Though I agree with you, lets just say she’s just one of those people who can sing without the benefit of editing that almost everything you hear on the radio has. (I do not enjoy live performances because most of everything that wasn’t made before editing sucks)

Yeah, but bear in mind that we usually see celebrities after they’ve started rising to fame and have professional services to make them look good.

Though they may now run with her looks because of the selling point it’s turned into, if she’d been discovered BEFORE we saw her on a public broadcast she would undoubtedly have been done up to be less “visually offensive” – If that’s how you feel she is.

Right.. Let’s summarize:
Susan Boyle looks frumpy and simple. We did not expect her to be any good. We snickered at her. She sang beautifully and blew us all away. Now we feel guilty for having judged her wrong.
Yes, we did not believe in her.. Yes,she sings very well.. Yes, we oughta cheer for her..

But geez.. This has gone way too far, to the point of idolization.. One thing I know for sure.. The makers of BGT sure are making the best out of the situation.. Nothing like a little bit of good publicity to boost ratings, eh?

She has more guts than I do standing in front of the baying mob, but having said that, her voice is good except the lower register which is is poor. Can’t say I like all of the hype and the mock surprise of the two w**kers Ant n Dec. Just what is their purpose?

I agree that musical theatre would be the best outlet for Ms. Boyle’s talent; her voice is certainly powerful enough.

The thing about not-so-attractive musicians/performers of the past is that appearance has become more and more important in the entertainment industry, especially since the advent of music videos, and there is much less opportunity for such performers in today’s culture. Would Loretta Lynn, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, etc. have become such big stars in today’s climate? Certainly, the Susan Boyle BGT segment was edited for affect, but the reminder is nevertheless valid; we’d all do better to look beyond the surface and start supporting substance.

The other thing I’m noticing about this hooplah is that the media is already itching to tear down this media darling; there have been brief toe-tips in the water to see if the public is ready yet to hear any mean-spirited gossip that can be dug up.

One thing nobody thinks about is that they had a full day or more of audience smirks and eyerolls to dig through and choose from. I’m only surprised they didn’t grab a couple more.

Another tactic is the music they used. When she was being introduced by the voiceover backstage, the BG music they chose was the goofy music that implies “this is going to be the funny one that makes you cringe and hide your face”. In contrast, the BG music after she was done was a particularly soaring instrumental version of “I dreamed a dream”, and it had the intended effect of making everyone’s heart’s swell with whatever. Nicely done.

That said, I agree, she didn’t really need the help. But even good products need good packaging.
