Hell yes he did. You’re talking about a man who killed himself for the craft of acting. In fact, if he did have a fault, it was making Christian Bale look like a schmuck.
It’s still hard to believe that that is actually Heath Ledger playing the Joker. He’s unrecognizable. If you make Jack Nicholson look like a joke, then you’ve earned your damn award, alive or dead.

The drugs were prescription; it was a bad medication interaction, not an OD. Pay attention next time.
It doesn’t matter how he died. I also don’t believe that he got the award because of pity. In my opinion he totally owned that movie! He did an amazing job and deserved it.

I think the Academy was righting the wrong of not awarding him the Oscar for Brokeback Mountain. This was their last chance – deserved, but last chance.

I have to disagree.
Upon hearing of Ledger’s death, my first thought, as bad as this sounds, was whether they had finished filming yet. Look at the amazing variance in the the role of the joker as compared to his previous movies (Knight’s Tale, Brokeback Mountain). His ability to change his persona in such a drastic manner speaks volumes about his acting ability, and definitely provides reason for the fact that if you search “Heath Ledger” on IMDB, the four photos they use for previews of the picture slide show are of The Joker.
However most telling is the fact that Ledger reminded me of what Jerry Robinson, Bill Finger, and Bob Kane must have been thinking when they thought up this villain… While Nicholson is one of my favorite actors… I have to say he did not quite do it for me.
He totally stole that movie but it wasnt hard since Bale sucked ass with that awful voice he used.
Yeah, he needs to sound more like Adam West.

Watch Marion Cotillard in “La Vie en Rose” and you’ll realize that, while incredible and Oscar-worthy, Heath Ledger isn’t the only actor who can do a great performance.
Poor Mickey Rourke…it’s a sad day when a sarcastic, badly dressed Irish dude can’t get his fifteen minutes. Yes, I can’t stand the actor but he was brilliant in his movies.

I’m not just saying that, either. The whole thing would’ve been average, overlong and convoluted without Ledger’s Joker character keeping us fascinated.

I didn’t know he died until after the movie. I watched it in theaters and was blown away.
His acting was so subtle. The way he quietly struggled and disagreed with the guy accusing him he was crazy in his first appearence made me LOL.
IT seems some people here watched the movie and decided it was bad because he died.
I bet if he was alive you would agree with the award. and rip on those who disagree with the movie.
