    0.o there married?!?!?!

    • hee hee says:

they are not ‘married’… they are best friends… When I was a kid, I actually thought they were two orphans (the early surroundings for them were pretty gray and gloomy and they never mentioned a ‘mom and dad’) or two friends having a sleepover. Later, I thought they were brothers (and NO they don’t look alike- but then again I know a lot of siblings who don’t look much alike- or they were adopted). But whatever they may be, they are just young children- too young to for ‘sexual orientation/awareness’- and always will be.

      • parksj1 says:

In denial? Don’t be a homophobe. Bert and Ernie were a thinly veiled attempt at promoting same sex relationships. And don’t be naive enough to think that children’s shows avoid sexual nuance. Ever watched Sponge Bob? Or any Disney movie? The creators of these shows are adults. Children would never assume that Bert and Ernie are gay, but that doesn’t mean the implication isn’t there (for adult minds).

Think of it this way: if next door you had two guys who had lived together for 30 years and never had external heterosexual relationships, what would you assume about them? If the answer is “nothing,” you are a liar. :-)

        • Gustav says:

Uhm… your tinfoil hat is too tight.

There are no homosexual implications with Bert and Ernie, you are just looking for them. I suppose you thought the purple teletubby was gay too.

And your argument about two men living together for 30 years doesn’t hold water. This is a TV show. If a family lived next door and didn’t age for 20 years (the Simpsons), I’d think something was up too, but like Sesame Street, the Simpsons don’t follow a real timeline.

Bert and Ernie are friends. End of story.

        • wvgirl says:

          “for adult minds”?
So, if this is a children’s show, why would they put something in there geared toward adult minds? And I’m with Gustav, sure they’ve lived together for so long, but they haven’t aged at all in 40 years. So yeah, if I had two men as neighbors who lived together for 40 years and never changed, I’d be asking questions, but not about their sexuality. Fail.

          • MLD says:

Oh yes, because kids are the only ones that ever watch kids shows.

            • wvgirl says:

Not the point. Again, what I said was, why would they put something for adults in a kid’s show? I mean, I always watched Sesame Street for the innuendo.

              • Iduna says:

Actually I would agree with MLD because watching shows for kids is just…. extremely boring. BUT, Ernie and Bert (or Erling & Bernt as they’re called where I come from) is actually very funny. I still enjoy watching it.

              • Actually, some cartoons do do that. Kid’s shows. I can’t remember, but I think I’ve seen some on Fairly Odd Parents or Power Puff Girls.

                • It was Power Puff Girls! They met this girl named Robin and she was over at their house and she was talking to the Professor and he was talking about how he accidentally made them and the little girl was like, “It’s okay, my parents said I was a mistake, too.” And he just has this look on his face…

              • Sarah says:

It’s common knowledge that this is done ALL THE TIME.

Production companies know that if you include something for the adults to get a kick out of, the parents are more likely to approve of the show, and thus buy videos and merchandise for their children.

                • wvgirl says:

Ok. I’m aware of that. Spongebob, Fairly Oddparents, Shrek, the list goes on and on. I’m talking about Sesame Street. I’m sure, back in the day, when SS was created, they said, “Hey, let’s put something in here for adults! Hmm. . . Oh, I know! Let’s make Bert and Ernie gay, I’m sure the grown ups will get a big kick out of that!” All I’m saying is, I highly doubt it was done then. On this show. I know they do it on other shows.

          • BreenLolz says:

Well, I think in tht case they’d be two gay vampires.

        • hee hee says:

the 5 and 7 year old boys that live next door? YEEEEAAAH…they are ‘in the life’. You see, all children grow out of Sesame Street after a few years, so B & E are always the same age- without sexual connotations. (Big Bird ages about 6 months every 10 years or so.) I stand by my statement that they are brothers or best friends. Sure these things are made by grown-ups, but THESE grown-ups are making educational TV for preschoolers on PBS, not ‘hip’ + ‘heavily subtext-ed’ commercialized stuff for the mass market like Disney and the sponge-bob group. Not everyone is trying to have a ‘little something’ for the adults in their programming. The PBS people are not into ‘subtext’. It is strictly for preschooler set- simple, clear, and easy to understand. They want to make TV that doesn’t cause the children to go running to mommy with ‘what did they mean by *insert inappropriate subtext here*, Mommy?’

        • Terri says:

sounds like you might have some issues that need to be dealt with

        • Sarah says:

Just because she doesn’t think they’re gay doesn’t make her a homophobe.

Bert, at least, has indicated that he likes females (he sang about his girlfriend once) so he could be either bisexual or straight, if it really matters that much (which, in my opinion, it doesn’t.)

She’s wrong in saying that they’re “young children” though, as while the show is aimed at young kids, it seems unlikely that two youngsters would be allowed to live alone in an apartment together.

        • Torr says:

I agree. Bert and Ernie were gay, end of story. There was a report recently that pointed it out. Sesame Street did a lot for bringing minority groups into the spotlight in a positive way. Heck, they were the first children’s show to have black people on it and one of the first to mix races in an environment void of stereotypes or off color humor.

      • Roto13 says:

How many “young children” do you know with unibrows?

      • slythwolf says:

I’m fairly sure they’re supposed to be brothers, actually.

  2. Harley says:

Okay am I the only one who knows that Bert and Ernie are just best friends and Straight room mates.

    • Kroenen says:

hey, I know of some people who think that Batman and Robin are a gay couple. Tell me, which one seems more ludicrous?

      • puppatoons says:

People are always hoping John Lennon and Paul McCartney had a gay relationship, too. *sigh*It’s tough to be a fan of something with two male friends in it these days.

        • bix902 says:

oh goodness I know exactly what you mean!
It’s annoying that you can’t have two same sex friends without people automatically assuming that they’re gay, and then getting upset if they deny that they are homosexual

  3. Harley says:

    no disrespect meant by that.

  4. Aaron says:

Thanks for ruining my childhood. I have it on good authority that they slept on separate, twin-sized beds.

    • sniffle says:

and that is why they are HAPPILY married

    • Morgana says:

so did Ricky and Lucy ;)

      • Aoife says:

        And Rob and Laura …

        • hee hee says:

Yes, thanks to 1950′s sensibilities of the censors. People who were not ACTUALLY married in real life (which is why the Nelson’s were allowed to have one large bed) were not allowed to appear to sleep in the same bed on TV, they also had to have at LEAST one foot on the floor at all times when sitting on the bed.

        • HP says:

dont forget that the two ronnies from england even had the same bed didnt make them gay jsut realy funny

          • Vila Restal says:

WRONG!!! FAIL!!! It was Morcambe (apologies if the spelling is wrong!!) and Wise who did that. And to be really pedantic it’s Britain not England.

            • HP says:

your right your right i knew that why did i say two ronnies ? o well same point

England and Britain are the same place hunny i should know i live there !(ok so Britian is short for great Britan and that inc all the other bits ) they still come from where i am (im shutting up now i need sleep

            • Sarah says:

The two are interchangeable here. They are both English. You could say either “Britain” or “England” and you’d be right in both cases.

  5. Harley says:

robin was only created because at the time it was a fade for superheros in comics to have a child sidekick to make the kids reading em feel like they could be a part of the story.

    • Zoreta says:

Yeah, but there are dozens of times when Batman spanked Robin at various ages. Plus, some things that are just odd…

“Remember this leather thong, Batman? It still has your teethmarks in it!”

      “Hurt?”
“Well when you grab it like that, yeah.”

  6. The Meek says:

Bert reminds me of Squidward, and Ernie reminds me of SpongeBob.

Ernie: Hey Bert, mind if I borrow a little bit of eyebrow?

    • LurkinMerkin says:

      *snip*
Oops, now you look uneven, I’ll just straighten that out…
      *snip*
Oh wait! Bert, ol’ buddy ol’ pal, now there’s more in the middle than on the ends, gotta fix it…
      *snipsnipsnip*
      There! All even!
ERNIE, I HAVE NO EYEBROWS AT ALL!!!!
Yeah, Bert, you look great! just like a bowling pin! Hchchchchchchch!

  7. IvanTheMildlyAnnoying says:

It’s great to see a Hollywood marriage really make it!

  8. umcc says:

    …..IN SIN!

  9. Squiggly says:

With all the Jonas Brothers captions on this site I figured I’d bring this lovely clip here.

Also there’s a really annoying “Which Jonas Brother Will You Marry?” banner above my comment box right now.

  10. PeachyKat says:

From the ‘Simpsons’ episode, “Blame It on Lisa”

Marge and Bart watch a (sexy) Brazilian kiddie show.

Marge: at least Bert and Ernie left it to your imagination!

  11. DarkHawke says:

Gots to start voting more…too much crap hitting the main page.

    • AC says:

I think my “fail” and “win” buttons have been switched round…. Honestly, I keep failing a long row of lols and then see them two hours later on upcoming….

  12. i_am_#1 says:

They weren’t living in sin and they weren’t guy you idiots! They were best friends and ROOMATES. Are you telling me you never had college roomates?

  13. markus9134 says:

who cares for marriage… did they had enough cheeseburgers?

  14. ..the first gay couple that I saw.

  15. Funkibut says:

Bert and Ernie were OBVIOUSLY brothers. Any one who spent any time observing their dynamic would say so IF they were male and had a brother.

  16. Char says:

They are NOT gay!! THats not even close to funny!

  17. Clemson says:

Some of you people need to lay off the caffeine. It is just a caption to make you “LOL” – not a far reaching political statement about sexual orientation. As I understand it, that is the point of this site – to make people laugh about silly captions. Maybe I misunderstood, I will take all captions literally and seriously from this point forward.

    • pixie says:

umm actually I think it IS, I don’t think it’s supposed to be ironic, it’s a stupid statement about gay marriage because that’s what’s all over the news right now. I’m all for gay marriage – everyone has the right to be miserable! – but the preachy LOL captions are obnoxious and do not warrant LOL’s, they warrant a major eye rolling. This one isn’t funny, it’s stupid. And in fact, I think it promotes homophobia, because it instills the fear in men that if you have one good buddy that happens to be a male, it makes you gay. Sort of defeats the purpose.

      • Clemson says:

Pixie, I am only saying this because I care….there are many decaffeinated brands on the market that are just as tasty as the real thing. Lighten up and laugh. You know what’s really strange? I am not pro-gay marriage and I thought the caption was hilarious.

    • squirrel says:

and yet it failed. its not funny at all.

  18. ANDREW says:

    THEY ARE BROTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. LaughingAllTheWay says:

If one of them was female, then people would say that they were married, so to me that says that they are suppose to be a couple.

No one is saying that you are a homosexual just because you happened to like Bert and Ernie.

    • Gustav says:

So what? I know lots of straight men that people say act like a married couple. Your logic is faulty.

Good logic would be there’s no reason to say they are gay because there is no evidence of them being gay and the writers never claimed they were gay.

Nobody ever claimed people would think we were homosexual if we think Bert and Ernie are. And to you, nobody will think you are a homophobe if you think they are straight.

      • Lucy says:

Nobody claimed Bert and Ernie were heterosexual, either. Why is it always “heterosexual until proven otherwise?” Not that I give a damn over the sexual orientation of puppets. It’s a joke, take it with a grain of salt.

        • Crono says:

Because homosexuals only make up about 10% of the human population. Therefore, it is statistically safe to assume “heterosexual until proven otherwise”.

          • Rina says:

Maybe homosexuals who are out of the closet make up 10% of the human population, but I bet the real number of homosexual and bisexual is quite a bit higher, they just deny it or ignore it hoping it will go away.

        • squirrel says:

a very poor attempt at a joke. its not even funny

  20. chrisp says:

everyone needs to take a chill pill and relaxxxxx. it is a long standing joke that bert and ernie were a gay couple, this joke has been made by several different shows. and i reckon tinky winky is at least metrosexual or a transvestite after all he does carry a purse ;P

  21. deadinfrancee says:

They were cute and roomies when I was just a kid and that is what they will always be to me. I maybe older but why ruin a good memory?

  22. lanalang says:

Okay. Really people. someone just wrote it to be funny. it doesn’t mean that they are married. it just means that someone was trying to be silly. thats all these are. don’t take them seriously.
on a lighter note. it’s good to see a marriage actually last these days.

    • Clemson says:

Amen. See my post above that agrees with you completely. It was a funny caption – which I believe is the whole point of ROFLRAZZI!!!

    • squirrel says:

do you consider intentionally inflammatory comments to be funny? calling bert and ernie gay is deliberately trying to draw flames from the public. might as well call House gay cause of his relationship with Wilson…

  23. deadinfrancee says:

No one can ruin my memories of Bert and Ernie but me and that ain’t happening. Marriage is an outdated concept dreamed up by men and use by women for revenge. Gee, I guess I am glad they are not married……

    • sally says:

I’m gonna guess you don’t have parents that are
      happy and together.
      Must mean it’s impossible.
      Yeah.

      *rolls eyes like teenager*

  24. puppatoons says:

Having met and known Jim Henson, I know he’d be rolling his eyes and laughing about all this. He would have had a sense of humor about it.

  25. deadinfrancee says:

Jim Henson he was gay right?? LOL!

  26. deadinfrancee says:

    Sally
I was joking-like the happily married bit- my parents are dead.

  27. deadinfrancee says:

And they all lived happliy ever after married, unmarried, man and puppet alike.

  28. Ginny says:

What I understood was that Bert and Ernie were named after two charas from It’s a Wonderful Life; that they were a parody of the Odd Couple.

…was it true that they played “wedding” one day? I always heard the rumor, but never got it confirmed.

  29. 11110 says:

    THEY’RE HETEROSEXUAL LIFE PARTNERS.

  30. I forget who observed this first, but it’s been an entertainment standard rule for decades that all the great comedy teams sleep together — Reflect: Laurel & Hardy, The Three Stooges, The Marx Brothers — all drew humor from the clash of bedroom behaviour. I bring this up only because I used to laugh out loud at Bert’s attempts to sleep with Ernie bringing dancing sheep into the bedroom, etc. They’re pals, alright, and are named for the cop & cab-driver from “It’s a Wonderful Life”, but Ernie sure can annoy the living crap out of Bert!! Come to reflect on that: They may as well BE married . . .

  31. FadedLY says:

This is a very cute LOL, it made me smile, but naah, Bert and Ernie were just roomies.
    :)

  32. that one girl says:

i am really really not sure where i heard this, but i remember having a conversation with a group of people where someone remembered bert and ernie sharing a bed. it was also brought up in said conversation that in one of the more recent years of sesame street, either bert or ernie’s character was “killed off” leaving the remaining one alone.

no matter what, i commend sesame street for doing a lot to show diversity in it’s “cast” and teach acceptance, not just reluctant tolerance.

  33. The Truth says:

Unless Bert and Ernie “come out of the closet,” you really can’t make in inference, on way or the other. And honestly, who cares?

  34. K Stevenson says:

I think Bert and Ernie’s relationship is open to interpretation, as Marge Simpson suggested, its up to your imagination.

Originally Bert and Ernie may have been intended to be brothers, but it didn’t turn out that way….

In one skit Bert’s twin brother Bart comes to visit and Ernie has never seen him before (if you don’t believe me just look it up on YouTube). Also Bert has a little nephew, Brad, who is unrelated to Ernie.

Anyway… as others have said.. this is just a joke!! Not ment to be taken seriously!

Obviously its a kids show at the end of the day… and they are room mates / friends! But they could just as easily represent a gay married couple…. and if they did there’d be nothing wrong with that!

    • Loopout says:

Yeah, Bart is Bert’s identical twin but with the opposite personality! XD

Its amazing how much debate there is over the nature of Bert and Ernie’s relationship!!

Who cares?!? The caption is just a joke!! Man!! Chillout people!!

  35. Andrew says:

What the HELL is wrong with you? Ernie and Bert are brothers they are not Gay YOU RETARD!

    • Loopout says:

Bert and Ernie are just friends / room mates! Not brothers!

And the caption is just a joke!!

      • loser says:

        It’s not a joke, it’s a statement and it’s SICK and PERVERTED.

        • John says:

Would you say the same thing if Bert and Ernie were of opposite sexes and someone suggested they might represent a married couple?

For example if someone made a similar statement about Mickey and Minnie Mouse, would you consider that just as sick and perverted?

          If so, fair enough.

For the record I KNOW Bert and Ernie are NOT gay, and I wouldn’t joke that they were! But IF they were, I wouldn’t have a problem with it.

Just as I wouldn’t have a problem with Mickey and Minnie Mouse being married, or with any romantic tension hinted at between Bob the Builder and his business partner Wendy.

  36. Spectra says:

People these days try to read too much into everything…even kid shows! I mean come on…do you think the creators/directors of a show thats geared towards 2-5 year olds are going to put adult innuendos in there!? Some people need to get their mind out of the gutter…

  37. rankle says:

what bunch of homophobes, of course Bert and Ernie are gay. think about it for more than 30 seconds… the only element of perversity i can see here is the suggestion that they are not a couple. the sesame street writers are forward thinking, and socially and politically aware. the street represents a multicultural environment, sub cultures included. the idea of Bert and Ernie being a same sex couple is not based in sexual innuendo, it is, as all of sesame street is, intentionally representative of the people in your neighborhood. sesame st aims to educate children about acceptance as much as it teaches them about the alphabet. if you didn’t know a same sex couple in your neighborhood growing up, sesame st has allowed Bert and Ernie to be in your environment, operating for all intents and purposes, as a regular married couple. just like real gay couples.
fyi i am a straight woman.
    lol i say.

  38. mouse says:

Question…Why on earth are you people discussing whether or not Bert and Ernie are gay? Haven’t you ever watched the show? They are not gay. This show was made for children not for adults. Even if adults watched it, it wasn’t made for them. And as far as the 40 years thing, for them it doesn’t exist. They are outside of our real life time. It is a tv show, not real life. The show wasn’t made to be in real time, otherwise they would have aged.

  39. hannah says:

god, why cant people grow up?! its just ernie and bert, the two best friends who happen to live together. lately, everyone is just hoping for another gay relationship to make fun of. god.

  40. nadia says:

i personally like the idea of bert and ernie being a couple. i think its just swell! lol

  41. nadia says:

by the way, cant any of you take a joke? its supposed to be funny!

  42. Sarah says:

I’m pretty sure that if the creators of SS were to see this discussion, they’d find it incredibly funny. Maybe it was left up to the viewer’s interpretation to decide what relationship they had.

Little kids think it’s perfectly normal for two same-sex friends to live together platonically (when I was eight, my plan was to buy a house with my best friend Jessica.) Adults might think the relationship was more sexual, and this is a very popular viewpoint (but by no means the only possible correct one.) It doesn’t matter because there is no explicit indication either way.

  43. loser says:

I always thought they were brothers

  44. samterdude77 says:

dude, you nothing about ernie and bert. don’t touch a couple of studs just because you like gay jokes. takes one to know one, jerk.

  45. anonymous says:

They are so not married. They are best friends!! Sesame Street would not have gays on it because it’s a freaking CHILDREN’S SHOW! Jeez, idiot.

    • Smitty says:

My kids have a number of friends whose parents are gay. Showing a gay couple on Sesame Street would not be odd to them at all.

But, CTW/SW has never stated that Ernie and Bert are gay. And, romance between them was never the basis of any skit they were in. So, other than being two dudes who live together, there is no reason to think that they are gay.

  46. jessica says:

there not married and they never will be they’re brothers! If you watched this when you were little you would know that! It just annoys me!

    • Smitty says:

Ernie and Bert are not brothers. They are roommates and best friends despite/because of being complete opposites.

  47. Darklady says:

Pssst… they’re not gay, they’re not straight, they’re not brothers, they’re not best friends, they’re…..PUPPETS. They go into closets, crates or suitcases when the cameras lose that little red dot.

The guys in the costumes… who knows?

Oh, and I think the caption is funnier than hell! I know a lot of gay couples whose relationships lasted waaaaay longer than the straight couples I know.

  48. TheAuthoress says:

You know, just to throw my mind into the game, I’d actually let my kid watch the show MORE if they were gay. Because that’s one of those kindergarten skills, right? Acceptance and sharing. And not eating dirt. Oh I miss childhood.

Also, I don’t think anyone here seems to have seen Avenue Q.

“SO I MADE A LITTLE GROAN. THAT IS WHAT I DO. THAT IS WHAT PEOPLE AND PUPPETS DO ON AVENUE Q.”
    :D

  49. Kelley says:

Who gives a flip if they were gay, straight, or both into ernies rubber duckie. they teach kids important social values and that’s the important part

  50. bix902 says:

honestly who really does care about that, I mean I always assumed that they were brothers or best friends (brothers would explain how often Bert got insanely annoyed with Ernie)
But they were modeled after popular duo comedy acts of the time
Never mind the fact that Bert was often shown to be attracted to women, including serenading Connie Stevens and recording the song “I want to Hold your Ear” for his girlfriend
