My parents were divorced when I was young also. Like many fathers, my Dad couldn’t “handle” the loss of his family. As far as your Mom is concerned, please remember that she didn’t get the chance or time when she was young to get a career going. She had you to take care of. Maybe you resent her because she doesn’t have the good job that your Dad has, but she had a liability in the work-force…sorry it say you were it. I saw my mother struggle to work and maintain credibility, but luckily she had older children who could look after the younger children while she was at work. Your Dad isn’t “perfect” and neither is your Mom. It took me many years to get over my idealization of my Dad and dreaming of the great life I would have had if my parents stayed together. It’s common to do this. As a mother now, I know that I was unfair toward my mother and I gave my father more credit than her deserved.

Actually multiple births (although in this case it likely is) aren’t an abomination. Multiple births are apparently an old offshoot from evolution, which is not strictly needed anymore (hence the reason why natural multiple births are incredibly rare.) The reasoning behind them is as follows. Way back in the mists of time the apes gave birth to multiple births, to ensure that at least one or two baby apes made it into adulthood. When the apes evolved this particular gene was dominant and remained so, mainly because of the same reasons (lots of danger, low chance of survival, getting trampled on by mammoths or dinosaurs etc.) Hence this gene remained dominant for quite some time. However as the chances of surviving more than a couple of years after birth became more and more, children with the no multiple birth gene became more and more common, and eventually today the no multiple birth gene has largely become dominant, and the multiple birth gene has become recessive (at least in Europe and North America)

This is incredibly simplified but kind of gets it across. Hopefully. (Guess who did Biology )

okay, SOME of the stuff you guys are saying is pretty pointless.
I’ve been watching this show since the beginning… i really enjoy the shows on tlc. It is sad to watch the family fall apart, but then again who isnt. And the children will be fine, just like all the rest of the children out there with divorced parents, but they aren’t having as bad of a time with all of this as you’re making it seem. The children are well hid for the most part, they have everything they want- example, the house they live in on tv is refferred to as their house, it was made specifically for them. The school they go to.. no one really cares about the media etc. and no one bothers them about it, so this isn’t exactly ruining their lives. they will live at their house with their mom, and when its jons turn he comes to the house and kate leaves for a bit. they never have to move around, and they are used to kate being away for periods of time. Also, the duggars who were being compared haven’t been on as long, and frankly they’re not half as popular as jon and kate…. because their show isn’t as entertaining etc. i know, ive never enjoyed it- point being… of course jon and kate have been offered so much money, freebies, anything they basically want because they are interesting, and they are the original large family on tv. So… they went from poor to rich very fast because of popularity… and kate worked really hard on getting their name out, and she is a multi-millionaire now, and mostly everything goes to their children. They will be on tv for some time to come! tlc won’t get rid of them, and there’s talk that jon is writing a book, which will make him about 1 million. I think its good that they are divorcing… kids need to grow up in a peaceful environment! it’s not divorces that really ruins kids… its the life they live… it sucks when youre parents argue all the time, and dont talk to eachother, aren’t peacful… This way, maybe their parents will move on and get serious with others… and they will see love for once, and that couples aren’t supposed to argue and fight 24/7.

Well, to be fair, if you’ve seen the t.v. specials before they went nuts and got their own show, Jon’s always been an ass, too. Really, I can’t stomach either of them because they both have their pissy ass-hatted moments. Kate has a tendency to cuss Jon out, while Jon gives up on taking care of the kids multiple times in favor of just walking away to do his own thing. It’s really pitiful.

I think you might have missed the overall point, which was “yay, Duggars” for remaining themselves, and “boo, Gosselins” for turning into typical reality TV stars. Anyway, not that “nut job” is a particularly flattering thing to call a person, but as you pointed out, this is the US, and the right to refer to someone as a nut job is constitutionally protected.

Because when you move away from your children , they feel abandoned.
Even if you see them every other weekend.
You’re not there for them on a day-to-day basis (=parenting).
You’re there to (maybe)buy things, and make yourself feel better (you left).
Why can’t you see that?
I see the overly-emotional, stressed out kids coming into the nurse’s office with way too many tummy aches/headaches, etc.
There are lots of emotional problems caused by kids feeling insecure about the foundation of their lives.

*but yes, if there is any abuse, gtfo. It’s EVEN MORE damaging.

You don’t mean reading comprehension. You mean psychic ability. When you write that someone can’t find quote, America, end quote on a map, you are saying that they they literally cannot find the word America on the map. That is the most common and appropriate use of quotation marks. Irony (which, by the way, isn’t particularly well-communicated via this format) is a secondary use.

Normally I don’t get all snarky on these silly sites, but when you’re calling other people “inbred cretins,” it seems to me you should be careful to dot your Is and cross your Ts.

What I want to know is: Did Jon and Kate *ever* watch their own show? They should have.

It would have been patently obvious to them that they needed counseling, a long time ago.

Or just plain WATCHING themselves would have been good counseling.

It would have been a wake-up call for their behavior, one would think.

I imagine fertility treatments (hormone treatments, in vitro, and the like) have produced quite a few multiple births; sextuplets aren’t very common, but I believe that’s what happened, here. This was in addition to the firstborn set of twins.

I honestly don’t plan on getting married any time soon. And I know I’m not having kids if I’ve only known my husband for six months. But my parents got married because of me. I was at their wedding. My mum got pregnant and gave birth to me when she was nineteen. My mum and dad got married when my mum was 20. And, I love my mum, but, honestly, there are some people who are just born to be mothers, some who aren’t perfect for it, but are good nonetheless, and then there’s my mother. She has a short temper, loves animals more than people, and never finished high school. My dad is perfect, though. He’s loving, not too over-protective, has a good job, and has another son [my half-brother] and a step-son [my step-brother, obviously]. He is a great father, he and my mother just had their many, many differences. I don’t blame them for anything, and I don’t hate my life, but I know it would be a lot easier if I had two parents who lived together.

it was in reference to several things. america was written in quotes because that’s how the united states of america was being referred to. i, of course, meant that they couldn’t find the US of A on the map. but simply wrote “america” because most of the people who can’t find it on the map are also the people who seem to believe that the country is called “america”.

i’ll stop being pedantic when you learn reading comprehension.

When people blame the country for the behavior, what they’re actually blaming is the society or social climate that makes the behavior ‘acceptable’. Yes, there are good people in the US. There are people with strong ethics, good family values, and well-aligned priorities. But as a _culture_ we fail, because our culture does make this sort of thing — both the divorce and the media circus around those poor kids, acceptable.
