(1996) Two local men were seriously injured when their pickup truck left the road and struck a tree near Cotton Patch on state Highway 38 early Monday morning. Woodruff County Deputy Dovey Snyder reported the accident shortly after midnight Monday.
Thurston Poole, 33, of Des Arc, and Billy Ray Wallis, 38, of Little Rock, are listed in serious condition at Baptist Medical Center. The accident occurred as the two men were returning to Des Arc after a frog-giggin’ trip.
On an overcast Sunday night, Poole’s pickup truck’s headlights malfunctioned. The two men concluded that the headlight fuse on the older model truck had burned out. A replacement fuse was not available, but Wallis noticed that the .22 caliber bullet from his pistol fit perfectly into the fuse box next to the steering wheel column. Upon inserting the bullet, the headlights again began to operate properly and the two men proceeded on eastbound toward the White River Bridge.
After traveling approximately 20 miles, just before crossing the river, the bullet apparently overheated, discharged and struck Poole in the right testicle. The vehicle swerved sharply to the right, exiting the pavement and striking a tree. Poole suffered only minor cuts and abrasions from the accident but will require surgery to repair the other wound. Wallis sustained a broken clavicle and was treated and released.
“Thank God we weren’t on that bridge when Thurston (shot his intimate parts off) or we might have been dead,” stated Wallis. “I’ve been a trooper for 10 years in this part of the world, but this is a first for me. I can’t believe that those two would admit how the accident happened,” said Snyder.
Upon being notified of the wreck, Lavinia, Poole’s wife, asked how many frogs the boys had caught.

Uh, you people are idiots. You completely missed my point. I never said he WASN’T a spokesman (in fact, he was PRESIDENT, but you people are so empty-headed that you don’t know that); I just said that it’s sad that his many accomplishments are thrown aside just so the pathetic libs can paint him in their favorite villainous shade of black or white.
But wouldn’t you agree there are some things that are so bad, that however much good you might do, you can’t make up for the bad?
After all, this is a man who, just a few weeks after the Columbine massacre, went to a town nearby to say “Guns are good and **** anyone who disagrees”.
So while he might have loved puppies and played with kids, he was a bit of a twat when it came to respecting the rights of people who’s kids were just blown away by guns. Which, in some people’s eyes (including mine, I have to admit) is enough to damn him forever.
That is a fabrication from the error-filled Moore propaganda piece “Bowling for Columbine”. If you’re referring to the “dead hands” speech, that was delivered nearly a YEAR after Columbine. He also said this about the school shooting: “But the tragedy in Littleton last Tuesday calls upon us to take steps, along with dozens of other planned public events, to modify our schedule to show our profound sympathy and respect for the families and communities in the Denver area in their time of great loss.”
He had nothing to do with the massacre and did nothing to exasperate it. I don’t see how he lacked the respect of the rights of others, nor how he threatened it in any such way.

I have never, ever heard him called a racist. A gun nut yes, but never a racist. And in spite of his view on guns he has always been portrayed as a good guy even in the so-called librul media.

He was a spokesman for the NRA. And as with all issues, there are two sides because nobody wants things in moderation. Gun ownership by law abiding citizens is just fine as long as they are law abiding. Likewise, gun ownership by criminals is not ok because obviously they aren’t using the weapons for sport shooting or self defense. And when I say sport shooting, I mean things like IDPA matches which teach better and proper use of firearms and encourage excellent marksmanship. As someone who has had to defend myself in my own home, I certainly think we should be allowed to own and use firearms, as the tool they are intended to be. And it because of men like Mr. Heston who were willing to stand up and speak that I was legally able to defend myself instead of becoming just another statistic.
People don’t die from “GUNS”, you ignorant little twerp. They die from morons (like yourself) who lack responsibility and intelligence. I love it when people transfer responsibility to inanimate objects — it’s a sure sign of stupidity.
So if you let someone have a fork and they behave with the same “lack of responsibility”, the results would be just as dangerous?

The reason people say guns are dangerous is because they allow mass killings to be made easy. You pull the trigger of a submachine gun, twenty or so people can die in a minute. Yet if you give someone a fork, a knife or even a sword, it’s hard to get the same level of carnage.
On one level, you’re right – people kill people. But if the kids at Columbine, at the university, in the shopping centre – if they had no access to guns, then the death toll would probably have been a lot smaller.
And as for Brenda Ann Spencer – would she have been able to shoot school kids from her bedroom window with a knife? With a sword? No – she wouldn’t.
So don’t pretend like guns are all virtous and good. They make killing easy and simple, and that is bad, bad thing.

There are plenty of law-abiding people who own guns,who harm nobody. And because certains ones do hurt people let’s take them away from everybody. Let me give you a rounded statistic, since you seem to think firearms are most dangerous. Total death by guns (murder and accident) is about 40 thousand per year. There are 80 million gun owners in this country. Our doctors, through malpractice, kill 120 thousand people a year and there are only about 700 thousand doctors in this country. So while we are at it, let’s outlaw doctors too. And I will defend myself, not attack someone which is called responsible ownership and use.

Just out of curiousity, how do you tell the difference between a criminal and a sportsman when you are selling them the gun? Is there some kind of special “bad guy” detector that gun-shop owners have to prevent all the “naughty” people getting their hands on weapons?
Yeah, it’s called a background check. Something the NRA has vehemently opposed.
I think background checks are a necessity and should in fact be tougher than they are. It is one of the few things I do not agree with the NRA on. I also think a doctor who has been sued more than one time on malpractice should have his license revoked until he/she has received both counseling and gets more education so that he/she will cease doing the same harms and has retested on all the important information they learned the first time. But that’s just me.
Erm – surely a background check only shows people who have been bad guys in the past? So me – who has a spotless record – could buy a gun, then go and shoot twenty kids dead, and that would be perfectly fine?
My point (since apparently people missed it the first time) is that the argument that “Gun ownership by law abiding citizens is just fine as long as they are law abiding. Likewise, gun ownership by criminals is not ok” is entirely fallacious, because you can’t tell if someone is a criminal or not just by looking at them, or even by looking at their past.
So if you sell guns to people, you will sell them to people who intend to use them for harm. It is entirely unavoidable.
AIUI a “background check” in this context would be a check to see if you had ever committed a “felony” (US law).
Comprehensive background checks would include juducial remanding for psychological evaluation. Had this been done, the Virginia Tech shooter never would have been able to own a gun.

I have been under the impression that the debate between gun fanciers and gun ‘haters’ was the issue of public/private ownership of assault weapons — which are neither designed for hunting, sport shooting or home defense. We surely do not need AK-47s and all the other automatic assault weapons in every home. They were designed strictly for military use. The conflict seems to be lost in the hysteria.
Speaking of hysteria, unless you get a specific license and pay a tax, you cannot get ANY “automatic assault weapons” in the U.S. You can, however, get semi-automatic rifles and handguns.
Sorry, are you saying that having to pay more to get them actually makes it ok to own military grade arms?
To be fair, a lot of deer now have military grade armour, so all those people who go out hunting need better weapons to kill them.

I am pretty sure people get outraged when someone sets their wife on fire. And when someone gets doused with acid. And people who starve/neglect/beat their kids are not usually treated as heroes by the wider community. What exactly is your point? That people are crappy to one another?
But gasoline and acid have other purposes. The vast majority of people who buy guns do it for one purpose and one purpose only – so they can use it to hurt other people. And yes, even if they buy it for self-defence, that still (the majority of the time) involves hurting someone else in the process.
And people have caught on fire and lived through it as well.
Target shooting, hunting, collecting of historic weapons. That’s 3 legitimate purposes that don’t involve assault in the space pf about 1 minute.

For those who did not know, Charlton Heston marched alongside Dr. King in the 1960′s in support of civil rights.
And? Does being on a civil rights march give you a free pass for being @$$-hatted in other ways for the rest of your life?
It means mainly that the man followed his own principles, not yours. It is so ridiculous to either agree with every position a person takes or he or she is automatically the worst thing ever. Extremism is stupid no matter from the left or right.
Having said that, I once saw an interview Maria Shriver held with Heston. I had the impression she was planning to just trample him, as media personalities (on both sides of the political spectrum) like to do with guests who hold different views on some issues. What she apparently had not anticipated was that Heston was comfortable in front of a camera when she was still a child, and he was at least at comfortable and prepared for the interview as she was. He all but spanked her little backside right there on TV, and judging from the redness of her face, she knew it.
I’d have thought that walking with King when it was still very much not en vogue would more than offset his NRA years even with vehement gun haters.
Damn, the dude really put his career and his safety on the line for someone else’s rights, even though he saw no personal benefit from it. He did it because he thought it was a cause worth risking much for, and you cannot respect him for this, just because he happens to disagree with you about private gun ownership?
Whether you are for guns or against them, if you think Heston’s NRA years outweigh his Civil Rights years, I think you should rethink your priorities.

If you can’t see that that does not require me to support the ownership of military grade weapons other than as part of a law-enforcement body, standing army or legal “state” militia, then you are in fact an ass, whether you care to be so characterised or not!
And it certainly doesn’t make being a public figure speaking at a gun-ownership rally a few miles from the scene of a mass murder, a few weeks after that murder, anything less than ass-hatted! Your vitriol at me gives me cause to think you believe Heston’s NRA activities were more important than his civil rights activities. I disagree with you on this. It doesn’t make you an ass, but it does mean I think you should reconsider your priorities.
There was no gun ownership rally in the vicinity a few weeks after Columbine. There was an annual meeting, required by law of the NRA as a non-profit, in the vicinity (in Denver) on May 1, about a week and a half after Columbine, and the event was stripped down for obvious reasons.
I don’t know if hyperlinks are allowed here, but if you do a Google search for heston coumbine speech, you will find that Heston’s speech doesn’t flow quite the way Bowling for Columbine would have you believe.
Once again, I am not taking a position on gun ownership here. I am taking a position on Charlton Heston, who was a decent, moral person with the rare quality that he followed his conscience through territory both popular and unpopular. But most of all I am asserting again that the fight for civil rights was far more important than his later NRA activities.
If that makes me an ass in your eyes, I am OK with that.
