Isn’t it, “a long, long time ago”?

Why do people abuse and neglect commas so much?

Though it’s been ages since I saw the movie (tend to not watch them re-running it on television) I did a quick online search for scripts, and according to the one I found there is only one “long”, and hence no need for a comma. This jibes with my recollection that the line is “A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…”

And I’m sure someone out there with a far larger number of functional grey cells than I posess could come up with a grand explanation of it being set long ago yet in the future and/or being a futuristic setting. You can either tell yourself that the rate of technological advancement in that galaxy is far superior to our own, or start with the fact that the distances between stars and galaxies mean that whenever we look up at the stars we’re looking into their past and build up a theory from there.

Hope my commas are in the right places…
