  1. Dave says:

That’s ignorant. Marx had many great theories on capitalism as well as communism.

    • Engels says:

Political culture fail. Sure, associate Marxism with the USSR and all the communist crap, why not. And even so, if you don’t agree with it, just ignore it? Hell, why should we learn about the 3rd Reich, all the genocides in Rwanda etc, all that stuff in school? We don’t like that, it doesn’t exist.

    • cbast1 says:

If by “great theories” you mean “rambling pseudo-philosophical nonsense”.

      • Sqwirk says:

wut? Marx was probably the greatest economist of the 19th century.

As for “rambling pseudo-philosophical nonsense”… I think you just defined the so called ‘Austrian school’ ;)

        • paws4thot says:

Oh and he wasn’t a Marxist himself. He went to great lengths to stress that his work was economic theory, a point which is often glossed over or even ignored by lecturers in Europe, never mind North America.

          • Ser says:

Depends on where in Europe, but you’re not wrong.

…and ignorance in this case makes it easy to gloss over other stuff and cram a bunch of other people in with Marx(more often than not Engels, Lenin, etc), thus simplifying his concepts and making things look nice and shiny… or at least less convoluted than real life happens to be.

    • keithybabes says:

Plus, can you imagine college teachers teaching you how to be funny? ‘Now class, I’m going to show you some “one-liners” and we will discuss their structure and relation to general principles of humour’…. oy vey!

    • Van says:

Oh hush up and enjoy the joke.

    • Xenon says:

I don’t think it’s saying that Marxism shouldn’t be taught because it’s communist; I think it’s just saying that it’d be great if we studied funny stuff instead of serious stuff.

  2. angie says:

this was when all the daftness started, thanks dudes, i bet if i got my boys to watch this they would laugh and copy this cause they would think its great to do what they did, oh the good old days

  3. forge says:

::wriststapleforehead:: Oh feh!! Colleges are teaching kids about principles of government and economic systems!! What ever shall we DO???!!!!

  4. forge says:

p.s. Imperialism is the woist thing I eva hoid ::eyeroll, eyebrow waggle, kick::

  5. If this had been put on Pundit Kitchen, it would be followed by about 200 hundred “Obama is marxist!!1!!!!1!!” comments. Hopefully that won’t happen here.

  6. faceh says:

While I agree with that the Marx brothers should be a mandatory class in every college I can’t help but notice the backhanded swipe made by this LOL. So much so that it probably belongs on Pundit Kitchen.

  7. Jim says:

I happen to agree with this LOL. If you don’t think that institutions of higher learning, at least in the U.S., promote Marxist concepts, you probaby either didn’t go to one, or didn’t pay attention. For the record if this was on Pundit Kitchen, it would be followed by ‘Obama is a socialist’ comments, but both of the conservatives that post there would be greatly outnumbered.

    • AmyCat says:

Ah… so offering classes on various political philosophies is now called “promoting Marxist concepts”?

      • Blitz says:

Yes, and the economics classes are promoting socialism. And the environmental sustainability classes are… oh wait, I guess they actually do promote sustainability. Silly me.

    • AngelaF. says:

Dunno… if US colleges taught Marxism to students, the ‘Obama’s a socialist’ cries wouldn’t exist. Or maybe it’s just that people don’t let facts get in the way of perfectly good fantasies?

      • Aryq says:

        Couldn’t agree more.

I don’t know why people think that college professors are these far-left radicals. I’m in a college that has a reputation for being very liberal and I’d say most of my professors are centrist or centre-right, and I’m not even a Business or Education major; the more conservative tracks.

The only thing I seem to hear is “Marxists/Communists/Socialists have rounded up millions into camps and killed them!”

        Ignorance is a powerful tool.

        • herb says:

Just because it’s not true doesn’t mean you can’t pretend it is.

My personal favorite is the term “Commie Czars”.

    • No1askedme says:

I go to a community college. Let me tell you, there is no such thing as this “liberal bias” in the school system. It’s all cooked up by the elitist wackos who are trying to push privatized education. Teaching an idea is not promoting it. We were all taught what the Nazis believed, does that mean they’re pushing Nazi-ism on us? Of course it doesn’t, don’t let yourself be used like this!

      • coyoteman says:

This is one of those things that used to be true but no longer is. i remember in High Scholl Sociology class where we were learning the difference between capitalism socialism communism and fascism. The instructor made it plain to us that the ideal form of government was socialism. BUT that was in 1974. A lot has changed since then. Today I doubt many would say that.

        • coyoteman says:

Dang! I need a new computer with a working keyboard!

          • Whoneedsapoliticalparty says:

Oh, well does this mean we can teach the still-somewhat-impressionable college undergrads about Scientology too? We’re not telling them to believe in it! :D

            FACEPALM

            • Serpentine says:

If said undergrads are in a unit on religion, cults, science-fiction or perhaps sociology, sure. If you’re doing a unit on politics, economics or history, then chances are Socialism, Marxism and/or Communism are gonna be relevant.

    • I went to a Catholic university (no, not a Catholic myself). No, they did NOT promote Marxist concepts, smart ass.

    • PB says:

yeah, and high schools in the US blatantly and exclusively promote laissez-faire and/or supply-side capitalist economics. What’s your point?

  8. emptyshell says:

Trivializing in-depth analysis of complex subjects that has resulted in original and unconventional (and, of course, imperfect and questionable) approaches to universal problems by flinging their names around as ad-hominem attacks?

    WHAT COULD GO WRONG? :-D

  9. Smogzilla says:

I think that is Irving Thalberg, not Zeppo

  10. Abby says:

“The world would not be in such a snarl had Marx been Groucho instead of Karl.” –Irving Berlin

  11. arimareiji says:

Kind of an odd potshot to take, considering that for the last year, the Republicans have become radical Marxists themselves.

Here’s the PROOF, if you don’t believe me, Watch five minutes of any given Fox program, and you’ll notice an uncanny similarity.

    • Alex says:

Did you live under a rock for the entire length of Bush’s Presidency, or are you just completely blind to the blatant hypocrisy of that statement?

      • arimareiji says:

Are you a five year old, or do you just consider “I’m rubber you’re glue bounces off me sticks on you” to be nuanced adult discourse?

        1) Only a willfully-blind person could pretend the Democrats in Congress did much more than “No. Oh, really? Well if you insist…” under Bush, by comparison.
        2) Regardless, my statement wasn’t “the Republicans are the only ones who have ever been guilty of this.” That wouldn’t be true, because there have been times in history when everyone does that. It was “for the last year, the Republicans have become”.

Try responding to what someone says, not what you want to be mad about.

  12. HarpOnThis says:

Right because it’s not like all of the CEOs and people leading our capitalist system went to college or anything … Oh wait — the vast, vast majority of them did! This is just a stupid remark that people who fear education because they themselves lack in intelligence make. It’s not really their fault that they absorb this fodder. They have no critical thinking skills so they are very easily manipulated by those who need their ignorant, unquestioning support.

    • forge says:

Right-wing media has been instructed to denounce and heap disrespect upon higher education because that way, the hoi polloi will avoid it and not become educated and thus not be ABLE TO THINK FOR THEMSELVES.

  13. Jim says:

Such pointless venom in all of this. Republicans think anyone who doesn’t agree is a Democrat. Democrats think anyone who doesn’t agree is a Republican. It’s all just so pointless…

    • arimareiji says:

There’s a middle ground between being spineless extreme-left and being obstinate extreme-right. If we could average the two parties out somehow, we’d be a lot better off.

‘Til then, we’re kinda getting hosed by both of them.

      • barboid says:

Agreed. Balance is the most important but often missing element in just about everything.

The Marx Bros. were funny though, I liked the caption too. Just a small note: Marxism is taught in the 10th grade now as part of many history classes, so….

        • arimareiji says:

Eiiiii, Marxism itself is being taught? If that’s literally true, it’s just plain wrong. xb

I’d have no issue with them making reference to its existence and its basic gist; history is only a useless exercise in memorization if taught without an understanding of what philosophies were influencing decisions. But if kids are being taught how to follow the principles of anyone’s belief system, whether it’s Islam or Christianity or Marxism or Pastafarianism, that needs to be stopped posthaste.

          • Vila Restal says:

Pastafarianism??? Is that carried out by Italian Reggae Singers?? Roberto Marley ed i Wailers?? Luigi Cliff?? :-)

          • Pirate says:

YARR I BE OFFENDED THAT YE DONT SUPPORT OUR BELIEFS! WE’LL RAID AND PILLAGE YER SCHOOLS FOR BOOTY!

            • Whoneedsapoliticalparty says:

Jeez people… That is extremely offensive. Where’s political correctness when you need it? It’s hyppocritical bigots like you who annoy me the most of all breeds of troll. You say “we should be tolerant of all religions,” but then you pull this out your ass? A spagetti monster? Then you insist you’re joking, but if someone were to poke fun at Atheism, it’s an atrocity!? Case in point from an Atheist friend of mine: “I don’t believe any of that religion CRAP…no offense.” In closing, BE TOLERANT. ACTUALLY TOLERANT.

              • arimareiji says:

Someone needs to pull the beam out of his own eye.

You call individuals whose behavior you find offensive “hyppocritical [sic] bigots”, “troll,” and say they “pull this out [of their] ass.” Why? Because they poke fun, not at Christianity, but at specific individuals who demand that creation be taught as if it were science in public schools.

And then you go on to specifically insinuate that all Atheists (“Case in point”) are intolerant. This, despite the fact that no one has mocked Christianity in this thread – only the individuals who call themselves Christian and try to demand that it be taught in schools.

Practice tolerance before you demand it. If you want people to be more tolerant of individuals within your religion, be tolerant of individuals outside your religion rather than trying to start a namecalling war. If you want people to respect your religion, don’t start by insulting others’ religions.

And incidentally, you need to start painting with less broad of a brush – I’m not Atheist. Odds are pretty small that you’re the Pope, so the fact that I disagree with you doesn’t give you an excuse to kick me out of Christianity.

    • No1askedme says:

Politics are pointless, it’s not like anyone actually lives up to their ideals, and laws don’t prevent crime. It’s all pointless…

  14. John says:

This is the Marxism colleges should be teaching grammar.

  15. Steve says:

Methinks some folks took this one a wee bit too seriously. I’m pretty sure it was supposed to be funny and not analyzed. Just a thought!

  16. At-salright says:

    Cultural flail.

*lays on couch, throws arms and legs around*

  17. jennifer says:

I nver knew there are so many Marx’s.

  18. uber says:

groucho zeppo chico harpo still are the funniest people in movies

this looks like it’s from duck soup or animal crackers but then again it could be from night at the opera

  19. Katie says:

Dang, I’ve never actually met anyone who knows who the Marx Bros. are, so this tickled me regardless of its implications.

Friggin’ sucks to gros up in the Dane Cook era when no one under 20 (or 30, really) has heard of real comedy.

  20. Cheesey says:

    Poor Zeppo–replaced by Irving Thalberg.

  21. manfred says:

Hey everyone obama is a socailist! You dont realize it cuz coleges are all socialist, and so they teech you not to notice!!1 thats why im not sending any of my kids to colege i dont want them to be socialist marxsists like obama and all of you. Palin fro prez in 2012!!!

  22. NomburWonUhmerikun says:

    socialism is evil!
if youre a true american, show it by rejecting socialism in all its forms:

    fire departments
    police
    libraries
    public schools
    public roads
    the post office
    parks
    public museums
    the military

these are all funded by taxes– wealth taken by the government and redistributed to various agencies and services– and therefore are based on evil, evil socialism. boycott all of these if you hate socialism.

  23. Russian says:

I am a communist and, first, I find it very funny. But, if you like to take it so seriously, not all communists follow Marx’s dogmas, there are many humanitarian, or Christian communists. I think, many theories and believes should be presented in a good educational system.

  24. Chardrak says:

Well I can’t speak for anyone else but my 4 years in college only showed me how many teachers were left wing extremists. 9/10 were bashing conservatives in classes that weren’t even dealing with political subjects. Only one, the history teacher, had more of a conservative slant. I wasn’t even slightly interested in the political side of things, but it was all so blatant it was annoying.

    • Why Not? says:

That is because Conservatism, in its extreme cases, is the antithesis of learning; the deliberate restricting of information so that existing doctrine appears more favorable. This is just like how Liberalism, in its extreme cases, becomes inclusive to a point that both individuality and the principles that make a nation great are forgotten. If you define Liberalism by including every option, no matter the cost, you can see how this mentality would be desirable in academia. I think there may be something wrong with those who would send their children to a school that would not teach a subject because it was “un-American.” Might as well start burning books while you’re at it.

Concerning your experiences, that’s just flat-out unprofessional. I’m sorry you had to experience that. Where did you go to college?

  25. RushnGreen says:

“These are my principles. If you don’t like them, I have others.” – Groucho Marx

  26. Yer Mom says:

That’s not Zeppo. That’s not even Gummo.

Also, colleges rarely “teach” Marxism. Marxism as a political ideal is incredibly outdated. They might teach *about* Marxism, which they should do; it’s an historically important school of political thought. They also teach about right-wing bigotry for the same reasons, although that school of thought is, alas, hardly historical, being all-too-alive today.

  27. Madame Defarge says:

    Not Zeppo. Irving Thalberg.

  28. Pippin says:

    Thats not Zeppo.

  29. vandalfan north idaho says:

    SWORDFISH!

  30. only me says:

because capitalism colleges made their wonder

  31. frasque says:

Just because a college is teaching ABOUT something, it’s not teaching you TO DO IT. Cripes, who let the conservative idiots loose here lately?

  32. George college prof says:

    Why a duck?

  33. ray10k says:

already 89 comments in, and no-one mentions paranoia? (rpg about a computer-ruled complex. one of the secret groups are the communists who “follow the teachings of the marx brothers and John Lennon”)

    • Vila Restal says:

Ah!! Paranoia. Yep!! The Secret Societies – The Sierra Club, The Communists, Death Leopards, the Illuminati et al. Ah those were the days Secret Messages to the GM a-go-go.

  34. Madiantin says:

    Awesome.

  35. fish eye no miko says:

If they tried to teach this to me, I’d leave in a huff. Or maybe a minute and a huff.

  36. Ichi says:

This is MY kind of Marxism!

  37. fawkes says:

Boy, some of you guys are really uptight.

  38. Ignatz says:

Well, for more overtly political humor, you have to go with Charlie Chaplin. Groucho himself said that he had no particular agendas in “Duck Soup”. I believe his exact quote was “We were just four Jews trying to get a laugh.” Check out “Modern Times” and “The Dictator” for social and political commentary.

  39. aikoe says:

How dare higher education involve actual education rather than lousy “comedy.” For shame.

  40. Julie says:

Not Zeppo in the middle; that’s Irving Thalberg, their producer. Just FYI

  41. Kay says:

Wow. You people are really worked up about this. The term Marxism has been jokingly applied to the Marx brothers as a play on words for a while now, long before this picture ever popped up on the internet. The poster was making a case for the Marx Brothers, not a case againt Karl Marx. It’s kind of awesome that their zany comedy is still making uptight people bicker amongst themselves years after their deaths though.

  42. hilarious, this is the best picture and caption combination that i have seen.

  43. david says:

btw, zeppo isn’t in this picture. the fourth is the late, great irving thalberg…

  44. Isengrim says:

Of course you can access Al-Jazeera in the US. But think about the things that are banned in the Islamic world!

Apologists never stop to think about that part.

  45. Morgan says:

Actually, that’s not Zeppo Marx, it’s Irving Thalberg… Yep, just like David ^ said, but i didn’t read that, so…

  46. marie says:

    Whomever captioned this….is a retard.
