  1. Mearna says:

Well, I’m not sure about the time line of when and where, but gay was a term used to express something that is happy and light-hearted, in the 80s though I think gay was translated to “lame” though. Ex. “That’s so gay” = “That’s so lame”

    Apparently it means homosexuality now.

    • 142978 says:

You really think that “gay” has been used like “lame” for that long…?

      • MLD says:

If not the 80s, then the 90s, b/c I remember gay as a slur (like, ‘oh my god, you’re so gay’, meaning lame or stupid, as above) from HS, and that was 15 or so years ago.

        • 142978 says:

That usage coming into popularity in the mid- to late nineties makes a lot more sense to me than the 80′s. Ten years can make an awful lot of difference when it comes to slang. I stand by my comment.

  2. Keb says:

Actually, that’s not Twink. That’s Orin, the old sprite from the movie, Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer. I saw it when I was about 6 in the theater, and it was such a magical experience that in later years I almost doubted it ever happened. –Yep, I’m a child of the 80′s.

  3. Charlotte says:

This is true, these days the first thing mentioned would be that Rainbow has 8 female helpers and 2 male ones- and how that has to mean something.

Also thank you for using this picture, seeing it load up on my screen made me feel especially cheerful all of a sudden! (“Colours make people happy!”, I guess)

  4. crowfeathers says:

I thought it was totally gay. But then again, I was a little boy who used that word to describe anything I hated and my sisters liked. Transformers and G.I. Joes!!! Yay!!!

  5. HP says:

o gods i am so happy jsut seeing that pic i now have to find my doll ! yes im that sad i still have teh doll some where

  6. walking chrome toaster says:

  7. J.R. says:

Paving the way for the candy-ravers of the early 90′s…

  8. Spoodles says:

hah, I squeaked in just enough 80s time to have Rainbow Brite as my first birthday cake…..awww, nostalgia :)

  9. huh? says:

    damn… this made me nostalgia

  10. Dave says:

And the character can be a little chubby girl instead of the skinny ho they’re turning her into: http://www.rainbowbrite.com

  11. gloopy says:

LOL – I get it. Being gay is bad. Ha-ha. Stupid gays and their stupid gayness. I’d hate people to think I was gay. That would be… you know… kinda gay.

    • Megx says:

I think the implication is that childhood programming should have no references whatsoever to sexuality or political agendas. You know, except for that Nazi b***h Sailor Moon.

    • atmospheric prism says:

the point is that rainbows have nothing to do with gayness, you oversensitive twit

  12. Bodo says:

    Wait, Rainbow Brite was straight?

  13. MLD says:

    speak for yourself

  14. jacob1869 says:

it’s too bad she wasn’t gay that would’ve been hot

  15. tyberius says:

Umm, I haven’t seen this show, but as I understand it, it had a character named Twink? The joke is SO on you :P

  16. Beard says:

Pff, she was so gay. I would be gay if my best buddy was Moonglow. Plus they have characters called Tickled Pink and Twink. Plus rainbows. Gay, gay rainbows…

But i only realise this in hindsight. Except for the moonglow thing… hot, hot moonglow. It was ok to fancy her when i was young, i was young too. Once.

  17. KelseyDenise says:

Rainbow Brite is not gay, nor is Twink or any of the other Sprites.

Starlite, the most wonderful horse in the universe…. totally gay.
