Maybe homosexuals who are out of the closet make up 10% of the human population, but I bet the real number of homosexual and bisexual is quite a bit higher, they just deny it or ignore it hoping it will go away.

honestly who really does care about that, I mean I always assumed that they were brothers or best friends (brothers would explain how often Bert got insanely annoyed with Ernie)
But they were modeled after popular duo comedy acts of the time
Never mind the fact that Bert was often shown to be attracted to women, including serenading Connie Stevens and recording the song “I want to Hold your Ear” for his girlfriend

You know, just to throw my mind into the game, I’d actually let my kid watch the show MORE if they were gay. Because that’s one of those kindergarten skills, right? Acceptance and sharing. And not eating dirt. Oh I miss childhood.

My kids have a number of friends whose parents are gay. Showing a gay couple on Sesame Street would not be odd to them at all.

But, CTW/SW has never stated that Ernie and Bert are gay. And, romance between them was never the basis of any skit they were in. So, other than being two dudes who live together, there is no reason to think that they are gay.

Would you say the same thing if Bert and Ernie were of opposite sexes and someone suggested they might represent a married couple?

For example if someone made a similar statement about Mickey and Minnie Mouse, would you consider that just as sick and perverted?

If so, fair enough.

For the record I KNOW Bert and Ernie are NOT gay, and I wouldn’t joke that they were! But IF they were, I wouldn’t have a problem with it.

Just as I wouldn’t have a problem with Mickey and Minnie Mouse being married, or with any romantic tension hinted at between Bob the Builder and his business partner Wendy.

I agree. Bert and Ernie were gay, end of story. There was a report recently that pointed it out. Sesame Street did a lot for bringing minority groups into the spotlight in a positive way. Heck, they were the first children’s show to have black people on it and one of the first to mix races in an environment void of stereotypes or off color humor.

I’m sure, back in the day, when SS was created, they said, “Hey, let’s put something in here for adults! Hmm. . . Oh, I know! Production companies know that if you include something for the adults to get a kick out of, the parents are more likely to approve of the show, and thus buy videos and merchandise for their children.

Just because she doesn’t think they’re gay doesn’t make her a homophobe.

Bert, at least, has indicated that he likes females (he sang about his girlfriend once) so he could be either bisexual or straight, if it really matters that much (which, in my opinion, it doesn’t.)

She’s wrong in saying that they’re “young children” though, as while the show is aimed at young kids, it seems unlikely that two youngsters would be allowed to live alone in an apartment together.

I’m pretty sure that if the creators of SS were to see this discussion, they’d find it incredibly funny. Maybe it was left up to the viewer’s interpretation to decide what relationship they had.

Little kids think it’s perfectly normal for two same-sex friends to live together platonically (when I was eight, my plan was to buy a house with my best friend Jessica.) Adults might think the relationship was more sexual, and this is a very popular viewpoint (but by no means the only possible correct one.) It doesn’t matter because there is no explicit indication either way.

Question…Why on earth are you people discussing whether or not Bert and Ernie are gay? Haven’t you ever watched the show? They are not gay. This show was made for children not for adults. Even if adults watched it, it wasn’t made for them. And as far as the 40 years thing, for them it doesn’t exist. They are outside of our real life time. It is a tv show, not real life. The show wasn’t made to be in real time, otherwise they would have aged.

what bunch of homophobes, of course Bert and Ernie are gay. think about it for more than 30 seconds… the only element of perversity i can see here is the suggestion that they are not a couple. the sesame street writers are forward thinking, and socially and politically aware. the street represents a multicultural environment, sub cultures included. the idea of Bert and Ernie being a same sex couple is not based in sexual innuendo, it is, as all of sesame street is, intentionally representative of the people in your neighborhood. sesame st aims to educate children about acceptance as much as it teaches them about the alphabet. if you didn’t know a same sex couple in your neighborhood growing up, sesame st has allowed Bert and Ernie to be in your environment, operating for all intents and purposes, as a regular married couple. just like real gay couples.

I think Bert and Ernie’s relationship is open to interpretation, as Marge Simpson suggested, its up to your imagination.

Originally Bert and Ernie may have been intended to be brothers, but it didn’t turn out that way….

In one skit Bert’s twin brother Bart comes to visit and Ernie has never seen him before (if you don’t believe me just look it up on YouTube). Also Bert has a little nephew, Brad, who is unrelated to Ernie.

Anyway… as others have said.. this is just a joke!! Not ment to be taken seriously!

Obviously its a kids show at the end of the day… and they are room mates / friends! But they could just as easily represent a gay married couple…. and if they did there’d be nothing wrong with that!
