I don’t claim to know much about Morrissey other than he was in The Smiths and is referenced in a Nerf Herder song. But when he said, “Did you see the thing on the news about their treatment of animals and animal welfare? Absolutely horrific. You can’t help but feel that the Chinese are a subspecies,” I would like to think that what he really meant was that Chinese people who torture animals behave like a subspecies.
Then again, I don’t know the guy, so maybe he’s just a racist.

Well, Moroney has provoked me all right, into assuming that he is a racist doucebag, because no-one else would say soemthing that gratuitously offensive in order to make people think about the issues they wanted to highlight.
It doesn’t matter what his motivation was. Saying a group of people are a subspecies is racist. It’s archetypally, essentially, and irrefutably racist. It is the most blatantly racist thing that anyone could choose to say.
That you could seriously argue that he is not racist is both laughable and sad. It’s people like you – who ignore racism, and prevent it from being dealt with by insisting it doesn’t exist – who are the reason why racism is still such a problem.

Oh please! I don’t ignore racism, I just know Morrissey and how he argues, that’s all. Just because of one statement you can’t say you know how a person is/thinks. If you would know him you would actually know he is far from being a racist.
Don’t be so overeager to judge people to be a racist or ignoring racism when you know nothing about them!
But you can say that that one statement is racist. Which it is.
Hm, I thought subspecies is a taxonomic term that doesn’t say anything about being more or less developed. Not that Morrissey didn’t mean it like that :/
I’m not racist and matter of fact I’m agaist of racism and discrimination of any kind but Morrisey is right in this case.
I have chinesse friend Sijia Lee who wasn’t mad at me when I was ranting how Chinese are monsters. I even told her why just don’t you eat eat each other? There is too many Chinese at the moment. I was soooo angry but she understood my anger because I love animals, I own a cat and I’m vegeterian.

When you see this, makes you angry and you would say most crazy stuuff because every person who loves animals will get emocional at seeing what Chineese do to animals. It’s genocide.

If I head French or Australians are eating dogs, Mrrisey would say say thing, I would say same thing. Because it’s a crime and not realated with their nacionality. It’s most barbaric, unhuman and sick.
I’ll grant that I have NO idea what comment Morrissey (who I pay no attention to, have only heard of in passing and wouldn’t recognize a picture of without a caption) made or the context it was made in. So you’ll have to take what I say with a grain of salt, I guess.
I get that treating animals horribly is a terrible thing. I understand the reasons a lot of people give for being vegetarians. However, for those who aren’t, why take issue with eating a cat or dog?
I don’t take issue with eating meat of any kind. With keeping animals for the sole purpose of dining on them at some point. I DO have a problem with them being kept in awful conditions or killed in a particularly painful or tortuous way. However, I love me some burgers and chicken. It would be hypocritical to turn around and say that everyone who has ever eaten a cat or dog or snake or rabbit is a terrible, animal abusing person. Which is exactly what a lot of people DO say. The day after they’ve eaten a fancy steak dinner.
Meat is meat. I’m not saying I like the idea – I have cats, I love them dearly. But, hey, maybe they’re effing delicious? Maybe at some point there were just *so many* they had to be ‘culled’ and why waste the meat when people are hungry? I don’t know why someone would look at a cat and think “Dinner.” But I don’t know why the first person to eat a burger or steak looked at a cow and though “Food,” either.

Anyone getting mad over this and going ‘omg hes a racist’ is an idiot. It’s quite clear that in the context of the situation he is making comment on, that is referring to the Chinese people doing these horrific acts. -OBVIOUSLY- not every Chinese person in the world does this. Therefore it seems perfectly normal and understandable that in the context of talking about a certain situation, he would not feel the need to specify ‘only the Chinese doing this’. It should be understood. It’s implied.
C’mon people, use your brains.
I’d just like to point out that in a biological sense, ‘races’ and ‘subspecies’ are really more or less the same thing, as applied to humans vs. other animals.
In the case of any other mammal, a geographically distinct, stable population *within a species* that exhibits physical characteristics specific to that population and breeds true is considered a subspecies.
But because humans are so sensitive about the whole thing, scientists reserve such labeling for colonies of nearly identical coral shrimp instead of people.
That’s what I thought too that subspecies means, not some ‘lesser race’.
However, all modern humans already belong to the subspecies Homo sapiens sapiens, and there is no further official classification or indisputable scientific basis for one. Subspecies is the lowest official taxonomic term and not the same as race for humans or any other organism.
Yeah, Morrissey’s racist – and not just for this comment; he seems to have made a few racist comments over the years.
Plus – he sucks. I mean, cheer up for chrissakes!!
