  1. Quentinak says:

And how is competing to be a model objectifying women?

    • VeoV says:

I too would like to know this.

    • Andy says:

it’s objectifying them (as in making them into an object) because they’re being judged on something subjective rather than objective. Beauty can never be won; and these poor women have their who lives riding on how “beautiful” they are. It is sickening.

      • Lexxy says:

If you believe that then you don’t watch the show. Only about 25% of the judging is actually about the “beauty” of the women. A lot has to do with the passion they bring into the pictures with body language, emotion in their faces and their personality.

Also, a LOT of girls that go on the show are not “traditionally” beautiful. They are very unique looking and would have never had a chance in the modeling world if it had not been for Tyra.

      • Greymoya says:

Actually, modeling is a legitimate career in which a woman (or man for that matter) can make money by promoting products for companies. The objectifying comes from our culture, not the career itself.

        • Jamie Batugal says:

Modeling is a legitimate career but many of the models are objectified in photos. For example, Calvin Klein shows advertisements with a shirtless man wearing jeans and a women doting on him wearing nothing but underwear. This reveals the power dynamic that the woman is more vulnerable and inferior than a man. She is just a sexual object to the man in the picture and to the people viewing the picture. This definitely objectifies her.

      • thecapitalistprogram says:

agreed andy. don’t listen to these common idiots.

    • VeoV says:

Lexxy is completely right. I figure the person didn’t watch the show. I’m an avid fan. Tyra often tells them to stop posing sexy and she teaches them a LOT. They have to be good spokeswomen and be able to speak as well as use talents to catch the light correctly and sell the product that they’re advertising. Modeling isn’t easy. It takes more than having a pretty face to sit there and model. They have to work.

And exactly like Lexxy said.. some of those girls… not attractive to the average person by any means. Some of them even look alien like. She also likes to put some plus size models on the show too. This season is really exciting for me personally because it’s all about girls that are under the average height for models. I’m 5’3 and so I can relate!

All the girls on the show are pretty in some way shape or form.. so if it was just a show about who was prettiest and could sit there and have someone take a picture of them.. how would people get voted off? It’s a lot than that. It’s about being charismatic and having the right skills.

    • Mearna says:

      But girl they are FIIIIIERCE!!!

  2. Amie says:

    That’s not irony… just hypocrisy.

  3. Cyberwolfman says:

Not really irony, more like hypocrisy.

  4. Tyra Banks Millions says:

    That’s not irony… just hypocrisy.

It’s only objectifying when some evil man person is doing it…duh.

  5. Jynx says:

Also she encourages so called plus sized women to be on her show- one of them won a couple seasons ago. And they really try to go for art as much as marketing when they have their photoshoots.
    I’m just sayin.

    • faile says:

god I hate their “plus sized” definition. One of the “plus sized” girls was skinnier than I am, and I am a slim girl.
Frankly the super skinny “high fashion” type creep me out a bit. I realize some girls are born that way and can’t help it, but why does the industry strive for that. you’d be better off putting your clothes on a hanger for all the shape those skeletons have.

  6. katy says:

i don’t think she is against objectifying women…has she ever said that. She is/was a model anyway, just because she is successful doesn’t mean she is a feminist lol

  7. Andy says:

Yeah. and her version of “plus size” is anything over a size 4. I’m sorry, but real women are large enough that you can’t see their ribs…and they have their periods on a regular basis. I’m a lesbian woman, and I love when my women have hips, breasts and butt. The most beautiful woman in the world doesn’t need 5 pounds of makeup and a size 4.

  8. fred says:

Uh, I don’t ever recall Tyra fighting against objectifying women… she’s a former model hosting a modeling show. She has tangled with the tabloids over comments on her own weight, but I’m not aware that she’s started some campaign against beauty standards. I stamp this caption not funny. NEXT!

  9. Pinky says:

I’d say it’s hypocrisy more than irony. But good point nonetheless.

  10. Katie says:

Modeling isn’t objectifying women…..:/ I mean I suppose there are a few types of modeling that do (if you know what I mean) but that’s not really enforced on the show. As Tyra said, “Modeling is like making art with your body,” art does not equal objectification.

    • VeoV says:

      Exactly.

She has to tell some of the girls to stop being sluts and posing sexy.

If they want to model for playboy(which is objectifying women, I guess), then they can go work for them.

Modeling is an art and it takes a lot of skill. It’s also not just about getting pictures taken of yourself.. you have to be charismatic and be a good spokesperson as well.

      • paws4thot says:

Doing topless or nude modelling and getting right is every bit as much about producing an artistic pose and picture as any other form of modelling.

If you do a cliched “Playboy Pout”, or attempt to give yourself a gynacological exam in the photos, that’s when it crosses into pr0n!

“Being charismatic and a good spokesperson” is about being a product rep, not a model!

  11. Bix Nood says:

Tyra Banks has a huge forehead.

  12. VeoV says:

She gets slammed for being overweight.. and now she gets slammed for getting into shape?

She might as well just burn her body to ashes cause she can’t win.

Tyra still has her booty and she got into shape and kept a food diary to eat healthy because of a little competition at work for people to take care of themselves.

Nothing wrong with being healthy.. no matter what size you are.

  13. Sofi says:

What, I don’t get, is how Tyra is a model. She is pretty, but she looks possesed in 2/3 or her photos. Her laughs look so posed, her serious looks like she is about to poop, too posed. To be a model, everything needs to look natural like “oh is that a camera? I’m just sooo graceful!”
    She is very hypocritical too.
I love being so “hollywood fat”
    I love my new figure!
Overall, its really all of hollywood. First they tell you to be natural beauty, the next minute they tell you oh be skinny, oh wear make up an you won’t be so ugly!

  14. Poop says:

    who gives a crap

    • peepers says:

The fat feminist throwback that picks these captions, I guess. Every day we get a new “poor women!” non-LOL…

      • Amie says:

Oh, peepers, you’re so passionate :)

      • HanktheFrank says:

My sister just found out that her male counterpart (who has less experience, less education and has been at the job for a shorter period of time than she has) is making $49k a year while she’s been making $43k a year. Dude, women get pissed about this inequality stuff.

        • SirRendar says:

I’m playing devils advocate here but could there be something else that this male counterpart is offering to be worth the extra 7k a year?

All I’m saying is we’ve only heard one side of the story.

I don’t get why an employer would open him/herself up to the threat of a lawsuit over inequality when he can pay both genders the smaller amount, avoiding potential legal action and saving the company 7k a year in the process.

  15. the-pigeon-hunter says:

the high fashion modelling they are trying to promote is a lot about art, though.

i agree with sofi, though, that they are being hypocritical about the weight thing.

if you want to be a model you better put up with being objectified.

  16. I’ll believe that Tyra is against objectification when this picture stops telling me to that there is sex behind that block…

    • paws4thot says:

That’s fair; that picture is gratuitous objectification in a way that a nude picture of her, shot to show off the lines of her figure, just isn’t! (I don’t know that there is such a shot of her, but there are loads of such shot of other women.)

  17. Matthew says:

Looking up the word irony would be a good thing. In fact all the things people say are ironic and aren’t is starting to become a comedic irony statement about the status of Literature education in our public schools.

  18. shonuff says:

I despise her as well and see through her bulls**t.

  19. No1askedme says:

What the hell is going on with her hair?!

  20. Rammkatze says:

That’s because she’s not fighting against objectifying women. I watched her show once and had to change channel before I threw up. She had a guy there basically saying that women who say “I don’t have time to work out” are just plain lazy, and they can work out all the time. Of course.

  21. lilly1185 says:

    see also: debauchery

  22. Emsie says:

    Isnt that called Hypocrisy?

  23. person says:

I don’t understand how a lot of models are considered sexy at all. It’s kinda disturbing when guys are attracted to women who have the bodies of pre-pubescent boys. I mean, if they’re into flat chests, no ass, and all that…alright…your call…

  24. astroknot says:

    Actually

IRONIC is when you say something and mean something other than the literal intent of what is said.

  25. aikiwolfie says:

For get the English grammar lesson and the PC-bra-burning. I remember when these LOLs used to be funny!

  26. Caoimhe says:

    More like hypocrisy…

  27. itcelebrity says:

Wow, she is so beautiful !

  28. Kevin says:

Since when does Tyra fight against objectification of women? I’m sure she’s mentioned it, but I wouldn’t consider her an activist on the issue. She’s a professional model and an entertainer, and pretty much everything she does directly involves those two things.

I think modeling is about objectification. As a model, you are a tool being used to promote a product. A model is, in essence, an object. I don’t think models are intended to be any kind of guideline as to how women should look (or behave).

Being a gay man, feminism and feminist issues don’t particularly interest me, so what do I know? I generally make fun of people like Tyra with my girlfriends, rather than analyze her hypothetical interests in activism (not to mention that my friends are the kind of people who don’t really give a rat’s ass about models and the issues that surround them). Tyra’s hilariously over-the-top with being full of herself – who does she think she is, a drag queen?.

  29. Bada says:

Being a model is NOT being an object. People who think linke this shoud review their values.
Models are professionals just like nurses, engineers, cooks, singers, construction workers, etc. You obviously don’t know anything about models and other professions.

    • Jamie Batugal says:

Modeling is a professional career but when the photos that models are in focus on just her legs, turns her into an animal, shows her half naked with a man fully clothed, shows her as a sex object for a man’s pleasure, and shows her in a sexually suggestive pose all objectify her. The model is just seen as an object and not a strong, individual woman or man.

  30. Steph says:

    it isn’t irony, it’s hypocrisy.

  31. CF says:

I didn’t get past the part where Tyra was naked.

  32. Bayard says:

Just want to say your article is as astounding. The clearness in your post is just nice and i can assume you are an expert on this subject. Well with your permission let me to grab your feed to keep updated with forthcoming post. Thanks a million and please carry on the gratifying work.
