In actual fact most American psychiatrists don,t believe this exists out side of film and TV. I personally have only came across one person in England and i wasn’t that convinced.

Erm, I think you will find that people in those categories DO complain when jokes are made about them. And quite rightly. If he was making jokes about a physical illness or disability like cancer, or paraplegia, do you think he’d get air time?
BTW will all of you people talking about mental illness please have the decency to read a psychology textbook? One at an introductory level should be ok.

what are you talking about “And 99% of us aren’t Psych majors (or have only taken highschool psych, in which doesn’t always keep up-to-date. some people haven’t even TAKEN psych, like me ), and did not know that things change in the Psych community.”??? Dumb ass. It never changed, schizophrenia has always been the same disorder. And just another thing, ignorance (which means lack of proper information in case you did not know) is no excuse for misusing terms.

Jeff Dunham is a very talented comedian. I don’t know very much about the mental illness stuff, but I think he is just trying to make people’s day brighter with some laughter. Laughter is the best medicine in some cases. Although i agree with some of you, i don’t much like this caption either.

so am i. people have no clue, and the stigma is horrible. i can’t tell you how many people i’ve met who just don’t get it. since i was diagnosed in 98 i’ve encountered some people with some pretty wild ideas.. i.e. “if i got off my meds i’d have a closer walk with God” telling someone with an MI to get off their meds is one of the worst things anyone could do.
i’d like to talk more with you, and i hope your mom is doing okay.

I hope all you people complaining about jokes and mental illness think the same thing when comedians make jokes about gays, race (which btw are even funny to the people they are aimed at most of the time) and religion. Most generalisations about these groups are incorrect but you don’t see them complaining. I do get that schizophrenia is isn’t the same as whatever its called now. So don’t start going off at me about that.

Schyzophrenia has NEVER been split personality so nothing has changed on that part. And I am not a psych major and my school did not even provide anything that had anything to do with psych and I knew that. Ignorance is not an excuse buddy.

Schizophrenia is paranoia, hallucinations, bizarre delusions or disorganised speech and thinking (and hearing voices telling you what to do etc.)
These people usually also have extreme depressions and anxiety disorders.
About 40% go on drugs and they have a shorter life expectancy of at least 12 because of the high suicide rate.

I’m in the field and both terms are used except diagnostically, though dissociative identity disorder is considered more proper and even more “PC”.
