Tell us your thoughts about the M.I.A/New York Times beef by voting in the poll! And in case you are unfamiliar with the story, a brief rundown of the drama can be found beneath the poll.

Last week, a Lynn Hirschberg-penned profile on pop provocateur M.I.A. was published by The New York Times. The profile featured some not-so-flattering depictions of the singer, whose militant, third-world-embracing persona was called into question. M.I.A. was predictably outraged and took to the internet to vent her frustrations: She posted Hirschberg’s phone number on her Twitter account and published audio snippets which, she felt, contradicted elements of the story. So much delicious drama!

    FIRSTYTTYETY!

And I don’t know, and don’t care, who or what an MIA is.

    • Steph says:

Since MIA is an acronym for Missing In Action, I’d love it if she *were* MIA… whoever she is. Maybe her name is Mia and she thought M.I.A. would be cooler. Whatever. These singers weird me out.

      • SSuzak says:

milf in action would be better

      • I Stole Your Hat says:

She’s the woman who sang Paper planes. Because her father was a member of the tamil tigers (A bunch of terrorists fight for tamil freedom in sri lanka), M.I.A. Might actually stand for that.
She’s a british rapper who uses tamil in song of her songs. Most memorably a jump rope rhyme that my mom sang when she was a little school girl.
For the record, Tamil is a South Indian language, and the origin of several other South Indian languages, such as Telegu and Malialum. Thus, you can talk to someone in one of these languages, and they will understand you if you speak another one.

    *YAWN*

      *YAAAAAAWN*

Also, who the f*ck is M.I.A? (apart from the babydaddy)

      • moe says:

I’m generalizing here, but I find it amusing that people are more likely to describe a new toothpaste flavor as “rad”, but yawn in the presence of something or someone truly radical and edgy.

        • peepers says:

“rad”?!? Yeah, maybe 20 years ago…

        • dumb shark says:

          radical,i dunno,but she sure ain’t edgy,she’s more rounded up.
(wait are we talking about some singer here?l…)

        • beautifuldisaster says:

What the hell does this have to do with the picture posted, the poll or anything else on this thread? She’s radical and edgy? Is that what you’re getting at? For someone “radical and edgy” it seems no one knows who the hell she is. :p

          • moe says:

Actually, some people here do know. She was on Time Magazine’s list of 100 most influential people in the world last year. And she’s radical and edgy, yes, because she’s very political. If you don’t know something, that doesn’t make it untrue.

  3. Daria says:

I thought ROFLRazzi dealt with celebrities. If we have to ask who a ‘celebrity’ is, that person is NOT a celebrity.

  4. Trinity says:

    <3 M.I.A.!!!!

    • moe says:

I’m not familiar enough with her work to be a fan, and I’m not usually a fan of videos that are full of sex, nudity and violence, but I think Born Free is a powerful video.

      • I Stole Your Hat says:

I like her other songs. Like the remix of Jimmy, which is… sampled? Related? Based off? a hindi song.

  5. mbjdi says:

Who the hell is MIA? The initials seem appropriate somehow.

  6. qwik says:

    my comment?

    IDGAC! (I DON’T GIVE A CR*P!)

  7. The Pharaoh says:

Some of you people ought to leave the mall once in a while.

  8. Jag says:

    Mmm…truffle-flavored French fries. (^.^)

What? M.I.A? Never heard of him. =_,=

  9. Aaron A. says:

It’s not necessarily anything wrong with the news; they wouldn’t write this celebrity gossip crap if we didn’t read it.

  10. The Anvil says:

    I think i just pulled a muscle trying to give a sh*t.

  11. TAW says:

Publishing a person’s contact details without their consent, including on the internet, is always wrong. I don’t think she should have put his phone number on her Twitter, if that is indeed what she did. It’s horrible that she’s being slandered in a newspaper and she has the right to feel victimised. Having a rant online is hardly mature, but it’s understandable.

  12. Alice says:

Stop assuming everyone is american, I don’t give a shit about your newspapers (assuming that’s what this is about…)

  13. peepers says:

You think Kurt Cobain and Courney Love should have raised a child??

  14. artschoolnerd says:

M.I.A shouldn’t have posted the journalists number, that was wrong. But how do you people not know of M.I.A? Even for just Paper Planes?

    • peepers says:

      “you people”? Racist…

    • Daria says:

I’m sorry I’m not as cosmo as you, I live where it doesn’t come in over the shortwave. Like the Midwest.

      • artschoolnerd says:

I’d say I’m sorry and didn’t mean to actually insult anybody, but your comment about this site being only for celebrities above suggests you don’t really care anyway.

        • beautifuldisaster says:

The site is supposed to be about celebrities…It’s called roflRAZZI. As in PAPARAZZI? It’s not even something that is supposed to be taken seriously. For the love of god it’s a bunch of pictures captioned to make people laugh and you get all these people that want to go to war with each other over them. It’s hysterical.

  15. gglazer says:

    +1 on the *YAWN*

  16. haiz says:

ok, so my comment is “what?”

  17. Grace says:

I love MIA, but haven’t heard a thing about this article…

  18. Hirschberg juiced the article, but only a little bit. But it was enough to really make me call in to question her ethics as a journalist. MIA is certainly an odd enough character, with a pretty severe dichotomy between her rage about the fate of her people and her opulent lifestyle, and she acknowledges that. But Hirschberg seemed out to knock her down, and she deserved what she’s gotten in return.

  19. bong says:

its a bit of a hatchet job, lots of snide digs in there.
its nice to see mia enjoying life and success.

  20. bong says:

and the tamil people have suffered greatly due to disgusting racism and nationalist ideology its only right someone speak up for them, i don’t see a dichotomy at all, is ones voice only valid if you aren’t an artist, where or how you live is irrelevant, if the message is valid then its right to say it. Maya has every right to say it.

  21. Faith Mariah Mattson says:

Shes pregnant geez i didnt know that

  22. Paddah says:

Off topic cuz its more fun here, but does anyone else think this is Miley in… lets say… 3 years?

  23. Ryan says:

Who cares! Get a life everyone!

  24. Will says:

Is this her at a concert? Nobody wants to see you 7 months pregnate on stage in a skimpy outfit singing. :(

  25. calafulu says:

Who the hell is this american MIA. The German grouppe MIA is more known that this shit
