YES it was a great scene! And it was Harrison’s idea! They had this whole big scene worked out but everyone was sick as a dog (Dysentery or something) and he said ‘why don’t I just shoot him?’
actually, it was more of an improv bit. only Ford had “exlosive decompression of the bowels” and was in agony. this was the last take for the morning and he just decided to shoot the guy so he could get to his trailer and relieve the pressure. Spielberg liked it so mush he kept it in.
This is exactly how I heard this scene happened too; it was supposed to be a sword fight and, as dee dee dee says…
I think the story has evolved (the interview I saw was with Harrison Ford and he casually says ‘everybody’ and vaguely mentioned ‘dysentery or something’ very off the cuff- if you have ever seen him interview you know what I am talking about). But basically a variation on a theme – Harrison was sick – they had a whole scene worked out (a big sword fight) – Harrison decided to shoot him instead so they could all go home.
Well, hopefully were not all as racist as tashi80.

Seems you’re the racist, I look at it and remember reading Harrison Ford was too sick to do the sword fight that day….so they substituted the gun. It never occurred to me that it was racist…if it was a Frenchman…would you still complain? Seems your mind is the problem, not the photo.
I have no problem with Indiana Jones wishing to defend himself from anyone, regardless of race. The problem I have is that tashi80′s only possible inference is that he is doing what we all WANT to do – which is, clearly, killing arabs.
I cannot believe this requires explanation. I also cannot believe that I’d somehow be racist myself had I misinterpreted tashi80′s supposed lol – how does that work?
I think the point is that when I first watched this movie, my first thought was, “how’s he going to get out of this?”, then I remembered he had a gun and I thought “I’ll bet he doesn’t use it. Typical hollywood”. Then he does and I’m immediately thinking that this guy is crazy cool. I’m pretty sure killing arabs was not the point of this lol at all.
I believe the idea of what we all were thinking is the simple way out instead of a drawn out whip to sword fight.

I think your formula is a little flawed. I don’t really see how a grammar error, though their (teehee) annoying, has any role in deciding whether someone’s a bigot.

The comment is to be taken outside of the context of the film: tashi80 is not suggesting we all think about shooting someone who intends to “carve [us] up like turducken.” He is essentially suggesting we all think about Killing An Arab (The Cure) – that killing Arabs, in general, is thought, by all of us, to be a good thing. This projection of genocidal tendencies is clearly and unquestionably racist.
You have seriously over analysed this, i never in a million year would have took racism as the intention of this caption and reading the other comments im guessing im not alone on this. Actually, it was my first thought on seeing the caption as well. The “kill the ragheads” message seems pretty clear.

I think some people are reading far too much into this caption. BCT, did you ever stop to consider that the caption is referring to putting yourself in the character’s place and responding the way you would? Haven’t you ever watched a movie and thought “boy, I would have done that differently”? I know if I were Indy in this scene, and someone was threatening me with a sword and I had a revolver strapped to my side, I’d have done the same damn thing. People are far to quick to throw out the “racist” card at any perceived slight or insult these days. Give it a rest and just enjoy these pictures in the spirit of which they were intended.

Really? You know this how? This was a great scene in a great movie that did not pit the hero in manly hand to hand combat against the overwhelming forces before him, blah blah blah. He used the force he had on hand, namely, his gun. It was an awesome scene, and as mentioned above, what every movie goer thinks should happen but never does.

1. It is a scene completely outside of the norm for its genre. Simplicity/realism wins over typical macho nonsense.

5. Verification is not simply stating the race of the characters in the scene. It doesn’t need to be white on white violence to be bereft of racism.

in the original script they did actually have the sword fight (according to my girlfriend, the trivia buff), but Ford couldnt make it work, or was sick or something, and asked the director why Indie wouldn’t just shoot the guy, or during one of the shoots he got frustrated and pulled out the gun, they added the SFX later, and the rest is Indiana Jones.
BCT, your argument fails on so many ways. Why would this pic be about anything other then the film it’s take from. If it was only about killing arabs surely he would have used a picture of a soldiers in Iraq, some city in Iraq being bombed etc.
So by using your own logic: If the message Tashi80 wanted to send is what you claim then he would have used another picture/scene.
