It has become a popular culture cliché for the audience in many concerts to shout “Free Bird” as a request to hear the song, regardless of the performer or style of music.
This phenomenon began earlier in the 1970s with The Allman Brothers Band’s epic “Whipping Post”, but then took off to a much greater extent with “Free Bird”, very popular by 1979. This can be traced back to Skynyrd’s first live album, 1976′s One More From The Road. Skynyrd did not play the song during the main portion of the concert, or even in the encore performance. Instead they saved it for their second encore. After leaving the stage following the first encore of the concert, the crowd was riled by the apparent omission of Skynyrd’s signature song. The crowd then began chanting “Free Bird, Free Bird …”. No one left the auditorium. The band then returned to the stage for a second encore and upon taking the microphone Van Zant asked the crowd, “What song is it you wanna hear?”, which was immediately followed by several more shouts of “Free Bird”. This interaction is recorded as an intro to the song on the album, and the band responded with a 14-minute version of the song.

Oh and it doesn’t have to do with “play it again”. It’s actually a song that people request other bands to play (till this day), even though it’s a Lynyrd Skynyrd song.
It IS funny and no wonder you’re that stupid if you won’t bother to read some text to learn something new.

I’ll simplify it. At a concert, people always yell “FREEBIRD” because nor only is it an awesome song, but it’s almost 15 minutes long. So for them to actually play it would be quite taxing.
Go ask your parents. I’m sure they know.
well, after i read this, Free as a Bird by the beatles is stuck in my head.
I love you for this. I’m just young enough that I didn’t know where it originated, but old enough to have done it at many concerts. *mutters* Kids these days don’t know a gulldarned thing don’t learn nuffin in their public schools no wonder us white folks have no culture when chillens don’t even know about Free Bird…..
err im 12 and I know about freebird,the origin,and the epicness of David bowie wich has nothing to do with this pic at all….
Nice explanation!! I will refer people to this page. And, I play in a band and there are people who really want to hear Free Bird…uggh, great song IMHO but beaten to death, not to mention I played it a zillion times in my younger days. We did a version with half a verse, half a chorus and then the long solo part, which morphed into the Stairway to Heaven solo then into Purple Haze…we named it Freebyrd on Crack.
Yeah, because popular culture is the pinnacle of wisdom. That has to be it, since anyone unaware of it is ignorant, right?

Former Chicago deejay Kevin Matthews always encouraged hislisteners to yell “Freebird!”, even at comedy shows. Someone yelled it at an Elayne Boosler show (remember her?), and she didn’t understand what was being yelled. “Freeberg? You mean like Stan Freeberg?”
Stan Freberg: now there’s funny.
Ahahaha…I’ll keep this in mind for my next show…
Someone did this to Mojo Nixon once. His reply was to extend his middle finger and say “Here’s your free bird!”

It’s as if Morgan Freeman spoke, and the music was played. And Morgan saw the music, and he saw that it was good.
For decades, every bar band in the US deep south has been requested to play Free Bird. For the past 15 years or so, the request has become “Aw, man, y’all GOTTA know some Skynyrd!”

I think I’d be more surprised if there were instruments he CAN’T play.. he’s one of those people that those of us who have to struggle to learn one chord would dearly love to kill… but also dearly love to listen to.
