What do you mean “the music wasn’t catchy”…?… This music is extremely catchy! And as for it getting it stuck in your head? I have had Green Finch and Linnett Bird stuck in my head for a year and a half.

You seriously think Johnny has knives for hands, is a drug dealer, has infiltrated a mafia gang, been a pirate, and owned a chocolate factory? Apropos of the last of those, I’m going to say that he can sing, at least well enough to keep me happy, and I’m very critical of bad performances.

The reason the movie was tepid was due to the actor’s inability to sing. Which is too bad because they are both fantastic actors.

ITA. I loved Ravenous. And have seen three different stage productions of Sweeney Todd, including the original cast, with Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett.

The original version was staged better in my opinion. They had a set that was two stories and could be moved around and was really cool. They wore somewhat-period costumes, too. If you really want a treat, look up the 2005 concert version on Youtube. I think it has the best cast (acting and singing) and the costumes are very nice, though there isn’t any set. You get what’s going on. You get to hear all the songs in their entirety, too. In the movie they cut short/out several songs that frankly work much better on stage than they would have in a movie adaptation. You have to hear A Little Priest the whole way through, it’s a hoot!

If you get the opportunity to see Sweeney Todd, I’d suggest skipping it if it’s the revival version. They went a bit too “artsy” on it and it turns out looking lazy. Extremely minimal set, everyone wears almost the same black and white shirt and tie, actors playing their instruments on the edges of the stage, blood poured into buckets as a white lab coat is put on the victim, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I love the story, the music and the revival cast, but it’s just a pain in the neck to watch. Heh heh.

I guess darkly comedic Sondheim musicals where the protagonist isn’t the hero aren’t everybody’s cup of tea.
I can’t recommend Ravenous to you, either, if you didn’t dig Sweeney Todd.

Omar Nasiri (b.1960s) is the pseudonym of a Moroccan spy who infiltrated al-Qaeda, attending training camps in Afghanistan and passing information to the UK and French intelligence services. In his book, he claims to be deaf in his left ear due to an accident when he was younger, when he was using a cuetip to clean his ears when his brothers, who were roughhousing on a bed next to him, fell on him and drove the cuetip deep into his left ear. While this is heavily considered to be true, because his book mentions how “minor details have been edited or fabricated for protection of the author”, it is unclear if he is deaf in his left ear instead of his right, or if this ever really happened.
