Metallica has sucked quite a lot over the past 15 years, and them suing fans really doesn’t help, but before the Black Album, they were more than awesome, and James Hetfield has more than earned the right to rock however the hell he wants.
I don’t see how people can forget that Metallica does suck. And has sucked ever since the monstrosity that was “St. Anger.” God, I almost want to vomit just from typing that title…
Load and Reload were mediocre at best, downright bad at worst, and St. Anger was a steaming pile of sh*t, but Death Magnetic, I believe, is at the very least the beginning of a return to their thrash roots, and while maybe not as good as their first 4 albums, it does NOT suck.
My biggest problem with Death Magnetic is that while I’m listening to the songs I’m thinking, I wish this song had ended about 2 minutes ago. Very long and repetitive to me. I don’t know, maybe I’m just “over” Metallica.
Same here. I started to get a bad feeling when I saw there was a song called ‘The Unforgiven III’. ‘The Unforgiven’ was great, but it should never have had sequels. And I wouldn’t say that I’m “over” Metallica. I still love their old songs, but anthing past ‘…And Justice For All’ just doesn’t feel like it’s the same band. I think the reason their old songs don’t seem overly long is because the songs went from slow steady verses one minute, to thrash-sounding choruses the next. Now it all just sounds the same through the whole song, making it seem too long.
Now that they dumped Bob Rock as producer and went with slayer’s Rick Ruben they have gotten some of their edge back. Though I do question the tempo to a few songs on DM it’s overall a huge step in the right direction. I love the songs “broke, beaten & scared”, “cyanide”, “the day that never comes”, “the unforgiven 3″ and “all nightmare long”. Sort of partial to “my apocalypse” and “the judas kiss” as well but not as much as the others.
Metallica had been doing rock wrong since Load…way before the hated St. Anger album
But I could see a ukulele solo on the lead single to the next album
Yeah, I brought reload and st anger just in case, not bothering any more.
They changed their music too much for my tastes, and considering I will listen to everything from Motorhead to Aphex Twin to The Dandy Warhols, thats saying a lot.
Rip Metallica, your first 4 albums were the best, but all good things must come to an end, or they zombify and require a shotgun to fix.
I agree. Their last good album was “…And Justice for All.” I think a lot of it could be because Cliff Burton was a huge part of their success for their first 3 albums, and after he died (R.I.P.) they kind of started to fall apart in their creativity.
That and they are sellouts. They cater more to the media and popularity, not so much their music anymore. It’s really sad… I watched a recent concert of theirs that they did with Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax, and they played the WORST of the 4. I almost walked out from disappointment.
Metallica is one of the most overrated bands- EVER. I am tired of being told “You call yourself a metal head, but don’t listen to metallica?” That’s right. I think majority of the people that say they like Metallica only do so because “everyone else” likes Metallica, and are afraid to form their own opinion. Hence, why they are so overrated.
That is my rant for the day.
actually metallica’s black album is what got me into metal back in 97… I guess you could say I “graduated” to black metal and death metal around 2001 but I still like metallica to this day. Granted not as much as I used to but that doesnt mean Im going to denounce them or anything
Ozzy is a pathetic old caricature of his former self, reduced to a mumbling, babbling incompetent.
As for the rest of the apologist tripe, you can stick it up your bung along with the crap they called music after their egos destroyed their credibility.
I think ‘Some Kind Of Monster’ tells us all we need to know what these once-Gods Of Thunder became: Pathetic, emowhining losers who are dead inside.
Ozzy should have retired back when he said he was going to after touring on the No More Tears album.. lying prick was all “This is my last show – yippee!” He looked old and crazy then.
Yeah, I still got love for what he did in the early days of metal, but still. Get off the damn stage and use OzzFest to promote new bands and let other acts be the main attraction while you and the BS crew sit back and enjoy your retirement.
Hardly. It’s got great songs, but the mixing is absolutely terrible.
I’m a big Metallica fan, I practically grew up with them, and Het is the reason I started playing guitar. My favourite album is Master of Puppets. But, I think Load and Reload are still very good albums. Different, for sure, but very good in their own right.
I guess it’s hard for metalheads to except that there is also other music out there that can be good. Being open to all kinds of styles is what makes a good musician, imo. Stick with one genre, and you’ll always sound the same, like 90% of all Metal bands out there.
well said. no band lasts forever, and they are all bound to change. just like Fuel and Drowning Pool, if they lose one member they change completely. i hate Fuel’s new album, but it made me like their old stuff even more. and just because a band changes, doesnt mean you have to like it. i mean music is all about taste, and everyone has a different taste in music.
I’ll put it like this: Metallica never sold out. Whatever they did was what they wanted to do. Its just that a lot of what they wanted to was s**t. I laugh at those who say “Metallica grew up”. Bulls**t. Metallica weren’t a bunch of kids like Hellhammer or Poison (not that Poison, the german one) who tried to be the most extreme band in the world. In the early days their music was quite progressive, it was intricate riff on top of intricate riff on top of intricate riff. Compare any of Hammets early solos to something like Hero Of The Day. I’d take the first Down album, Deliverance by COC over the Load albums any day. And if you like St.Anger, you’ll cream over the first Helmet album Strap It On because it’s the same minimal low-pitched songwriting schtick, but done CREATIVELY instead of just plopping three boring major chords together and assuming it will kick ass if Lars thrashes hard enough.
I wonder how many people commenting legitimately dislike Metallica and how many of them are just saying they dislike Metallica because it’s “cool” to dislike Metallica.
If only people were allowed to like or dislike music without the Internet telling them who they’re supposed to like or dislike.
I disliked Metallica on my own, most of the people in the little town I live in are poser metal heads. I like all kinds of music and there are a few Metallica songs I like. I’ve kind of grown into other types of music, so my mix could include Metallica, Louis Armstrong, and yes The Black Keys. If anyone’s following the crowd in the dislike of Metallica it’s not me.
I really wish they’d quit.
I listen old Metallica, Kill ‘em All being my favorite and I like it.
But I don’t want to see them live.
Few years ago in Sonisphere we left when they started playing and I didn’t feel like I missed anything.
The same night SAXON was awesome and even though they’re getting old, they still rock, unlike some sellouts.
Keep telling yourself that. Maybe you’ll be able to forget what utter douches they turned into if you say it often enough and what that says about your taste in music.
here’s where we diverge chuck, because metallica is horrid now, they had three great albums and a few so-so albums, now they’re a horrible excuse for a “metal” band
Metallica has always been nothing less than awesome. Excellent albums, every single one of them. It’s such a shame they retired 20 years ago. Who knows how much more awesome music they could have made?
Lemmy Kilmister would kick Metallica’s ass single-handed while blind, drunk and crippled from the neck down. He’s one old metalhead who hasn’t turned into a complete self-parody, unlike Ozzy…
You can never talk about Metallica online without idiots like those above me bashing them. If you hate them, you know what? You don’t actually lave to listen to them.
no, but we do have to be constantly reminded of how they used to be great and now suck when people (who may have never even heard true thrash metal) jabber on and on about how great hetfield et al is
so in order to explain why a band sucks now, i should look up a song by a band i don’t care about?
why would i do that? i’m not that much of a masochist
Ummm.. Can’t we all just get over the fact that Lars did what he did, and just appreicate the music? Don’t get so political over it. They are rock legends and have done so much for the world of Rock/Metal. So shut the F**k up and listen to the music.
While is is an amusing picture, I agree.
Hetfield has earned the right to rock however the F*** he wants.
Surely you jest, this clown sues teenagers for thousands of dollars just because they copied a few tracks and therefore s**** donkey b****.
Your thinking of Lars Ulrich…
fail troll is fail
Lars is the douchebag of the band.
Don’t like Metallica much, but they’ve done oh so much for rock music, and Hetfield is kinda awesome.
Metallica has sucked quite a lot over the past 15 years, and them suing fans really doesn’t help, but before the Black Album, they were more than awesome, and James Hetfield has more than earned the right to rock however the hell he wants.
^^ This
You tell ‘em.
I don’t see how people can forget that Metallica does suck. And has sucked ever since the monstrosity that was “St. Anger.” God, I almost want to vomit just from typing that title…
Yes, Metallica does suck.
The ukulele might help because it sure can’t hurt
Load and Reload were mediocre at best, downright bad at worst, and St. Anger was a steaming pile of sh*t, but Death Magnetic, I believe, is at the very least the beginning of a return to their thrash roots, and while maybe not as good as their first 4 albums, it does NOT suck.

you’re doing yourself a disservice…Death Magnetic is back to form…
The middle part is correct. Metallica went downhil from the Black album. No one takes them seriously anymore.
I agree. Their last good album was “…And Justice for All.” I think a lot of it could be because Cliff Burton was a huge part of their success for their first 3 albums, and after he died (R.I.P.) they kind of started to fall apart in their creativity.

Glad to finally see someone in these comments recognize the crapfest that was the black album (and, naturally, the fecal hurricane that followed).
I was gonna say something… but it’s already been said. James Hetfield can rock however the f**k he wants… we still won’t take him any more seriously.
It’s actually Bob Rock’s fault. he produced everything from black forward, and he played bass on St Anger.
Moomin = ROCK!
YES
james hetfield can suck any way he wants. and that’s in every way imaginable.
Metallica is one of the most overrated bands- EVER. I am tired of being told “You call yourself a metal head, but don’t listen to metallica?” That’s right. I’m sure Het really cares what you think.
In fact I think I can hear him crying into his $50 bills…
20 years ago he could rock. Now he’s just a sad old man that needs to retire while he has -some- dignity still left.
Sure, he’s “old” and probably got more money than your entire family can make in 4 generations
So? Being rich doesn’t stop him from being a sad old man. All the money in the world can’t change that.
20 years ago it was 1990, a year before The black album was released. Their best material was from before that time.
1990 was also the year Judas Priest released Painkiller!!! One of my favorite metal albums ever! \m/
Exactly my point. That was before the decline really began. Ah well. At least Lemmy never pussied out like Moneywhorica did.
Yeah; anyone who thinks Moneywh0rica are a heavy metal band should go and buy” No Sleep til Hammersmith” by Motorhead, right!!
Ozzy is a pathetic old caricature of his former self, reduced to a mumbling, babbling incompetent.

The Black Album was Metallica’s climactic peak. They “went out with a bang” as it were. It’s all downhill from there.
Well, Hetfield’s vocal chords “went out with a bang” there anyway…
sellouts don’t rock
..And Justice For All is a perfect album. That’s all that I want to say.

Hetfield is a *gigantic* doosh
Dave Mustaine for President!
i was wondering how long it would take to mention mustaine. megadeth rules.
I wonder how many people commenting legitimately dislike Metallica and how many of them are just saying they dislike Metallica because it’s “cool” to dislike Metallica.
If only people were allowed to like or dislike music without the Internet telling them who they’re supposed to like or dislike.
I like Metallica. I also like Creed and Nickelback. I am fully aware that I am not one of the cool kids, and I’m comfortable with that.
i’d dislike metallica even if i was the only one that did
I disliked Metallica on my own, most of the people in the little town I live in are poser metal heads. I like all kinds of music and there are a few Metallica songs I like. I’ve kind of grown into other types of music, so my mix could include Metallica, Louis Armstrong, and yes The Black Keys. If anyone’s following the crowd in the dislike of Metallica it’s not me.
Damn, I thought it was Jesse James, I am so metal rock challenged!
I really wish they’d quit.
I listen old Metallica, Kill ‘em All being my favorite and I like it.

James, you don’t deserve to hold that.
Meh, a bunch of g*y emo teens trashing metallica on the internets…
Keep telling yourself that. Maybe you’ll be able to forget what utter douches they turned into if you say it often enough and what that says about your taste in music.
meh, bunch of pretend metal fans backing a fake metal band on the internet
once you grow up some you’ll find some real metal
James Hetfield hasn’t rocked since at least And Justice For All. Some have argued that he hasn’t rocked since Master of Puppets.
James will rock your ass six ways from Sunday. He’s just that badass.
Also: Metallica never had an album titled The Black Album.
And the Beatles never released anything called “The White Album”, but self-titled albums are just too confusing, so that’s what it’s called.
If a self-titled album confuses you, you have issues.
here’s where we diverge chuck, because metallica is horrid now, they had three great albums and a few so-so albums, now they’re a horrible excuse for a “metal” band
Except for the part where they’re awesome.
You might be on to something. How about this:
Metallica has always been nothing less than awesome. Excellent albums, every single one of them. It’s such a shame they retired 20 years ago. Who knows how much more awesome music they could have made?
Lemmy Kilmister would kick Metallica’s ass single-handed while blind, drunk and crippled from the neck down. He’s one old metalhead who hasn’t turned into a complete self-parody, unlike Ozzy…
Metallica peaked in like 1990. He’s been doing it wrong for a very long time.
