Come home Hugh, we still love you!
Not until he is cured of cancer, lupus and wilson’s.
Well, he’s cured 2, only one to go! watch out lupis, here hugh comes!
Do you think there is a cure for Wilson?
NO
*starts drooling*
Now you know how irritating it is for the british to constantly have to hear americans put on god awful english accents just so the american can always play the hero, regardless of said hero’s nationality… robin hood, braveheart, bridget jones…
Mel Gibson is not american.
Correct. Mel Gibson is Australian.
Nope, American he is.
He has a dual nationality.
he was born in new york and anyway, he’s not scottish! americans always get to be the hero. bloody america, always takes the credit for everything. even took France’s credit for winning the war – twice!! honestly. but anyway, point is, now you know how annoying it is when anoither country tries to impersonate an accent. and america is usually said country. bloody america. gr.
Hey. hey don’t be jealous. We had Bush. (/sarcasm)
Well played
Damn. Good one.
Brown? Though admittedly we didn’t actually vote for him…
it doesn’t make a difference, because Gibson did a Scottish accent, not British in Braveheart…
Nonetheless, the accent is his own.
Are you sure?
Oh well, we can let them have him. Purely out of the kindness of our hearts, you understand.
And William Wallace is Scottish, not English.
Exactly…. His “accent” makes my brain bleed…
scottish accent=sexy
Except I think he was English. His family were from Shropshire and at the time of his birth, the area he was born in was under English rule.
Could very easily be thinking of someone else though…
that is why Mel is the best!
Except that his American accent isn’t bad. So, I guess we STILL don’t know.
Second that…I don’t hear Hugh Laurie’s accent on House. Us silly Americans can’t understand it when he sounds so British when he’s accepting awards.
OMG, I thought Rene did a marvelous accent in Bridget Jones!!!
Oh aye, she was great. I thought she was English!
And Johnny Depp can do accents… ‘Cos he’s Johnny Depp…
Yeah, he can somehow take on an accent and have it sound somewhat authentic.
johnny depp is an incredible actor sortof like heath ledger…
I though Rene did a marvelous accent in ‘allo ‘allo…
Brilliant, even!
Actually, if you listen carefully to Robin Hood… Kevin Costner doesn’t actually drop the american accent…
Yes, Hugh, please do.
You can shove that award up yer bum.
He was even worse than “House” in “Stuart Little” and “Stuart Little 2″, playing a doormat *American* father with Geena Davis as the Mrs. Little. EEW.
At least John Cleese still has dignity.
House is a pretty big step up from Stuart Little 1-3 and his ridiculous role in the live action 101 Dalmations. And let’s face it, I *am* American and his American accent is better than mine.
Better than mine as well. People always ask me if I’m Canadian. They look at me in astonishment when I tell them I was born and raised in Cleveland.
Most Canadians I know (i.e. my family, friends, and myself) don’t have an accent at all. We sound like… AMERICANS.
lol, my Canadian friends say the same thing, ‘cept they do have a very slight accent. Then again I know I have a Midwestern accent when compared to the rest of the country, heck I have an accent just from living in a different part of the state(Southern Lower Michigan, compared to Northern Lower Michigan, or Upper Peninsula)
Canadians just say things certain words a little differently. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a full blown “accent” though.
Michiganians don’t have an accent. Ours is the only true english.
Yep. Fellow Michigander here from the southeastern corner of the state (Metro Detroit area, to be vaguely exact). I went to school on the east coast for a few years with students from all over the country, and, while very few people had strong accents, you’d hear the regional differences. Apparently the very flat vowels (such as milk (which sounds like melk) or bag (which sounds like baeg)) are a Midwestern thing, and a friend from North Carolina (who, incidentally, couldn’t hear a pronunciation difference between pull, pool, and poll/pole, and said y’all and all’y'all far too much) used to point this out, especially in regards to another friend from Minnesota who had a particularly strong Midwestern accent. Getting into arguments over linguistics/pronunciation was never very fun because Mr. North Carolina refused to lose.
I do agree that within Michigan and the Midwest at large, accents vary quite a bit, though they are all identifiable as Midwestern.
As far as Michigan accents and unique phrasing goes, this site is particularly informative:
http://www.michigannative.com/ma_home.shtml
And sounding like a bloody american isn’t an accent?
Oh right… I forgot… Americans don’t talk english… They speak american…
“At least John Cleese still has dignity”
COUGH*COUGH*SHREKtheTHIRD*COUGH*COUGH
Okay, so he pimped himself out to a tired sequel for a few lines…I forgot about that…
Did he gain weight?
I actually think his American accent is very good (and yes I’m american). At the very least his American accent is 1000% better than the universal foreign (ie british) accent most American actors use in any movie where they need a foreign accent.
Exactly.
absolutely. british people do NOT talk like the queen, for a start. or like any enid blyton character for that matter. i say old chap, fancy a crumpet, wot wot? home james!
*snort*
Especially if you from up North. Eee aye gum, lass. All that jazz
Fur ee boots a bank quine?
Hugh is a brilliant actor, and I rate his American accent well above Mel Gibson’s attempt at a Scottish accent.
His German accent was awesome. Evil Prince Ludwig anyone?
Oooohhhhh
Mel Gibson’s “Scottish” accent…..
ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch
…It’s painful….
Oh GODDESS YES!!! Hugh just is genius all the way around!!!
Hugh Laurie is awesome, as is his American accent. Though it would be pretty cool to see him in a show where he got to use his own accent
Watch “Black Adder”.
I thought the caption was going to be:
“Can I drop this preposterous award?”
try “a bit of fry and laurie”. the bruce springsteen impression alone should make you wet your pants.
Actually, there is a movie like that. Watch “The Borrowers”
Okay, I give up. What’s wrong with Hugh’s American accent?
Nothing. The only thing that could be preposterous about it would be if he didn’t particularly enjoy using it.
Which I don’t think he does, because who would enjoy having to conciously think about everything you say just to get an accent right
Ahhhh, Hugh Laurie. I’ve been in love with this man ever since I first saw him in Monty Python. *drools*
And I, personally, think his American accent is fine. ‘cept for the slight flaw in his R’s sometimes, but that’s barely noticeable.
Wait, what? When was he on Monty Python?
According to IMDB he was on “Python night: 30 years of Python” as himself.
Maybe they meant Blackadder.
He was probably one of those people making comments ABOUT Monty Python ‘They inspired/opened doors/were direct competition for me’ in between commentary about skits… or the like… he was in blackadder… Fry and Laurie… etc. but not (afaik) IN the Python troop. And considering all the goofy stuff he did in Fry and Laurie and in Blackadder- an American accent is probably low on the list of ‘silly’ things he has done and keeping it accurate- high on the difficulty scale.
apropos of nothing… HE IS HOT HOT HOT!!!! WOOT~
I think Hugh Laurie also has a lisp…
If you get rid of 13, then you can do whatever accent you want.
“If you get rid of 13, then you can do whatever accent you want.”
If I were him, I’d rather get rid of my accent and do 13.
shes the new prettiest one
i only like her face
I think Jennifer Morrison is still prettier, although she’s gotten really thin and looks like crap as a blonde.
Yes, her hair now makes me cry. It also scares small children.
As an American, there is absolutely nothing wrong with Hugh Laurie’s accent. This LOL is not LOL-worthy.
Speaking of bad accents, I’ve got four words that will make you cringe more than Mel Gibson’s attempt at a Scottish accent.
Kevin Coster, Robin Hood. *shudder*
*cringe* Did you know they use Costner’s accent from that movie as torture at Guantanamo Bay?
Agreed, although being Scottish, Mr Gibson is more cringeworthy to me.
Ditto here.
*Gets whiplash from cringing too much*
Am I the only one who doesn’t interpret this caption as making fun of his attempt at an American accent?
I thought the caption was meant to say that Laurie CAN do the accent, but doesn’t want to. I think it’s pretty universally agreed that he’s good at it. Producer Bryan Singer thought that Laurie WAS American when he first considered him for the part.
Oh, and I second any statements about him being hot; both the actor and the character. God I hate cynical, semi-evil, middle-aged scruffy men in real life, but I have such a love for them on TV for some reason
It’s the limp
It’s the TV.
It’s the hot.
eyes. they pierce me
Oh yes. His eyes are amazing.
YES! Please…
Hugh does a brilliant American accent. If I hadn’t already known he was a Brit (Jeeves & Wooster, watch it already) (Fry/Laurie OTP), I wouldn’t have known.
You want bad American accents? Watch Doctor Who. Every “American” on the show, save for John Barrowman, does an absolutely abysmal job of the accent. And Barrowman was raised in Illinois, though he was born in Scotland and now lives in Wales, so he doesn’t really have to fake it.
I like that he doesn’t use it when he’s not “on.” Such a classy dude. Insanely funny also; you don’t get to be friends with Stephen Fry if you’re not.
yeah, so preposterous that most of America didn’t realize he wasn’t American until they heard him speaking in his regular accent.
Makes me think of the episode where he continuously phones another doctor at night and at one point uses his actual British voice. I had a friend tell me that he does a crappy english accent and I burst out laughing at him.
Actually, he was doing a purposely crappy English accent for that. Kinda the way James Marsters once “faked” a bad American accent on BtVS. That kind of thing? Never not funny!
english, american, whatever… i love him & the show House… <3 <3 <3
“Sir, I have a cunning plan.”
“How cunning is it?”
“It’s so cunning, you could stick a tail on it and call it a weasel.”
Anyone? Anyone?
Also, for the clueless people, don’t you think he would be a LITTLE young to be in the original Python crew?
Hugh Laurie does an excellent American accent, but occasionally I can tell when he’s trying just a little too hard. The inflections are flat, and the consonants are too harsh.
I love his “real” voice.
I’m pretty sure Mr. Laurie would say “may I,” not “can I.”
I love, love, LOVE Hugh Laurie, but couldn’t get through the first episode of House because of the accent. It’s just wrong. Not bad, just RONG.
And yes, everyone should be MADE to watch ‘A Bit of Fry and Laurie’. Excellent stuff.
Soupytwist!
*geeks* Preposterous.
Not going to bother try and read through all of the comments to see if someone’s already fixed this or not.
Er, just re-read it. Never mind. *slinks back to rock*
Hugh’s American accent is a hell of a lot more believeable than Christian Bale’s fake British accent. At least Hugh only does his on a made-up TV show and doesn’t try to pass it off as “real”.
