Double FAIL!!

1) There are medical reasons other than preventing pregnancy for prescribing contraceptive medecines. Just ask any PHP.
2) No contraceptive other than sterilisation is 100%. “The Pill” normally comes close, but its effectiveness can be seriously degraded by low grade infections (usually self-limitting viruses).

Villy, it’s obvious you don’t have any history with the series. Like Squid, Trek has been a part of my life for decades, I’ve seen every episode and movie, met the cast members over the years as well as it’s creator. What Rodenberry wrote carries weight because it was HIS universe and HIS creation. J.J. Abrams stated on Charlie Rose that he was never into “Star Trek” but a Star Wars fan and he was looking to make a movie that appealed to everyone (the masses). It’s all about money. You don’t take liberties with the series storyline and kill off Spock’s mom and destroy Vulcan. Even though the movie stands on its own as an action movie, and the cast did justice to the roles, the story was flawed. If Villy knew what Gene based Star Trek on then he would realize that this is not some short-lived saga like Star Wars.

And, of course, some people just look _young_, anyway. I have an aunt who’s over fifty who still regularly gets carded when she tries to buy alcohol, and hit on by people younger than her son. Having hit the age where I’m starting to feel a bit insecure about it, I sometimes can’t help but be exceedingly jealous… of course, the fact that she’s always been one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen doesn’t help (she looks a lot like Ms. Ryder, actually… same coloring, huge eyes, and pale skin), either.

While I applaud your decision to keep your baby — and admire the compassion and loving heart that it took to make that decision — yours is not a normal situation, and to have a child at that age and have both mother and child turn out healthy and emotionally stable is, unfortunately, exceedingly rare. So while it’s physically possible for a person of Ms. Ryder’s age to have a grown son, it _is_ fair to say that she’s ‘not old enough’ to do so, because it’s true. She’s not old enough to have a grown son. You weren’t old enough to have a child when you did. Not because you weren’t responsible enough, or loving enough, or anything like that… but rather, because such a situation should never have been forced upon a girl the age you were, which is something upon which I think everyone can agree. As you pointed out, it sometimes _is_, but it shouldn’t be, and it’s what ‘should’ be that people are referring to when they make statements like the one that inadvertently hurt your feelings.

I hated that she got cast in this movie. That was my only casting-related gripe. I can’t watch Edward Scissorhands anymore because of her, and it was once among my favorite movies.

As for all the logic and story-related arguments going on… You do realise that this is a science fiction movie, right? That none of this actually happens? I wouldn’t worry so much over minor details like that. I mean, I never watched any of the original Star Trek series, so I don’t care as much as someone who’s been a hardcore fan, but I doubt even people that were directly involved with the original thing care this much, so why should you?

FAIL! I had a child at 14, and had never even considered contraceptives. WHY, you ask? Because I wasn’t a slut, and good girls don’t need birth control. Was raped on the way home from football practice, and kept her. She’s 8 now, and I’m 23, and I love her more than chocolate ice-cream. Don’t generalize. However, I know plenty of girls in the same school that were slutty enough to have had a few abortions before they graduated, but hey, at least they didn’t have kids, so that makes them better! /sarcasm/

I thought she did a lovely job ^_^ This re-boot should lead to some really interesting sequels, as Basara549 suggested. It wasn’t horrendously cheesy or painful to watch as many recent origin story films have been. Kudos to the writers. Please pen safely in the future, and don’t start down any slippery slopes for the sake of merchandising or kid-appeal.
