actually i dont see much of a difference, its a computer age and all things are altered to look great using computers, even male celebrities are also photoshoped to look nice, I moved in a new neighborhood, i was searching for property to let in central london for quite some time and i accidentally found this amazing website no agents 24 with loads and loads of information about tips for tenants, tips for moving, hips. I really like my new house. i went out for some fresh air today early morning, although i am generally not the morning person type but i have to admit i really enjoyed it.

“damages to the mentality of our young children.” you know, i grew up with all thi stuff around me too, and you know what? i feel great about my less than “perfect” body because i learned better from my mom. if you cant teach your child to feel good about themselves regardless of the media, you fail as a parent. same thing with “teaching homosexual marriage” equalling teaching that gay sex is ok. if you dont agree with it, teach your child better. because in their formative years, who do they look up to the most? sure, my idol as a kid was Jareth, but when i needed a good female model to follow, it wasnt brittney spears or paris hilton. it was my mom. and i’m the confident sexy gal i am today because of her! not beceause of the media. so take your “oh the media is influencing my kids and i cant do anything about it!!” crap and take a parenting class.

oh, and video game violence? only makes kids who are ALREADY VIOLENT more aggressive. read the studies, if you can find ones that have an actual control group (theres like, 3)

Wow, you’re kind of scary. Not all of we women are born wanting to feel ugly or are jealous of better looking women. There are a helluva lot of us who are completely comfortable in our less-than-perfect skins and can appreciate other people’s beauty (both men’s and women’s) without feeling inadequate. You just don’t know about us because we’re quiet. We’re happy with how we look so we’re not whining and complaining to the world about our appearance.

Very true point. I can see many different views on this issue, and I decided to post this one. I actually find this subject fascinating because we, as humans, have always created an ideal image. This, however, is visibly more of a ‘problem’ because of the mass media and communication that spreads it. People are bombarded by so many images (good, bad, photoshoped, and natural), that eventually we start to ignore them…which only makes it sink in deeper.

I know for me personally, I use photoshop to touch up pictures quite often. Whether it be a portrait of a person, or a macro shot of a honeybee, I will use photoshop the same. For me, I use it to make the world see what I see. When I see people I love, I don’t see their imperfections…their blemishes, scars, acne, large pores, or oily skin. I create the image on the computer to match the image I’ve created of them in my mind. I suppose it could be similar to what happens when a kid gets their high school senior pictures done.

As said below, I agree with the comments on parents needing to be there for their kids. However, many times in today’s world the parents get caught up in it too. I know my mother was always telling me to go put makeup on, to fix up my hair, or to wear a nicer shirt (yes, I am a girl). I suppose I am the rare person who grew up NOT wanting to be like the pictures in the magazines, and the people on TV. I didn’t like the attention that was associated with looking *that* good.

But with parenting, they can only do so much. For example, no matter how much you preach ‘no sex before marriage’, your kid still has just as likely as a chance of having sex.

I agree entirely, on both the statement that the media is not some force of evil that suddenly makes people feel like fat ugly slobs(regardless if they are or are not) and that an ‘LOL picture’ isn’t the place to describe it.

It’s important to take every picture here with a grain of salt and for everyone to stop taking it so damn seriously.

It seems to me that if women are so determined to feel ugly there’s not a lot the media can do about it. There are, in fact, real and dramatic differences in attractiveness among real people. That’s not something the media created, and it’s pretty ridiculous to believe that it is. But physical appearance isn’t the only kind of difference between people, and it’s not the only element of attractiveness. There are plenty of physically unattractive men and women out there who are loved and respected. We don’t have to pretend that physical attractiveness is a weird artificial creation of the media.

I know, questioning the old “the media make us care about appearance” story on a site about celebrities is a sure-fire way to attract angry, desperate responses. But maybe folks could try to see past celebrity just once, hey? Celebrities just aren’t all that special, folks. You don’t have to believe everything the celebrity culture is selling you. There’s a whole real world out here.

Hopefully is right. I have two daughters. I do everything I can to point these things out and keep their self-esteem up and still my youngest (when only 8) said she was ugly and shouldn’t live. She’s ten now and better but with a lot of people judging, and what the teenagers can be like, I don’t know how long it will last and it’s scary. My daughter is beautiful (enough that teenage boys have commented on it, not rudely or anything but she definitely gets noticed) but she still feels ugly and will sometimes wear three layers of clothing and try to hide. I’m not saying it’s entirely the medias fault but how they present women doesn’t help. You know what she said? ” Don’t worry, mom. I don’t want to look like Paris Hilton. She’ll die some day. But look at all these beautiful women……I just don’t want to look like me anymore. Why can’t I be them?” What can I do? Well, I’m her mom and she and her sister are my world so she’s on a waiting list for therapy.

I do agree that it’s partially parental responsibility to teach their children about self-confidence. However, pictures and the way that the media perpetuates the so-called “ideal” man or woman also can do great psychological damage, particularly to young girls. It isn’t the picture, or photoshop, or whatever you necessarily want to say. It’s the way that the world says, “Hey, this is what is beautiful. If you don’t look like this, you aren’t beautiful.” There are some young girls who lack just enough self-confidence to believe it. Yes, that’s where it goes back to the parents. But it’s also the fault of the media for portraying women like this.

It is still not the fault of the picture, the person, or the program.

If children are taking these images to heart because they do not realize it is enhanced, it is the job of their parents to make them realize its enhanced.

We blame magazines, we blame photoshop, hell we even blame cartoons… but god forbid we blame ourselves for teaching our own damn children the vaule of self confidence.

It sells because of people like you who disregard it’s damages to the mentallity of our young children who look at these enhanced photos and don’t realize that they are enhanced, since they’re children. Then they take that idea into their heads and perpetuate the issue by believing that there are people who look like that naturally and it’s not until the damage is done that later in life they learn the truth. Often, these once impressionable children grow up to work at magazines where they enhance photographs to unrealistic proportions and the cycle continues. Until you step up and say, “This is wrong”, it’s simply going to continue. You seem to be a very intelligent person. Perhaps you could put that towards creating a better world for future generations by realizing that by saying “it sells” your simply contributing to the issue and not the solution.
