MWA HA HA!
Arthur C Clarke was a radar engineer, and later Science Fiction writer, who documented his own early life story in the autobigraphy “Glide Path”. Despite this, he is probably better known for his short story “The Sentinal”, which became the basis of the film and book “2001: A Space Odyssey”, and his several volumes of short fiction.
that is great information, but what does this have to do with the Harry Potter character Prof. Umbridge, played by Imelda Staunton?
Ordinal Post rule. I’m quite pleased with this one, because I wrote it myself rather than doing a copy and paste.
Captain Nice was a comedy TV series that ran from January-May 1967 on NBC. Riding the tide of the camp superhero craze of the 1960s, the show’s premise involved police chemist Carter Nash, a mild-mannered mama’s boy who discovered a secret formula that, when taken, transformed him into Captain Nice.
Captain Nice didn’t behave much differently from Carter Nash. In fact, the good Captain ran around in a pajama-like costume sewn lovingly by his mother. Carter Nash selected the name “Captain Nice” since he already had items monogrammed “CN.” His superpowers included the ability to fly, but he was nervous about doing so as he was afraid of heights.
Carter had a girlfriend in the police department, Sgt. Candy Kane. Candy looked like the typical meter maid, but there was something about her that attracted Carter — not to mention Captain Nice.
The series was created by Buck Henry, who was a co-creator of the hit series Get Smart. The show’s premise is similar to that of CBS’s Mister Terrific, which preceded Captain Nice on Monday nights. Both series started on the same day (January 9, 1967), and ended on the same day (in May 1967).[citation needed]
Carter/Captain Nice was played by William Daniels, who later gained critical acclaim in the stage and film productions of 1776, and won several Emmy Awards as Dr. Mark Craig on the drama St. Elsewhere.
Ann Prentiss, younger sister of actress Paula and sister-in-law of actor Richard Benjamin, played Candy.
Alice Ghostley played Carter’s mother. She later won fame as neighbor Bernice on the comedy Designing Women. She also played the klutzy nanny Esmerelda on Bewitched.
Carter’s father was portrayed by one of the movies’ most prolific character actors, Byron Foulger. In a reverse of Foulger’s ubiquity and familiarity in movies, his appearances in this series generally found him hidden behind a newspaper and not making a sound.
John Winston Ono Lennon, MBE (9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was an English singer-songwriter who rose to worldwide fame as one of the founding members of The Beatles, and together with Paul McCartney formed one of the most successful songwriting partnerships of the 20th century.
Born and raised in Liverpool, Lennon became involved in the skiffle craze as a teenager, his first band, The Quarrymen, evolving into The Beatles in 1960. As the group began to undergo the disintegration that led to their break-up towards the end of that decade, Lennon launched a solo career that would span the next, punctuated by critically acclaimed albums, including John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, and iconic songs such as “Give Peace a Chance” and “Imagine”.
Lennon revealed a rebellious nature and acerbic wit in his music, his writing, on film, and in interviews, and became controversial through his work as a peace activist. He moved to New York City in 1971, where his criticism of the Vietnam War resulted in a lengthy attempt by Richard Nixon’s administration to deport him, while his songs were adapted as anthems by the anti-war movement. Disengaging himself from the music business in 1975 to devote time to his family, Lennon reemerged in 1980 with a comeback album, Double Fantasy, but was murdered three weeks after its release.
Lennon’s solo album sales in the United States alone stand at 14 million units,[1] and as performer, writer, or co-writer he is responsible for 27 number one singles on the US Hot 100 chart.a In 2002, a BBC poll on the 100 Greatest Britons voted him eighth, and in 2008 Rolling Stone ranked him the fifth greatest singer of all time. He was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
I love the books and I always hated her more than any other character. She always seemed more evil than Voldemort. Umbridge is fantastic and for a writer to be able to produce such loathing is brilliant. Other writers create loathing accidentally, by ruining horror creatures for example. They should be made to write their next books with Umbridge’s magic quill to learn how to actually write.
True that.
I always hated Cho Chang also. I’d love nothing more than to punch her in the face.
She’s from Greenock, man. She’d punch you right back.
Ouch, I dated a couple of girls from Greenock (at different times of course), so I agree. I wouldn’t want to piss her off!
I really disliked this character SO much! She’s like that smug teacher who hates you and has that group of teacher’s pets that you hate. In fact, I actually liked Snape more.
Everybody loves Snape.
I love Snape so much I could eat him. He’s my favourite.
Have you SEEN how fluffy his hair is in the new film?! I just couldn’t get over it! He looks so pretty ^_^
*looks around*
Uhh… guys?
My take on Umbridge is she was a Muggle who tried to hide her heritage, even managing to convince the Sorting Hat to place her in Slytherin despite Salazar Slytherin’s desire to only educate the pure bloods (but the hat would accept half-bloods, too). Also, we never saw her forearms, so even though it was never stated, I would be willing to bet she was actually a Death Eater planted in the Ministry during the First Wizarding War who was probably not known to most of the other Death Eaters, with the possible exception to the ones who died. Her extreme venom against muggle-borns could be similar to Hitler’s hatred of Jews as a way to mask his own ancestry.
i hate her but i love the 5th book. UNLIKE the 2nd book with gilderoy lockhart. i feckin HATED that book all because of that character. In a way Umbrige knows her own evil, but Lockhart is so unequivically smug and self absorbed that I hate him the most of any character in her books.
I’d pretty much agree. In fact my reaction to the second film was that there should have been a warning about Kenneth Brannagh’s acting in that role!
God, she’s why I HATED that film, facist lady-dog!
Really ruined it for me. >:(
If you read the book, she’s MORE evil, possibly.
Umbridge’s character MADE the fifth book (and movie) because she was so evil, but she was on the “right side” of the fight. It was contradictory.
Lawful Evil
Viva la Neverwinter nights!!
umbridge is freakin evil. gah! i wonder what it was like to act out such an evil part. must’ve scarred her for life
actually, evil characters are fun to act out.
i thought her role was a little over-powering in the movie to.
Bad guy versus good guy theme.
I believed devil wore Prada, not pink…
The devil wears prada, true evil wears pink ^_~
Might be compatible, therefore both, too.
Hem Hem!
Eek! *sends in the centaurs*
“She shows signs of life when you do this. Click clop, click clop.”
But what about Victoria’s Secret pink? Is that evil, too?
Oh God. That gave me horrible, HORRIBLE, mental images.
what…
*sudden realization*
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!
Hem Hem! I understand where you all are coming from but you need to keep in mind that she was created to be an opposite of Harry which in essence does make it a good vs evil scenario. Umbridge was a large part of the book and to be honest they took out some really funny hate Umbridge parts from the movie. She did a really good job though I wish they had someone who looked more like a toad.
Just finished this book to get ready for the new movie in July. Just started HBP.
Haha I concur with the more toad-like part.
They constantly reminded you in the book that she was toad-like.
And who they choose is honestly, not remotely toad-like at all.
I cannot wait for Half Blood Prince to come out,it’s going to be spectacular =]
You’re only on the fifth?!
Read, Pickle, READ!!
ummmm who is she?
She is Imelda Staunton, here playing the character of Dolores Umbridge in the movie adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”
Clues in the picture captioning, and other comments, if peepers had bothered to actually read them.
What is this “reading” thing you speak of?
Only in the comments. I tried to figure out who it was by the caption and failed, even though I had read the book. I just haven’t seen the movie.
Too true! You should see my best friend Claire, who will be evil dictator of the wo- oops! I’ve said too much…
correction – pink houndstooth check. Regular houndstooth is the common property of standard evil. And restaurant kitchen employees.
Hem hem! Man, I had a HR manager like this once. Evil woman, the scourge of our office. She even LOOKED like her! I kept envisioning this beast while I was reading the book and it just made me loathe her even more. I thought the casting for the movie was spot on. Made my skin crawl.
oh god
I still haven’t forgiven them for not casting Dawn French in this role.
Of course, maybe part of my problem was how much they downplayed her evilness in the movie.
thats too nice just to burn her. you gotta really torture her.
……
no torture is to evil enough for her! GAH!
…Jonas Brothers…?
or twilight…?
I saw force her to watch Twilight, then make her listen to the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, then watch the Highschool Musical series, THEN have her read twilight, if she has survived all this, she will kill herself within the month
Her nose. It looks like an electrical outlet.
No Bonnet?
Anyone else think she looks like a more evil Will Ferrell?
YES!!! Totally.
May she rot in Azkaban. (Where she ultimately ended up after the 7th book)
Thank you for the spoiler, Hatsuyuki. I haven’t read the books. I prefer to wait until after the movies so I won’t have to be disappointed in the characters as so many people here are. Please post a warning before you post another spoiler. Thank you.
then i guess we shouldn’t tell you that hermione ends up having snape’s baby, harry and ron run off together to join a commune, and voldemort turns good after he accidentally drinks a reversonallity potion meant to turn harry evil?
sorry, i didn’t mean to spoil it for you.
HAH! Excellent rejoinder!!!
THAT’S TOTALY FALSE! >8O XD this is what REALLY REALLY happens…I go to the Harry Potter demension and turnback time with a time wtwisting stone. then I bring Sondra to hogwarts and she falls for Proffesor Snape! in the end, no one really dies!
I swear, i had a math teacher who acted JUST like her in 9th grade D: oh how i loathed her.
Kept wanting to scream at her while reading the book….
I had an English teacher like her in 8th grade… when I read the book, that’s who I pictured: my 8th grade English teacher |D
And they forgot the bow in the movie >:
Didn’t they also forget the Kitty picture in her office? and all the pink fluffy things?
im in 8th and even i pictured my English teacher when i read the book (yes i read it recently but its AWESOME!!)
“Give her hell from us, Peeves!”
what’s wrong with pink?
