Lady Gaga Video Premiere: The Edge of Boring

We never thought we’d see the day when Lady Gaga got, dare we say, boring, but it seems that day may have arrived. The video clip for her latest single, “The Edge of Glory,” features the singer strutting and dancing on a New York City fire escape for five and a half minutes. And that’s it. No mass murder, no cigarette sunglasses, no firework bra, no aliens, no pseudo-blasphemy. Just… fire escape. What are your thoughts?

….but then if it WAS just like her other vids you’d say she just does the same stuff all the time. Well get back to ORIGINAL funny Photos, because I happen to love this video. If you wanna make fun of something boring and un-original, then how about all the videos of “shawtys dancin in the clubs” that come a dime a dozen nowadays? Get back to your captions :P

    • lmu says:

      ^Could not agree more.

    • n00b_u_h8 says:

Totally agree. I thought the setting (very dark and grim) is a sort of back drop for the song-’edge of somewhere better’ kind of feel. Also, the lack of coordinated dancing fits into the love song lyrics-no one choreographs their own professions of love, do they? Also, the eye trick thing brings back fond memories of Bad Romance, and almost indicates a sequel. But maybe I’m just a giant fan of Mother Monster ;b

      • wowyousuck says:

This IS a Lady Gaga mindf**k. Deal with it!

I really liked the video. Also, I think this song may make it to the next Olympics… I’m just sayin’.

    • dragonmom says:

Not a fan but I like this song. Still don’t like her videos but that’s personal. Whatever I don’t like about her is redeemed by the fact that she is talented and this song shows off her fantastic singing voice.

    • lolwut says:

What about the several videos that take place in fire escapes and city sidewalks? Chris Brown, Chemical Brothers, and Michael Jackson have done videos that took place at least partly in a similar setting. Not as overdone, but the idea has still been done before. (And much better, at that)

    • hunterclm says:

      AGREED

  2. Kallisti says:

You told me lies, OP. She still wore an ugly outfit and she dry-humped a fire escape. I am disappoint.

  3. MermaidGirl says:

yeah this isn’t her most interesting video but it seems that you people will pick on her no matter what she does just because she dares to be different. So just step off, leave her alone and let her do her thing.

  4. Lady Proserpina says:

After her last couple songs, Gaga had pretty much lost me as a fan. But this one is good and not too out-there. I really like it because it’s not so crazy. Also, is it just me or do those bricks look really fake in some shots?

  5. Chris says:

Pressed haters always lurk around. Honestly, as others have mentioned, you’d pick on her in any choice she makes. “She’s too over the top! Total attention seeker” – “OH! This is too simple! Boring! What happened to her being over the top?!”.
Like, seriously, think about what you say, before you say it.
Regardless, this video is beautiful visually, and if you’re someone who appreciates art and imagery and details, you’ll appreciate this. The video goes along nicely with the song.
The song is about looking back on your life, appreciating what you have done, and thinking “I have won.”, and not be scared of death. Here, Gaga is in her old town, where she was trying to make it big, her very beginning. She’s with Clarence, someone who she listened to when she was young, and someone who is inspired by NY. Gaga is looking back on her old life, appreciating it, and thinking “I have won.”.
“Never be afraid to dream.”, she posted on twitter before the release. I think that sums it up. New Gaga in her old environment.

  6. CarS says:

It’s nice to see she can do normal, and she still has some pretty outrageous outfits.

    • Trinity says:

She makes herself look so ugly in them, especially with the eye makeup =\ She was her prettiest in Poker Face and Eh Eh

      • Dane says:

I agree with Eh Eh, But I think she still looks great! Especially in the Judas video. Where she’s wearing the red bikini, yeah.

  7. Jayceon says:

Good, maybe now that she’s boring she will fade away and try and take Beiber with her.

  8. MissaA says:

OMG I love how she looks in this SO MUCH! Especially the eyeliner! Gorgeous!

  9. must not comment says:

Something feels, I don’t know, off? The music definitely has that top-of-the-world feel, but the visuals are missing a climactic moment. She stays in the fire exit and the sidewalk. I kept expecting her to run all the way to the rooftop, or straight into the middle of the street.

    Reinforcing the “edge” concept, perhaps?

  10. lalalala says:

fireworks bras are like, so mainstream.

  11. shin0bi272 says:

    oh just die already

  12. KennyVee says:

This kind of sounds like something Pat Benatar would have done in the ’80s. Not calling it a copy, just saying it reminds me of her in some ways. I’m not a Gaga fan, but this isn’t a bad tune.

    • Subliminality says:

I was thinking the same thing. Moreover, a lot of the dance moves she did were very much like the old ones we used to see back in vids in the 80′s.

I think it was an interesting theme. The song kinda had the same feel in, my opinion. Something from the 80′s. I don’t think there was anything wrong with it for that, though. Clever combination. :D

  13. byowllight says:

Hmmm. Smacks a little of RENT to me. Mimi’s fire escape dancing for Take Me Out Tonight with a dash of Roger’s One Song Glory.

    • chris says:

exactly what i was thinking! I love that song and it gets BUTCHERED so so often. i think the video and song were well done. very throwback to many different genres. ‘original’ doesn’t necessarily mean ‘crazy outlandish whackjob’ it can also be gentle references to where you came from and where you are going.

  14. Vj says:

I must say that she sounds a bit off. it’s not in the video, or anything like that, I actually liked the video. but she has that new sound and I can’t help but wonder who is writing those new songs. she sings differently, and has different music to back it up.
not saying that it’s bad, I kinnda like it (although I liked old stuff better, but this is catchy too) it’s just way too different from the last album to be the same songwriter…

and about her being boring… meh. she did that with her hair (which I really like), and those clothes, and dry-humping the stairs… nope, she’s not boring. she’s just a tad less crazy :D

    • Megi says:

She writes every single song herself. Granted, she usually has someone else as a co-writer, but who that is varies each and every song. Considering that the only consistency between songs is her, and that almost all of the album has much more of an 80′s feel to it, I think it was her own creative style that took her in that direction.

  15. Brooke says:

Very Cher-esque. My son’s comment when they showed the video was, “looks like she’s on the edge of the steps, to me.” LOL

  16. Charles says:

    Gene Kelly did it better.

  17. M&M says:

I personally LOVE her songs but this music video was just so…what’s the word…HORRIBLE. I thought she was going to do something a bit better. The only thing that was her was the outfit. BORING!

  18. Anonymouse says:

I was just amazed that she only had ONE outfit for this video. Just one! That’s never happened before.

I was happy though that this had more of asweet feel like The Fame to it. The Fame Monster and Born This Way were significantly creepier.

  19. YEllowrose says:

I love this video she has gone so far out before this to bring it back to simple is actully a smart idea. Its classic video in the since it makes you foucs on the song not the story line of the video.

  20. Alex says:

Great references – Bladerunner stood out for me. Not a particularly great story though, much prefer her others!

  21. miranda says:

Just admit it you’ll criticize her everytime you get a chance. You complain she does a lot of weird things to “seek attention” and when she releases a new video doing nothing out of the ordinary you call her boring? What a hypocrite.

  22. teradragon says:

If you want boring, listen / watch beyonce’s new one… something about girls ruling the m-f-ing world. It truely is poo.

  23. teradragon says:

    allow me to link you

    • AC says:

Aww, Beyonce, WTF is this? Why autotune/digitally skew/whatever such a beautiful voice? This is way more disappointing than Lady Gaga dialing down the flashiness a bit.

  24. Alisha says:

!!!!4 min into video she licks the floor!!!!!!yuck……it looks like this video was low budget. it should have been a video centered around traveling to wonderful looking scenes like cliffs overlooking a ocean or a waterfall in some tropical climate and traveling with some hot sexy guy. I do like the toned down costume, when she normal (by her standards) people say tone it down, then when she tones it down people want flashy over the top. You cant win them all.

  25. Razor says:

I used to be a huge fan of Gaga, but this song it the most boring thing I’ve ever heard. And I naively hoped the clip would save it…

    • :p says:

It IS on a cheap budget…the director quit and this was filmed in one day. I do agree with your last point though, people are always looking to criticise GaGa on something :)

I like the simplicity of it, but true, she doesn’t have to lick the floor.

  26. Elle says:

New York is her home. It’s just her in the place that makes her the most comfortable. It’s nice.

  27. Sally says:

    Her lip synch is TERRIBLE!

  28. Suzanne says:

*sigh* And all the Little Monsters lose their s**t because someone dared to say something remotely negative about their beloved Mother Monster. It’s boring and it’s a cheesy, BAD ripoff of a 1980′s song. The video is pathetic and badly done. There’s simplistic and then there’s boring. This is the latter. Yes, Clarence is awesome but he’s the only redeeming thing in this farce.

  29. jeffnjakesmom says:

just maybe she just decided to cut back the budget this time (no background dancers – one outfit – not too over the top set) i must say Judas would have cost a fortune to make (not that she dosnt have the bucks!!)…… not a little monster but dont mind her stuff …. im a listen to anything kinda gal – and yes beyonce missed the mark this time …..

  30. amanda says:

The song was written about her grandfather who passed away recently. I didn’t expect anything short of amazing. It’s still Gaga. It’s still great.

  31. chaos says:

I’m not much for the song… it’s not bad just not my style of music.
However, the video itself is kind of cool. Reminds me of Blade Runner (someone else mentioned that I think) and some of the early nineties dystopic science fiction.

  32. Stuffyface says:

I like Gaga. I like the song. I like the reference she was making and the history behind it all. But I still can’t help thinking she came across as the stereotypical Pretty Woman with this video. You know, “I’m a prostitute, but I’m on the edge of making it big.”

  33. kaktuskaktus says:

meh.. she sounds like Pink now…

  34. Shiny says:

The song’s boring. Doesn’t matter about the video, can’t forgive a boring song.

  35. meow says:

is that where they film sesame street?

  36. kate says:

Rest in peace “Big Man” ;(

  37. RAAWRR says:

I’d say ‘simple’ not boring. Simplicity is what a song like this one called for in a clip and that is what she gave it. I’d say it’s a good one.
Also, am I the only one that sees similarities in some of the shots of this clip and it’s setting to the scene in which Mimi sings ‘Out Tonight’ in the film adaption of RENT?

  38. Miss Meow Meow says:

If this song is so personal to her, if it’s her being sensitive, I wish she could have abandoned the facade. She should have actually been herself. THAT would have been a mindf*** and would have made me appreciate the song and video. As it stands, this is just the alter ego she created gyrating on a fire escape. There’s nothing personal about it. I can’t stand her “be yourself” message when she can’t stand to look remotely like herself. But hey, I was just a poor kid that grew up believing it’s what’s on the inside that really matters.

    • Kallisti says:

You just completely and perfectly summed up my feelings about Lady Gaga. When I saw how she used to look I was so impressed, and she’s an amazingly talented piano player and her singing was actually sincere (not my style, but it was good). Now she’s a caricature of symbolism…

  39. LowChoBro says:

the songs called on the ege of glory, i can think of alot of better video ideas and the song and the video dont seem to match

  40. allybb says:

    YOU WENT TOO FAR,ROFLRAZZI!!!!
(i,personally agree the video IS boring.)
this song is about when her Grandfather DIED!
A LITTLE RESPECT FOR GAGA AND THE DEAD PLZ!

  41. kayla says:

well, i donno its not exactally boring, her outfits a tad conterversial but with it being lady gaga nothings really contraversial. :/
her video for eheh (nothing eles i can say) was boing, just her and and a bunch of italians in bright clothing all chill.
it might be the fact that shes so in deubt that she didnt go all out fot this video.
with the beat of the song i pictured the video more full of life and movment..ohh well what can you do.

  42. Jen says:

That’s what you all get for expecting the usual.

  43. Ita says:

I think I prefer the Blades of Glory.

  44. fuzzyshark says:

love the song but the video should have had more dancing and less self touching

  45. Erin says:

Gaga’s videos are even more hilarious and pretentious when you watch them with the sound off.

  46. aidanchase says:

this song is beautiful. and i love gaga but this kinda boring for her. then again… she had to make something acceptable to show on tv before midnght. just sayin.
