  1. Borat says:

Aw come on, I love British humour!

    Not.

    • paws4thot says:

Given that Sasha Baron Cohen is even more annoying and obnoxious than Ricky Gervais (who at least has Extras on the plus side)…

      • Scott says:

Ah yes. The two examples making it a pattern of course?

        • Bhazor says:

Theres also the infuriating Bo Selecta, the terrible and endlessly repeated two Pints of Lager, Balls of Steel (or candid camera for students), the increasingly toe curling Little Britain and so many many more.

At least most bad American comedies are only derivative, poorly characterised and tame rather than trying to make up for bad writing with controversy.

Also Extras was a terrible lovies fest compared to the sublime Office. To me it really shows Ricky’s slow climb into his own arsehole.

          • Alex says:

Nothing the Brits have produced, comedy-wise, has come even close to the obnoxious as Jeff Foxworthy and the brand of redneck humor he spawned (including Larry the Cable Guy and Billl Engvall)

          • Rosie says:

Just so you know, there are a lot of Brits who think this sort of “humour” is pointless wankery and would choose QI, Have I Got News For You or just plain oodles of Michael McIntyre over that nonsense any day.

            • paws4thot says:

I did nominate Extras an exception; I might have agreed with you if you hadn’t claimed Quite (un)Interesting to be funny!

          • sinfonie says:

Yeah, and Tom Green is a genius.

  2. Your employee says:

I suppose this is in response to some antics at the Grammys? In that case, you need people to have watched the Grammys to get it…

  3. DarkHawke says:

No, there IS no excuse for obnoxious humor. And considering this is wanker that pretty much gave us the “cringe-idy” AND the American version of “The Office,” he should be shot at sunrise. No blindfold. No cigarette. And for DAMN sure, no last words!

    • np says:

      U R A moron.

      • Aprique says:

Humour is a very subjective thing. No one is a moron for thinking something’s not funny. I think Ricky Gervais is histerical, but I can’t stand Sacha Baron Cohen, Steve Corelle, or Will Farrel. I think their humour is just uncomfortable. But I understand how other people think they’re funny…

    • paws4thot says:

From the Wikipedia entry of The Office (US) “The Office was adapted for American audiences by executive producer Greg Daniels”, which suggests that Gervais and Marchant are only partly at fault for your version (but ours was unwatchably c@rp anyway).

  4. prote says:

    it’s spelled “humour”

  5. OneCGuy says:

If you don’t like Ricky Gervais and the office (British or American) you should have your funny bone looked at by an orthopaedist, because chances are, you broke it.

    • Unfair says:

I’ve tried watching the British version of the The Office. It’s worse than watching paint dry or the grass grow. It’s utterly stupid. Not a drop of funny in it.
Now, Black Adder or Mr. Bean, that’s funny.

      • OneCGuy says:

Seeing as black adder and Mr. Bean are completely different shows, this makes sense. Both comedies, not many other similarities.
It is like saying “I liked double dare, but deal or no deal is boring” Yes they are both game shows but they are completely different.

      • Thefires says:

I couldn’t agree more. Also Ricky Gervais is perceived as an obnoxious moron over here in the UK too. Rowan Atkinson, on the other hand, is a national treasure in my opinion.

        • sinfonie says:

God. Rowan Atkinson’s humor is completely “Python wannabe” without the funny parts. Didn’t Jerry Lewis do it better?? And HE’s retarded.

      • toodle_poots says:

Not even when Tim and Dawn are baiting Garath? That’s usually good for some funnyness.

  6. Anne Onymous says:

I’m British, and I don’t find him or Cohen funny. Not because I find them offensive (I don’t), I just don’t find them funny.

The Office – both British and US versions – are among the least funny shows I’ve ever had the displeasure of watching.

  7. this is so true, my mum’s british.

  8. Sqwirk says:

    I wish I was British.

    • Star_Gazer says:

Ditto. All my fave actors and bands are British. Plus they have this awesome accent…..

      • Wait! says:

Ya? Well, don’t EVEN THINK about trying to fake the accent.

      • Rosie says:

Er, the UK has multiple accents originating in various corners of its 94,000 sq miles of land. Many of them sound completely different to one another.

Saying “this awesome accent” as flattering as it is, is like suggesting someone from Kentucky has the same accent as someone from Washington.

        • paws4thot says:

If you want to see something funny, watch a Sarf Larndarner trying to talk to a Loon wha’s nae been awa fae Peterheid!

        • Erin says:

Yet, when many Brits try to imitate an American accent, they almost always pick the Southern, or “country,” accent. I don’t mean this as anything against the Brits, but people from the UK saying, “Don’t fake the accent,” should reconsider their own attempts at faking an American accent. Like I said, nothing against the UK. It’s an awesome country!

  9. Montgomery Q. Python says:

Even we Brits don’t all find him funny. I can’t stand him.

  10. Flick says:

I find him mildy amusing but was never a fan of either “Offices” I much prefer Stephen, Fry, Hugh Laurie, Rowan Atkinson stuff (Blackadder/Jeeves & Wooster) and Red Dwarf – that is so funny.

I can’t stand Little Britain though – what a pile of poo!

    • Blondievelle says:

I liked Little Britain at first because it was different, it very quickly got old.

I firmly believe that most humour does not travel well, so you’re always going to get people from other countries not liking the comedy styling’s of your own. But this little turd just isn’t funny. Lord knows why anyone thinks so!

Cohen, although not funny, has a point to his “humour”. So I can respect his intellect, if not his wit.

    • Sfot says:

Don’t forget Monty Python- they were utter geniuses!

  11. Gezza says:

We disowned him LONNNNG AGO. People both sides of the pond find him obnoxious

  12. GazUtd says:

Thank Jeebus other people are finally agreeing with me that Gervais is about as funny as being hit on the head with a dead cat. His interview with that other twat Larry David made me want to punch things repeatedly, preferably both their ugly faces. Being an ignorant moron does not equal funny. Unless its George Bush.

  13. jasonx says:

    1. Couldn’t get through one whole episode of the British “Office”.

    2. The American version of “The Office”, and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” since it was also mentioned, are two of the funniest shows ever made.

    3. Ricky Gervais is British so of course his humor (spelled without the silly extra “U” here) is going to be dry and obnoxious.

    • Nom de Plume says:

‘Humour’ was there BEFORE ‘humor’, you know…

    • yermaw says:

      The silly little U?
I think you’ll find that U was there first. Learn to spell the proper way, not your lazy American way.
Stop pretending America is the best. It’s not.
      I don’t find him funny, but you’re a twat.

  14. Ender says:

People have different tastes in comedy. We should all learn to be accepting of different opinions.

  15. Just a Brit says:

Gervais is a complete waste of space and a totally unmitigated w*nker, the man isn’t funny, at all, remotely, ever….
    He’a a pr1ck

Well that’s my opinion for what it’s worth <3

  16. Amanda says:

Oh i get it! It’s because all brittish people are obnoxious and not really humorous.

  17. Travis says:

The invention of lying was probably one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Also, I have never seen the british version of the office, but I know that the american version is one of the sorriest excuses for comedy I have ever seen.

  18. gs says:

Yes, being British, that and being a genius.

  19. Balck Dragonfly says:

    OH c’mon!
What about Rowan Atkinson? Benny Hill? and Sacha Baron Cohen?
What about the genius that was ADAM DOUGLAS?
    Brittish humour FTW!!

  20. Nic says:

I take it he just made fun of your favourite awards ceremony.

That’s gotta hurt. Take it to your psychotherapist, at least they get paid to listen to you whining.

  21. Rosie says:

Find an episode of QI or Have I Got News For You. Neither are sitcoms, though, so it may be a little highbrow for you.

  22. Bri C. says:

the tops of british humor is Eddie Izzard, hands down. look him up if you’ve never heard of him

  23. Sydney says:

I love Ricky Gervais. That is all.

  24. Ash says:

Funny thing is, us British say the same thing about being American.

  25. JinPachi says:

Unless any of you made a guest apperiance on GTA IV or any other videogame, STFU

  26. SWIFT says:

In response to the main feature; I’m British and I CAN NOT STAND GERVAIS.

In our Golden Age of comedy, it had wit, charm, subtlety, clever use of the English language and a little sauce on the side if you wanted it. Now it’s just aggressive, rude, ostentatious and extremely embarrassing. The only good sitcoms in recent years have been ‘Not Going Out’ and ‘After You’ve Gone’ (thanks for canceling them, BBC…) and Channel 4′s ‘The I.T. Crowd’. At least we have our panel shows (‘Have I Got News For You’, Mock the Week’, ‘QI’, etc) and two good sketch shows (‘The Armstrong and Miller Show’, ‘That Mitchell and Webb Look’) to keep us entertained, but even they don’t compare to the good ol’ days.

R.I.P. British Comedy…We Hardly Knew Ye

    (My two-cents)

  27. I'llbethesoldierinwhite says:

I’m British and I effing love Gervais (and Karl).

    Yes, he is a knob.

Yes, I’m not sure I could deal with him personally.

Yes, he makes me laugh my ARSE off.

P.S. I’m not entirely sure what the USA did to the Office but after watching a couple of episodes, I was suffering from severe bowel discomfort. I don’t know if the two were related. I think they were.

    • jasonx says:

“I’m not entirely sure what the USA did to the Office but after watching a couple of episodes, I was suffering from severe bowel discomfort.”

And Britain’s unpalatable food had nothing to do with that? C’mon now.

  28. cuttlefish says:

Why has The Inbetweeners not been mentioned in this conversation? I don’t know anyone who doesn’t find that side-splittingly funny. That along with the IT crowd and all the fantastic panel shows… British comedy is in a very good place at the moment. Its healthy to laugh.. To hold back that laughter because you are too pretentious to just let yourself go is a bad idea. I’m British.. I like some American shows, but I find them quite ‘simple’ to be honest. It’s the same formula over and over. Gervais is alright. Not my kind of thing, however Michael Mcintyre is hilarious

  29. Alexa says:

Some people find offensive comedy funny. I think Ricky Gervais is hilarious, personally, but I don’t think people are idiots for not liking him, everyone has a different sense of humour. Even though the caption was making fun of him, I found that funny. I think liking/not liking offensive or controversial comedy sometimes depends on whether or not you can laugh at yourself. A lot of people make fun of the Scots, and even though I’m Scottish, I don’t really care, and some of it is quite funny. I think that’s why some people can laugh at jokes about other groups of people without feeling bad about it.

  30. MM says:

    bring back Monty Python!

  31. Some British humor is always fun. But too much can be annoying. O.o

  32. Tobias says:

    Yett I’m Norwegian! =)

  33. Kendra says:

Then what do you call dane cook, Shara silverman and the tim and eric awesome show…at least Ricky Gervais has a career

  34. jake says:

i find this offensive im british -_- and ps if all british humors obnoxious, why is mr bean funny?

  35. Blinky says:

As a Brit I also can’t stand the guy-A LOT of Brits feel the same.
British humour is properly reflected by our stand ups like Billy Connelly, Eddie Izzard, Lee Evans and so on.

  36. mary says:

I’m a brit and I think he’s awful, not funny at all.. in fact, world, I’m really sorry. Truely, I’m really very sorry. our bad.

  37. Dancerpaw says:

He’s sure as hell funnier than this caption.

  38. Carlos says:

Well, i think only British people think that of him! And we all know why: they are jelous because he “traded” UK for USA! LOL

The same exact think happened to Hugh Laurie!

(They are both excellent actors, by the way!)

    • Sfot says:

I think you “traded” your ability to use grammar and in at some point.

That and some of us just generally dislike him. Look around, I’m sure you’ll find a person from the island called Britain who likes him.

  39. Dreaming Pixel says:

Eh, there are exceptions to both rules, but by and large I prefer british comedy (and I come from neither of the countries).

  40. Fleepmoop says:

Now, Bill Bailey, THERE’S a truly funny english comedian. And he’s from the southwest, like me.

I hate it when people say ‘British’. The UK is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. All completely different.

  41. ShauniePrawnie says:

For Ricky Gervais it’s not about being obnoxious or British, he’s just a c*nt.

  42. jasonx says:

That’s all you got? Really? You’re supposed to at least make a “They eat McDonald’s!” remark, or “They don’t know where other countries are on a map, chap!”, or “They call it soccer!”. I have to say I’m pretty disappointed with your lack of effort there.
