Well, I could name a few ‘newer’ movies that give me nightmares too.
‘Crossroads’, anyone? ‘Confessions of a Teenage Dramaqueen’? Those gave me nightmares, although perhaps not exactly for the reasons meant here.
Nightmares? Fail.

These days the horror movie industry has turned into “How much gore can we throw at you”…
The Exorcist always had the “Based on a true story” thing to boot.
Heh. Based on the rumor of a true story overheard in a bus stop then scribbled on a napkin in a diner at 3 a.m., stuffed in a coat pocket, dry cleaned, salvaged as lint, reassembled hastily then used as Kleenex, discarded and then we just made some crap up.
If any movie gives you nightmares you have serious issues..

The only vaguely suspenseful thing Kubrick ever did was some parts of 2001. Other parts were dull and still others were dumb. No other movie Kubrick had a hand in was worth crap.
I have to disagree. Full Metal Jacket and Clockwork Orange were brilliant movies. Not scary nor suspenseful, but still brilliant.

For me, it was The Exorcist…hands down. Apparently when I was so young I can’t remember, my older siblings were watching the movie while Grandma and parents were in other room. Had nightmares of the silhouette of a girl in a long nightgown against the hallway light standing in my bedroom doorway and was completely frightened. Had this nightmare for years until I realized it was all make-believe.
The only scary movie that has given me nightmares in years is Paranormal Activity…cuz I think I’m bein haunted by somethin similar to what’s in that movie.

And that movie is freakin scary…I kept havin nightmares of whatever that thing was draggin that girl down the hall and killing her boyfriend. >_<
