ROFLash: Natalie Portman Gets Oscar Buzz, Is Still Hot

TALENT

NATALIE PORTMAN

The news out of the Venice Film Festival (who knew they had one?) is that Natalie Portman is generating Oscar buzz for her new ballerina thriller “Black Swan.” Yes, a ballerina movie can be a thriller. If ballerinas aren’t your thing maybe this will whet your appetite – Portman and Mila Kunis share a steamy love scene. Check please, waiter!

Portman, you’re a goddess. You can make out with girls and still generate Oscar buzz! Plus, you can rap (remember her SNL digital short?)! Keep up the good work!

  1. NBClaymore says:

Moron! Venice is one of the oldest and most prestigious awards.

  2. AshKill says:

Still doesn’t explain why she did Star Wars I, II, and III.

    • Tony says:

Good actors and actresses do ‘silly’ fare quite a bit.

It’s good fun, and it pays well.

    • Dan says:

      HUGE

      PAYCHECK

    • TomWS says:

Those (Star Wars prequels) are the only movies I’ve seen her in and (hopefully) will ever see her in. She had about as much acting talent there as JarJar.

      • Durendal says:

        You fail at criticism.

As much as I love Star Wars, most of the (admitted) bad qualities of the prequels can be attributed to Lucas’ autocratic direction and obsessive control coupled with a lack of vision and just plain greed and sillyness.

Natalie Portman is a very good actress. Ever seen her as a kid in Léon: The Professional? Her very first movie, and she made a killing.

Plus, she studied psychology at Harvard, so…

        Problem?

        • Chris says:

If she’s up for an Oscar I demand to know how she was so tediously awful in the Star Wars movies. No excuses, bad script isn’t any excuse. Even Chistensen was better with his GCSE drama style “sad” “happy “angry” “confused” acting. Am I to believe she was deliberately terrible to mock the films?

          • Tony says:

            How about direction.

Lucas directed them, he wrote the characters as archetypes.
He directed Hayden to be the “conflicted hero”

he directed Natalie to be the “generic love interest”
Both did their parts as directed.

        • sbyrstall says:

Psychology isn’t a tough subject. Anyone who doesn’t know what they want to do usually goes this route.

      • TJ says:

Yeah, it’s definitely stupid to write off a talented actress because she did a bad movie (ok, three bad movies). Anyway, it wasn’t her making those movies suck. And she has done some really great work since. One of my personal favorite performances by her is in V for Vendetta. Which is a movie you should see.

        • TomWS says:

I’ve not seen V, but I’ll give her a shot and add it to my Netflix queue. Deal?

        • ClariPossum says:

Seconding the “V for Vendetta” recommendation. AWESOME movie, and she’s an awesome actress, and did an amazing job playing Evie. Not too bad at the brit accent, either, though I could still tell it was fake. She did much better as Anne Boleyn, though. :)

Sometimes actors are limited by the character they’re playing, too.

      • viking gal says:

I didn’t see those, but I’ve seen the first three, plus other George Lucas movies. Lucas doesn’t know how to write for or direct females. Hard to really act, when your character is written as a cartoon outline.

        • Dan says:

Hell, look at Leia. Tough female…until her man is around, then she’s a swooner. Even when he writes a strong female character, he still fails at it.

As classic as the original trilogy is, I’ll risk blasphemy by daring to say it was the cast and crew that carried Lucas, because his writing and directing are terrible.

          • The Crapture says:

            THIS.

Harrison Ford notoriously told Lucas that his dialogue was terrible during one of the original trilogy shoots. His remarks were something along the lines of “Yeah, you can write this s**t, but you can’t actually say it”

  3. Kevin Klawitter says:

Yeah, if you don’t know that Venice has a film festival, you have no place talking about movies.

  4. Jenny says:

Woot! I love ballet! This’ll be great!

On an offhand note, there’s a great Italian horror/thriller movie called Opera (released as Terror at the Opera in the US) which goes to show even mild manner opera divas and ballerinas can have horrible time. And don’t forget Phantom of the Opera. :P

  5. Elle says:

The trailer for Black Swan looks AMAZING. I can’t wait for this movie to come out.

  6. skinnehpuppeh says:

JFC. She was good in ONE (1) movie. “Leon, the Professional”. She showed the acting talent of a 2×4 in the Star Wars movies. I wanted to stuff that Guy Fawkes mask down her terrible, fake British accent in “V For Vendetta”.

    • Kevin Klawitter says:

Just because you own a DVD player doesn’t make you an expert on accents. Let me guess, you though Leo DiCaprio’s accent was terrible in “Blood Diamond”, too.

      • ClariPossum says:

Well, I have to agree that her accent in V for Vendetta wasn’t the greatest, but it was a lot better than some other fakes I’ve heard. I mentioned this before, but if you ever see “The Other Boleyn Girl” (total chick flick, but a decent movie), her accent is MUCH improved in that one.

      • ClariPossum says:

Wanted to add, too, that her acting really makes up for what she lacks in the accent department. ;)

    • TJ says:

Sorry, you’re officially a moron. She was great in V for Vendetta.

    • Jessi says:

      Yeah!

Beautiful Girls, Everyone Says I Love You, Mars Attacks!, Anywhere But Here, Where the Heart Is, Cold Mountain and Garden State all really sucked, didn’t they?

      Oh wait, no they didn’t.

  7. ronniecat says:

You didn’t know about the Venice Film Festival? Srsly?

  8. Rando says FREE PUNDIT KITCHEN!!! says:

Wait, I think we’ve overlooked something important here. Natalie & Mila Kunis in a love scene. I think that’s an automatic Best Picture Oscar there.

  9. Jim says:

She is Jewish, what a surprise that in a Jewish dominated industry someone with the acting talent of dung can get an award!! of course, consider the other garbage out of Hollywood……heck give her the dang Oscar.

    • TJ says:

Wow, Jim, poor taste and racism all in one post. You’re pretty awesome at failing.

      • fernblatt says:

Anti-Semitic is the proper term, like our ole’ bud Mel Gibson.

All that aside, I do agree with him in that much of what comes out of Hollywood these days is indeed garbage. Not all, luckily. Like the subject of this post, most certainly not garbage.

        • ben says:

That’s not anti-semitic anyhow as it’s saying the industry is biased towards Jewish people which is negative towards everyone but them, it’s just complaining. Just like how saying you only got that job because you’re a guy or something, wouldn’t be sexist towards men.

          • Dan says:

Except you’re wrong on both counts, because in both cases it’s being suggested that the group in question is showing preference toward their own kind simply because of who they are. It’s a slight aimed at that particular group, suggesting a trend towards favoritism based on race, religion, or gender. Saying that Hollywood is run by Jews and therefore favors Jews is anti-Semitic, just as suggesting that a guy only got a job because a guy chose to promote him would be sexist.

Of course, that’s not to say that Jewish execs never show favoritism towards fellow Jews, or that guys never get promoted over women simply due to being male, but to generalize it must have happened, or that it always happens, is pretty much the definition of those -isms.

    • ben says:

It’s not generating oscar buzz because she’s Jewish, it’s because she’s a lesbian in it. Anything about something “controversial” wins an oscar, that or the Holocaust/Jews in WWII, or those with characters that are disabled and inspirational. Also, how can you judge a movie you haven’t seen, fernblatt?

  10. Ari Gold says:

yes she is hot..i’d hit that

  11. Dan says:

“I’ve only seen her in [bad or sub-par movie] but I’m going to judge her entire career based on this one example and ignore everything else that she’s been in!”

Almost every actor has their bad movie. Some actors have more than one. Some do nothing but bad movies.

Portman just happens to have the Star Wars prequels, as opposed to movies like The Professional, Heat, Garden State, Closer, etc. And to be fair, she played Amidala exactly as she was directed to. She can’t help that the character was nothing more than a plot device to set up whiny emo Jedi becoming Vader.

  12. kad says:

    Girl can act.

  13. rammkatze says:

Good grief! Since when is she talented?! She was particularly bad in “Paris, je t’aime”.

She nevertheless not that bad that I can’t watch a good movie in which she sadly is in. She still doesn’t make me avoid movies like Scarlett Johannson does.

  14. LabelMe says:

Keep in mind that when Portman did episode 1 she was like 16 and still in high school. She’s a young actress so it’s understandable she wouldn’t act her best in some roles when she was still a teenager. But as has already been covered above she has done good acting in movies both before and after she did star wars. She has fantastic potential as an actress and as the years go by we’ll no doubt continue to see her acting just get better and better.

  15. sofa king says:

lets just agree to disagree… but agree she sucks

  16. HvsL says:

So, I don’t regularly watch SNL and had never seen the rapping skit. .. That was freaking hilarious and I think I love her!
Also, seconding the comments about Star Wars not being her fault. . . she probably signed on em not realizing what all they were going to do to her (and the franchise) because it’s such a huge opportunity.
But V was awesome and I’ve seen her in a few other things that were really enjoyable. Give her a chance.

  17. Chazwozza says:

She’s not that hot. I think she is too plain.
