite?

      • Anon. says:

You sir, have been picking on people the entire length of this thread. Over things such as spelling and punctuation. Might i remind you that this is the INTERNET and that PROPER ENGLISH doesn’t exist here. I seriously do not understand why a twat such as yourself would find in necessary to come on here and annoy the frick out over people, who are trying to have a conversation, about spelling and grammar. If your that into S&G (spelling and grammar) go become and English teacher and piss off angry 9th grade kids and get sued for the abuse you dish out when you see an error.

Once again, get off our internet, sincerely the people who don’t like wankers ruining their boards.

HP is probably the nicest person in this entire forum, and you critcize her skills as a typist, despite the fact that she told you she has Dyslexia. You are kidding right?.. Plz tell me you are kidding. Freddie Mercury, the most amazing performer/songwriter/singer to ever grace the face of this unworthy planet. The man who was given to the music world in the form of a homo-sexual gift from God.

  19. thereisnodanaonlyzuul says:

I totally love Freddie! Awesome, outrageous, irreplaceable and still missed! If you don’t know who he is, you must have been living under a rock somewhere…

    • William says:

And what have you against folks who live under rocks? I know a number of well-mannered snakes who live under rocks, and would probably take offense to your comment.

  20. Fred says:

He is immortal, he has inside him blood of kings!
He has no rival, no man can be his equal!

  21. urix says:

    True.
We wil always love you, Freddie…

  22. Matrix says:

Too bad Rolling Stone magazine does not agree. They don’t even have him listed as one of the Top 10 singers in Rock and R&B…. *sigh* He’s #1 by a long shot in my book

    • katillac says:

Consider the source on that one. I see it the same way as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducting people who never were, and never will be, rockers.

Freddy Mercury was one hell of a singer *and* performer.

      • ICDK says:

I totally agree with you. I will never visit the R&R Hall of Fame because it’s a sham and after hearing about Rolling Stone magazine…guess what I will never again purchase or read? That’s just wrong. You can’t have a top ten list of best R&R singers and not have Freddie.

Kinda like Metallica losing to Jethro Tull for metal album of the year, or whatever category it was.

        • i live basically in the shadow of the rock and roll hall of fame… been there a couple times. the actual hall of fame part is BORING, but the museum is pretty awesome. seeing the costumes and set pieces and cars and everything is really cool. with as expensive as it is though, it doesn’t make sense to go more than once every 2 years or so though.
          -
while i agree with you that the inductee process is a sham, i don’t think the actual hall and museum are. half the inductees are worthy, the other half we’ll just not mention.

      • frangimerda says:

I’ve not seen their Top 10, but I think they are also trying to give some exposure to lesser known singers, which is a good thing, since by now Freddie Mercury could literally disappear from press and his fame wouldn’t change.

    • Kismet says:

Before I get kicked, I’d like to say that he most definitely should be number 2. if we’re talking overall popularity, I’m thinking Zeppelin or Floyd. It think they SHOULD be number one, but I think maybe the other two would be above him if it was popularity related.

      • doodilydoo says:

I disagree–while they’re both great bands, Queen (still) appeals to a much larger audience. My four year old brother could name you ten Queen songs, but would stare at you confused if you asked him for a Floyd song.

        • afdsdf says:

He’s Four. That will be entirely from what his parents have been listening to in the car or whatever. I’d put Floyd before Queen, but I do love them both.

          • someone says:

I could never choose between the two. I’m a HUGE Floyd fangirl (yes, there is such a thing) but Queen is a different type of awesome.

  23. RainbowColouredLlama says:

I love Freddie. He was an incredible musician, and just wow. No singer can ever be his equal.

  24. Wyde says:

World: “Don’t go, Freddie! We love you!”
Freddie: “Too late, I’ve got to go. Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth.”
World: “Don’t leave us! The show MUST go on!”
    Freddie: “Goodbye.”
    .
    .
That man is epic win in human form.

  25. Grumpy Curmudgeon says:

Whenever I feel sad about his passing, I remind myself: That was one guy that made the most of every second that he did have. If I live to 100 I’ll still have accumulated less than one tenth of the life experiences he squeezed into his too-short life.experiences

  26. Ignatz says:

The world’s first Indian rock star. Requiescat in pace, et lux eternam luceat eius.

  27. WCIB says:

So the guy dies as a legend and then, here, gets props for being a legend still? He’s not doing anything but rotting.

And Freddie and Queen were huge sellouts. It’s not an opinion, it’s rock n’ roll history fact.

  28. EyebrowRaised says:

…Pretty sure it IS just an opinion, considering “rock ‘n’ roll” is completely subjective…

    • This guy over here says:

Rock n’ roll is not completely subjective. Things like “punk rock” and “metal,” etc., CAN BE subjective, but “rock n’ roll” is not.

      • EyebrowRaised says:

Yeah…I’m going to have to go ahead and disagree with you on that one. (Not being a snot; I’d just like to have a civilized debate.)

The things that are considered to be rock these days, I would think, prove that the genre is definitely subjective. If, say, Chuck Berry and Poison, for example, are both housed under the umbrella of rock, what does that say about the roots of rock versus what it has mutated into? Sure, if we’re talking music theory, rock *might* be considered objective…but music that is decidedly not rock can still follow the same structure musically.

I’m genuinely interested in why you think it’s not subjective. *scouts’ honor that this won’t turn into some lame flame war*

        • This guy over here says:

          Okay, let’s do this.

First, please note that I did say that “Rock . . . is not completely subjective.”

What you’ve called “The Umbrella of Rock” is what I have said is NOT subjective. The category is very broad, and people can debate until they’re blue in the face over the sub-genres, and the sub-sub-genres (and so on) that exist therein, but Rock, or as I referred to it “Rock n’ Roll,” has specific characteristics that span its entire culture, including music theory and also specific performance style, among other things. It is key that you remember that this is a very broad category of music, and its era is not over yet (despite what some would say) like, for instance, the baroque style’s era is over. It is still around, it is still growing, and it is still evolving.

Chuck Berry and Poison are very different acts, but they are both Rock. We can debate whether or not Poison was metal, if Def Leppard was a hair band, if All American Rejects are emo, if Mott The Hoople was glam, if Blind Melon was grunge, or if Slapstick was punk or ska or ska-punk or ska-core, etc. etc. But the fact is, at the end of the day, they are ALL Rock. Any debate as to whether these bands and most others are Rock is silly. I have a co-worker who likes to say that U2 isn’t “Rock, they’re pop,” and her justification is that bands like Tool and Evanescence are what “Rock” is really. This is ignorant and egocentric. And the fact that someone like her says this, or that a classic-rock fan might say that anything before or after the 72-81 stretch isn’t really rock, or the 14-year-old who can’t see why anyone would have called Frampton a rock act, does not make Rock n’ Roll completely subjective; it makes those people wrong.

Now, let’s quickly look at the fringes of all of this. As pointed out, I said that rock is not COMPLETELY subjective. There are some aspects of it that are, but if I had to put that into a percentage I’d say it was barely more than 5%. Take, for example, modern Country. Everything called “Country” that has hit the scene after Garth Brooks, some have called “Country-rock” and some would say that, in the end, its closer to Rock music than actual Country and Western (and I would agree). This is something based off of music theory and performance styles, not their sited influences and on-stage buddies. There are also groups known as “post-rock” that are up for debate, like Polyphonic Spree or Sigur Ros or Arcade Fire, that use rock instrumentation for a sound that is not typically referred to as “Rock.” But is it really “after rock?” Or is it just another broad sub-category?

To conclude this section, what music would you say can follow the “same structure musically” but be decidedly “not rock?”

          • EyebrowRaised says:

            Sorry for the delay.

And thanks for being very well-spoken. :)

I think you have swayed me. I see what you’re saying about “rock-n-roll” versus “rock”, even though a lot of people would say we’re anal retentive for saying they are different. I am usually more of a purist when it comes to throwing around genres that loosely. And I guess, then, my argument about music isn’t with you, but to the person I was replying to in the first place for putting Queen in the category of rock-n-roll, and for having to be a killjoy about something just to be a killjoy.

However, I think the “debate” I had with you was a good thing to come of a naysayer situation. I agree with you completely regarding what you said about rock-n-roll music theory, and the fact that it hasn’t seen its end. I also agree about its evolution, but I suppose the elitist in me sees a majority of it (at least, mainstream music, if the root of this debate is Queen) as a regression rather than an advance in the genre.

Going even further back than the advent of rock-n-roll, I have a tendency to see nearly every major genre of Western music to be influenced by the blues, as (duh) rock-n-roll is the fraternal twin to the blues. And as far as music theory goes–12-bar, blue notes, the subjects of lyrics, etc., etc.–you can hear its influences in nearly every popular Western genre. I liked that you pointed out the rock in some country; that is totally accurate. That is actually one of the genres I was thinking of when I said that some music followed rock theory but wasn’t considered rock (and I should have been more specific by saying rock-n-roll).

I suppose what my problem is with the loose title of rock is that there are some artists–genuine artists, in the aesthetic sense of the word–whose work I really respect, and then there are coattail-clingers and undeserving idiots that get lumped in with them by people such as your co-worker. The snob in me just refuses to accept that the latter are rock, and I guess that is just my personal opinion of what is considered rock. I do not think Queen are straight-up rock-n-roll, though–do you? There are hints of it, but I wouldn’t put them in the original form of the genre.

I think my irritation with the person I responded to caused me to not think through what I was saying when I should have just scoffed and ignored it, haha.

            • This guy over here says:

The problem is that you cannot exclude a band that is genuinely rock from the genre to which they belong just because they’re morons and coattail-clingers. At least not from that “umbrella of rock” that was discussed, which I hold is only debatable on its contents for the fringe categories (like country-rock and post-rock). However, I will always support the debate of sub-genres of rock. One of my biggest pet peeves is hearing people discuss what “emo” is, and 99% of the time they’re taking one of two extremes: “Fallout Boy, et al., is emo,” or “The only real emo band was Rites of Spring.” Groan. The former is wrong because bands like Fallout Boy and those other piles of crap are the continued softening and mainstream-polishing of punk rock and actually don’t have anything to do with emo (and subsequently, less-informed people conclude that emo is just poppy punk), and the latter is wrong because that opinion was established by a teenie-bopper magazine journalist that wrote a book about what he thought was emo but was actually 90% Dashboard Confessional worship. Anyway, I digress.

I do consider Queen a rock band (or a rock n’ roll band – I’ve not ever been clear on the distinction so I choose to not acknowledge one). I put them well inside the large umbrella. They are hard to classify when it comes to a sub-genre. The term “classic rock” is weak because no classic rock band was called a classic rock band in their day, and additionally, Queen is distinctly different and certainly more diverse than other “classic rock” bands. But there’s no debate in my mind if they are a rock band or not.

  29. Ranchonmars says:

I’ve been watching Live at Wembley ’86 this week. What an amazing talent. One of rock’s greatest frontmen!

  30. Moonbeam says:

I hate the fact that the first time I ever saw Queen, he was already gone. Paul Rodgers did put on a good show, though, all things considered.

  31. anon says:

ugh. I hate when fans caption pictures of celebrities talking about how great they are. This isn’t a fan site.

  32. Golden Phoenix says:

I was five years old when Freddie died, and i still love his music as much today as i did when i was younger.

Ipicked up my taste in music from my parents, and among many many other things, i will always be grateful for that.

He wasn’t just a singer, he was a true Showman, there won’t ever be another like him, but i’m grateful to whatever deitity you chose to believe in for sharing him with us, and to him for giving us fans so much of his life.

And that’s a one fo the best pics of him i think.

  33. Kismet says:

Oh god….. This man has such a huge part of my heart….

Have you ever heard of Mika? Mika’s a singer, and he reminds me of Mercury at times, which is no small feat. He’s pretty awesome ^_^ Makes me think of what Freddie would be doing today, but with a lot of energy that he probably wouldn’t have had.

    • Luna says:

I love Mika- he’s one of my favorites :0)

Nobody can replace Freddie, though, that’s for sure- but Mika is incredibe :D

    • Donna says:

Your comparing Mika to Freddie *smacks forehead* god…..Mika…..Sounds like a woman on extra oestrogen, it just isn’t right, but Freddie was and always will be the best!!! He’s an absolute legend there’s a reason they immortalised him with a statue! because he’s the freakin bomb!

      • Luna says:

Have you ever HEARD Mika? His vocal range is mind-blowing, and his lyrics are thought-provoking and have loads more depth than most singers nowadays….. please don’t diss unless you know exactly what you’re dissing :]

Kismet isn’t comparing Mika to Freddie, just saying Mika reminds of Freddie- they are both, indisputably, spectacular.
But yes, Freddie has done a lot more, and therefore will be celebrated much much more :D

Freddie Mercury = epic win. Screw Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers >_>

    • Phlegmboy says:

I agree with your Freddie Mercury comment but I cannot agree with the other bit. I wouldn’t crew Hannah Montana or The Jonas Brothers. I respect my penis too much to let it go anywhere near any of that trash.

  40. Candy says:

Yes Freddie was and is a true legend of music but he wasn’t gay he was bisexual.

  41. Kevin says:

Watch from about 6:30 on. You will see the legend in action.

  42. Andie says:

Is that the reverse warrior pose?

  43. jdwohlever says:

Again, for the last time. I did not know HP had dyslexia. I assumed he was just being lazy or trying to act like so many thuggish type do on the net now. Yes I made the improper assumption based on very little information and for that I am wrong. However, you have to admit a lot of people today just don’t give a darn if they write correctly or not. That doesn’t remove my blame but it just shows where I was coming from.

  44. solo piano says:

UM, HE’S DEAD. IS THAT DOING IT RIGHT? DIDN’T THINK SO.

    • Lazybones says:

Every one of your comments that I’ve read is hateful nonsense. Some people, like Freddie Mercury did, enjoyed their lives, spent it being creative and brought pleasure to others (giggity). Now, why not tell us what you’ve done with your life?

…and yet, even though he is dead (19 years today as I type this), people all around the world are raising a glass in remembrance today of his great talent, brilliant on-stage persona, incredible vocal range…uh, I think you get my point.

So yup, it IS doing it right.
