All y’all CGI chipmunks can suck it

(Gizmo from Gremlins)

The old school animation chipmunks aren’t so bad, though.

  1. Long before dawn says:

Why? R they doing a remake?

    • X says:

No, the geekverse just has a bug up their craw about CGI effects for some reason. Their idea of movie wonderment is a guy in the rubber Godzilla suit.

It’s mainly the old fart types.

      • Madara says:

Being a defender of the classic Godzilla and being horribly dissapointed by the miserable American Crap version of it I have to say at least gremlins was a timeless classic of Horror and Comedy
        =P

Take Avatar for example. Good Story, Good Effects Buuuuuuut Miserable miserable 1 Dimensional characters who just have no development what so ever.

        • peepers says:

And let’s toss in Star Wars 4-6 vs Star Wars 1-3 while we’re at it.

        • AngelMax says:

The Gremlins was my favorite movie when I was little, and I was born in ’87. Watching it now I realize that it is indeed a freaky movie and scary enough that I can’t believe I was addicted to it at the age of 3 or 4.

But I’ve maintained the opinion that the animatronics in the movie have stood the test of time better than any other. Even by today’s standards, they look awesome.

      • artschoolnerd says:

Naw, it’s BAD CGI that the geekverse gets upset about. Look at Jurassic Park, see how well those dinosaurs blended in, how difficult it was to tell when it was animatronics and when it was CGI? Thats CGI done well.

But a lot of people also find charm in using puppets and animatronics, usually feels more alive.

      • Nev says:

You hit the nail right on the head. There´s nothing wrong with CGI other than peoples´ general misconception about it.

There is no magic button on a computer that creates the artwork and animates it for you.

It is an artform in itself and as such, can vary in terms of quality and execution. It is also pretty safe to say that it takes just as much skill and passion on the digital artist´s part as any puppeteer or actor… It takes years of intense practice and study to create believable CGI effects just like any other artform.

If you don’t believe me, just pick up a trial copy of Photoshop, Maya, or Zbrush and see if you can create something believable. I’m sure you’ll all find out very quickly it’s a lot harder and more time consuming than it looks.

        • Paws4thot says:

Bad CGI – any time you can see the pixelation, like the Gungan battle scenes in SW1.
Good CGI – any time you can’t see that it’s an F/X shot, even if you know intellectually that it must be, like the “camera” 300 feet above the top of the launch gantry in Apollo 13.

      • metallicfire says:

Actually, I’m the one that submitted this, and I’m 20. And I actually like cgi, but there’s a time and a place. And those chipmunk movies just freak me out on several levels.

  2. Teatime of death says:

The correct term would be ‘All ya CGI chipmunks can suck it’

  3. Gustav says:

But the CGI chipmunks don’t require that you kill cats and steal their fur, nowadays the movie companies have to kill cats without any reason at all.

  4. Willow says:

OMG that movie, Gremlins, was scary. I saw it when I was 8.

  5. buksi says:

Gizmo in a red toy convertible. The best movie scenes of all time.

  6. :D says:

    suck what?

  7. Shipoopi says:

annoying movie puppet criticizes annoying cgi characters, whee!
