Okay, I made this caption so I would like to clear a few things up. I know that the saying “That’s so gay” is used as an insult. It’s a stupid insult which turns homosexuality into something that people don’t want to be associated with. The joke (remember when these captions used to be funny?) I was trying to make is that gay people as awesome as Freddie Mercury make the whole comment redunant and high-light the stupidity of those sort of remarks. Who wouldn’t want to be like Freddie? This was the reasoning behind it:

1. Freddie Mercury was gay (or bi. Let’s not quibble)
2. Freddie Mercury was amazing and cool
Therefore logically
3. Shouldn’t the term “That’s so gay” mean “That’s really cool/amazing”?

I suppose if you have to explain a joke it’s not that funny to begin with, but on the bright side at least I did write “So much cooler than the Jonas brothers will ever be” and think I was being original. Honestly I didn’t mean to cause any offence and I should have made the caption less ambigous.

Most of my friends use it in a positive way :-/
Maybe it’s because most of my friends are queer (in that loving, inclusive use of the word).

My brother uses it freely, although I’ve tried to get him to understand that it’s ignorant/rude/kind of makes him sound like a closet-case (being most outspoken against what you fear you are)… At least I’ve mostly got him trained not to use it in front of my queer friends (who are country queers, and could kick his geeky little ass).

OKay…reality check…nobody uses the phrase ‘that’s so gay’ in a positive sense. It’s an insult and it’s even an insult when used by teenagers who would get in a righteous fury if they heard an adult make a homophobic comment.
It’s simply a case of not reflecting enough on the words issuing from one’s pie-hole. I tried to explain this to my teenaged daughter when she used to say it….her best (male) friend is a gay guy and I suggested he might be a little hurt if he heard her say it…well..maybe she gets it now but in thoise days I think idiom-fashion trumped all.
