Thus the quotes around “ugly.” I think the whole purpose of the show is that Ugly Betty isn’t ugly by any possible analysis, which would make sense since Ms. Ferrara, uh, wowsers.
But…but…but…she has thick glasses, and braces and frumpy clothes! That totally means she’s ugly! Doesn’t it?
Having been considered ugly for most of my life, this saddens me.
But this was not a show for young women…was it??

Which reminds me of an old Jewish joke told to me by an old Jew (I used to live quite close to one of the Largest Jewish Areas of London.) Man phones up and Jewish tailoring company to ask about an order and says “Could I speak to Mr Finkelstein please.” and the company gofer answers the phone and says “Sorry Mr Finkelstein isn’t available. This is Yom Kippur”. The Man then says “Well Mr Kippur could you tell me when Mr Finkelstein is available”

Indeed! I know a show where “the ugly” actually had dentures to make her look like a horse, a haircut shaped like a helmet, and the mandatory thick glasses.
And yet, for her wedding, the only thing she did was lose the glasses: she still had teeth like a horse and a very helmet shaped hair. THAT was new to me, hehehe. Kudos!
I hate Hollywood. I thought this stereotype was erradicated during those “After School Specials” in the 70′s… way to turn the clocks back!
What have we learned… nothing, if it’s cancelled I’m glad.

If you could watch the Colombian soap-opera from which this TV show was taken from, then I think you’d like it. Betty la Fea was a whole lot better.
I have to agree that the show was no longer funny. The first few seasons were great – then they whole thing with the family fighting and the son who came back as a daughter, etc was just stupid.

Glad it’s cancelled, calling people ugly because of braces and glass is is an insult to people with glasses, braces and horrifying facial scars that are actually ugly.

The fat chick from the Facts of Life was maybe a roll model to ugly girls. This show was just stupid.
By the end of that series everyone on the show was a “person of size.”
Not only has she braces and glasses but she is latino and not skinny. That’s so ugly.

The problem is that it is unclear whether that was actually sarcasm or whether he actually didn’t know. There’s nothing there to indicate that it is sarcasm, only your judgement on this. To most other people this sounds like a statement.
I dunno… it kinda kills the fun with sarcasm when one has to make it painfully obvious one is being sarcastic.
Well you don’t have to make it obvious, just don’t phrase it like you are making a statement.
I see no way to take that statement except as pure sarcasm. Some people have issues picking up even the easiest to detect sarcasm it seems.
I loved “Yo soy Betty la fea” – I watched it when I was in Japan (where they play bazillions of international programs)!

Don’t worry there are still plenty of other shows out there to demonize ugliness, put down overweight people and enforce the stereotype that all gays are shrieking queers.
